Pornoprecariedad: crisis biopolítica,trabajo y régimen visual en Hermosa juventud (Jaime Rosales, 2014)

ABSTRACT

Entendiendo por “pornoprecariedad” el entramado visual que explota y consume como forma de entretenimiento la exhibición de las nuevas formas de miseria en las que se sostiene y que reproduce el neoliberalismo, en este artículo se analiza cómo el largometraje de ficción Hermosa juventud (2014), de Jaime Rosales, cuestiona constructos sobre los que se asienta dicho acercamiento mediático dominante a la precariedad. Relacionar críticamente precariedad con pornografía hace emerger problemáticas relacionadas con la representación visual, la recepción de esta y la dimensión ética de ambas, planteando interrogantes acerca de la responsabilidad, el mirar o las relaciones de género y poder. El film de Rosales dialoga con tradiciones artísticas y reflexivas que trabajan con desarrollos socioeconómicos de largo alcance que la crisis biopolítica patente especialmente desde 2008 en la Europa meridional ha sacado a la luz.

Book reviews

Drawing on methodologies and theories used to understand forms of material culture, this paper traces the spatio-temporal lives of a group of medicine chests manufactured by Burroughs Wellcome and Co., the business co-founded by Henry Wellcome which is now known as GlaxoSmithKline. The paper examines the biographical, historical and commercial histories connected with these objects. In particular, it considers how the chests became embroiled within narratives of progress and modernity associated with the production and promotion of ‘modern’ pharmaceuticals and the establishment of a collection of objects through which Wellcome attempted to trace the ‘history of medicine and mankind’ from evolutionary perspectives. Using empirical research from a variety of contexts, the paper therefore reflects on how the chests’ circulation, use and display shed light on historical geographies of science, collecting, commerce and empire in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Le parcours des pharmacies portatives à travers le monde: esquisse sur les géographies de la cueillette et des produits pharmaceutiques

En s'appuyant sur des méthodologies et des théories qui servent à comprendre les formes de culture matérielle, cet article esquisse les vies spatiales et temporelles d'un ensemble de pharmacies portatives fabriquées par l'entreprise Burroughs Wellcome et cie, cofondée par Henry Wellcome et qui est connue aujourd'hui sous le nom de GlaxoSmithKline. Cet article aborde sous les angles biographique, historique et commercial les histoires associées à ces objet. Il se penche en particulier sur la façon dont les pharmacies se sont mêlées aux récits sur le progrès et la modernité liés à la production et la promotion de produits pharmaceutiques «modernes» et à la constitution d'une collection d'objets à partir desquels Wellcome a tenté d'esquisser dans une optique évolutive une «histoire de la médecine et de l'humanité». [Agrave] partir de recherches empiriques issues d'un large éventail de contextes, cet article examine donc comment la diffusion, l'usage et la présentation des pharmacies peuvent donner des renseignements sur les géographies historiques de la science, de la cueillette, du commerce et de l'empire à la fin du dix-neuvième et au début du vingtième siècle.

Botiquines de medicina trotamundos: análisis de las geografías de coleccionar y farmacéuticos

Haciendo uso de metodologías y teorías que se emplea para entender formas de cultura material, este papel detalla las vidas espacio-temporales de un grupo de botiquines de medicina, fabricados por Burroughs Wellcome and Co., una empresa cofundada por Henry Wellcome, que hoy en día es conocida como GlaxoSmithKline. El papel examina las historias biográficas, históricas y comerciales relacionadas con estos objetos. En particular, considera cómo los botiquines llegaron a verse envueltos en narrativas de progreso y modernidad, asociadas con la producción y promoción de farmacéuticos modernos y el establecimiento de una colección de objetos, por los cuales Wellcome pretendía detallar la ‘historia de la medicina y del hombre’ desde perspectivas evolucionarias. Haciendo uso de investigaciones empíricas de varios contextos, el papel considera cómo la circulación, el uso y la exposición de los botiquines revela las geografías históricas de ciencia, coleccionar, comercio e imperios en la última parte del siglo 19 y la primera parte del siglo 20.

Guest Editorial: Does Anglophone hegemony permeate Gender,Place and Culture?

This editorial is seen as a comment on the on-going concern expressed in several Anglophone geography journals about the hegemony of Angloamerican production and its role in formulating the terms of international academic debate. We examine the extent to which Angloamerican dominance is equally true with regard to feminist geography, by looking at how/whether Gender, Place and Culture (GPC) deals with this bias. Finally we forward some suggestions for positive action towards enhancing the international character of the journal.

¿La hegemonía Anglosajona impregna Gender, Place and Culture?

Esta nota editorial trata de un tema que en la actualidad es motivo de preocupación en algunas revistas anglosajonas, la hegemonía de la producción anglosajona en geografía y su papel crucial en la formulación de los debates académicos internacionales. A través del anàlisis de la revista Gender Place and Culture, se discute cómo esta situación se da también en la geografía feminista. Finalmente, se proponen una serie de acciones positivas para potenciar el carácter internacional de la revista.

The practice and circulation of biodiversity assessment in tropical Mexico

Biodiversity assessment is considered a necessary activity in the planning of nature conservation. This activity is shown to gain authority by accessing an epistemic community of scientists and institutions. This is done through a process of socialization that includes the production of immutable mobiles and their circulation in networks only accessible through scientific practice. Local (non-scientific) modes of describing nature are shown to be capable of circulating in far-reaching but different networks. It is argued that the concept of biodiversity is culturally situated and yet the purpose of biodiversity assessment is to define territorialities across cultural divides. It can therefore be considered a post-colonial enterprise. It is suggested that a more hybrid view of nature is required and that biodiversity scientists have to be prepared to negotiate their representations of nature with those of other social groups.

