Several storms were examined during the period of the ESRO-4 mission to study the altitudinal behaviour of atomic oxygen and molecular nitrogen at low latitudes. A special method of data reduction was applied to distinguish composition changes due to thermal expansion and those which resulted from some non-thermal process. It was shown that in the majority of cases studied there exists some latitudinal interval where changes of the N2/O ratio from quiet to storm days are small compared with that observed in the purely thermal case. This latitudinal interval was found to be displaced to the winter hemisphere (not always across the equator) during solstice cases and the corresponding altitudinal interval was sometimes equal to the whole height range covered by the satellite. The effective temperature of atomic oxygen turned out to be greater than that deduced from the altitudinal distribution of N2. This implies that there exists a non-thermal component of the [O] increase on a storm day at low latitudes and thus [O] is distributed in a non-barometric way. A possible mechanism responsible for this behaviour is downwelling due to the disturbed global thermospheric circulation.  相似文献

Like geographical analysis in general, medical geography is based on the assumption that location is the first clue to causal analysis. Against a background of two empirical studies, one dealing with a group of ALS cases and the other with a group of leukaemia cases, this paper argues that it is insufficient to define disease occurrence in spatial terms, referring to patients' places of residence at the time of onset. Since exposure and effect are related to both time and place, geographical studies of ill health in modern society are complicated by high mobility, long periods of latency and environmental change which might cause a distortion between cause and effect. Therefore a different approach is required.  相似文献

This paper uses national, regional and sub-regional time series and cross-sectional data to show that the direct statistical relationship between agricultural and industrial growth is weaker than would be expected. To explain the gap between theoretical expectations and empirical results, the roles of lagged responses, the terms of trade effect, wage-price movements, initial agricultural productivity, income distribution and some non-agricultural factors as determinants of industrial growth are assessed. Adequate agricultural growth is important for price stabilization policy and has direct welfare implications for poorer segments of the population. Further, an appropriate policy towards non-agricultural determinants of industrial growth is needed in order to maximize the impact of agricultural growth on industrial development.  相似文献

The supply of statistics continues to expand sharply as new research turns up great quantities of valuable material. A need may be demonstrated for a device to make possible the storage of related statistical matters in a spatially ordered set of patterns on maps. A sequence of these maps would then be readily available for reference purpose.

Four aims suggest themselves in such an exercise. First, there should be good unit area comparability or a method to show the varying base size of most statistical reporting units. Second, a multi‐component, multi‐dimensional representation of the data is essential. Third, a comparison of input and output data patterns should be possible. Fourth, there must be general retrievability of the statistical sources.

A large amount of annual census data in Scotland has provided the main raw material for the development of the number patterns. In this instance the relationship of grain crops to the regularly croppable area is used as the subject. Any relateable populations may be prepared and stored in the same way. The result is a valuable store of reference material which reveals the major patterns over a sequence of years. No decoding is necessary and the approach lends itself to machine scribing on maps.  相似文献

Itinerant merchants have been an integral part of world trade since at least the time of the earliest Silk Route from China to the West. Today a group of traders from Nepal maintain this tradition. Today their travel is by economy jet and inexpensive train. The countries involved are primarily thos6 with historic ties to the mercenary Ghurka forces under the British. The traders are well organized and limited to a few‐families, primarily from the Pokhara Valley in Nepal. Their goods begin with products from Nepal and Tibet, but they also move goods gathered along their route. They represent a charming anomaly in the modern world, a touch of the old Asia.  相似文献