La pratique et la diffusion de l'évaluation de la biodiversité dans le Mexique tropical

L'évaluation de la biodiversité est reconnue comme une activité essentielle à la planification de la conservation de la nature. Il est établi que cette activité, en accédant à une communauté épistémique composée de scientifiques et d'institutions, jouit d'une plus grande autorité. Cela se produit par un processus de socialisation comprenant, entre autres, la production de mobiles immuables et leur diffusion à travers des réseaux accessible uniquement par la pratique scientifique. Il est démontré que les procédés locaux (non scientifiques) utilisés pour décrire la nature peuvent être diffusés à travers des réseaux vastes mais différents. Si le concept de la biodiversité est culturellement déterminé alors que le but de l'évaluation de la biodiversité est de définir des territoires au-delà des divisions culturelles, il est soutenu qu'il peut donc être considéré comme une démarche postcoloniale. Une perspective plus hybride sur la nature est proposée et les experts scientifiques en biodiversité doivent être disposés à négocier leurs représentations de la nature avec les membres d'autres groupes sociaux.

La práctica y circulación de la evaluación de biodiversidad en el trópico Mexicano

La evaluación de biodiversidad se considera una actividad necesaria en la conservación de la naturaleza. Esta actividad gana autoridad por obtener acceso a una comunidad epistémica de científicos e instituciones. Lo hace mediante un proceso de socialización que incluye la producción de móviles inmutables y la circulación de ellos en redes accesibles exclusivamente por la práctica científica. Se demuestra que modos locales (no científicos) de describir la naturaleza son capazes de circular en redes distintas pero de gran alcance. Se sugiere que la noción de biodiversidad es cultural y, sin embargo, el objetivo de la evaluación de biodiversidad es el de definir características territoriales que cruzan líneas divisorias culturales. Por lo tanto, puede ser considerado una iniciativa pos-colonial. Se sugiere que hace falta una concepción más híbrida de la naturaleza y que los científicos en el campo de biodiversidad deberían estar preparados a negociar sus representaciones de la naturaleza con las de otros grupos sociales.

‘Recíbanlos con cautela y consideración’: las pugnas por el poder entre el personal de la Compañía de Jesús en la Nueva España durante el generalato de Claudio Acquaviva (1581–1615)

Los obstáculos impuestos a los americanos para entrar a la Compañía de Jesús fueron una constante en la Nueva España durante el generalato de Claudio Acquaviva (1581–1615). Si bien aquellos pueden ser considerados como la prolongación de un debate que había comenzado con la llegada de los primeros franciscanos en 1524, y como parte de tensiones que existían a nivel global sobre la viabilidad de aceptar no europeos en las órdenes religiosas, esta cuestión evolucionó conforme a los nuevos estándares de la Iglesia postridentina, y a los cambios sociales y políticos del virreinato. Las tensiones provocadas por diversos grupos sociales emergentes al reclamar sus propios espacios dentro de la sociedad novohispana, ocasionaron que la discusión en torno a la creación de un clero indígena se subsumiera en una serie de pugnas entre diferentes facciones de la Compañía de Jesús, bajo la sombra de los poderes de la Corona española y Roma. Así, en una época en donde la Compañía de Jesús se debatía sus prioridades apostólicas con la disyuntiva colegios/misiones, el caso de la Provincia de México nos muestra cómo este problema estuvo inmerso en una lucha de bandos por los puestos de poder.

Against the Odds: Does Geography make a difference?

In this article, the author examines her experiences in one geography department, as a black scholar and mother from a working class background, to ponder whether geography has helped or hurt her odds of success in academia. The odds against the author are briefly reviewed through a consideration of work relevant to the success of mothers and women of color graduate students and faculty members. The retelling of the author's experiences reveals a general lack of sensitivity to and acceptance of difference on the part of some geographers attributable to issues of visibility and cultural goodness of fit. Though geography has not made a difference in assisting her in beating the odds of success in academia, the author concludes that doing so is achievable and begins with a sense of respect for difference, making the discipline relevant to a broader cross-section of the population, and improving relationships within and between disaffected groups, such as women of color scholars, inside and outside the discipline.

¿Contra las probabilidades: Hace un diferencia la geografía?

En este artículo el autor, como erudita negra y madre de la clase obrera, examina sus experiencias en un departamento de geografía y reflexiona si la geografía las ayudó o las dañó a sus oportunidades de éxito in la academia. Las posibilidades contra el autor se revistan a través de una consideración de trabajo relevante al éxito de madres y de mujeres de color como estudiantes graduados y miembros de la facultad. El re-contando de las experiencias del autor revela una falta generalmente de sensitividad y aceptación de la diferencia de la parte de algunos geógrafos y que se atribulan de cuestiones de visibilidad y “bondad de apropiado” cultural. Aunque geografía no ha hecho una diferencia en ayudando el autor para superar a las probabilidades de éxito en academia, el autor concluyó que la posibilidad de superarlas existe y se empieza con un sentido de respeto de la diferencia, haciéndose la disciplina relevante para una porción más extenso de la población, y mejorando las relaciones dentro y entre grupos desafecto como las eruditas que son mujeres de color, adentro y afuera de la disciplina.
