敦煌《书仪镜》写本S.6111+S.10595考释

<正>一敦煌文献中《书仪镜》写卷保存有S.329、S.361、S.9713、S.6111、S.10595、P.4784共6个卷号。S.9713+S.329+S.361(以下称作"甲本")为同一写卷断裂而成的三个残卷的拼接,赵和平、郝春文等先生已经做了非常全面细致的研究~①。S.6111+S.10595(以下称作"乙本")是同一写卷断裂成的两个残片的拼接,由于仅保存20馀行,学界未曾对此乙本有过校录研究。在校读原卷时,我们发现仅保存20馀行的乙本是一件抄写质量较高的写卷,保存下来的书仪残文,有     

S.C并非胡适笔名

1923年9月16日,<努力周报>发表署名S.C的文章<"大国民"的外交>.史学界认为该文是胡适所作,S,C是胡适笔名.实际上,从用语、思想观念及1923年9月前后胡适的居行及著述等方面考察,均可断定<"大国民"的外交>非胡适所作,S.C不是他的笔名.     

REPRESENTATION IN THE U.S. ARMED FORCES?

On November 8, 1978 several years of activity in the Congress and concern by the Department of Defense culminated in Public Law 95–610 when President Carter signed bill S.274. This law prohibits union organizations of the armed forces, membership in military labor organizations by members of the armed forces, and recognition of military labor organizations by the Government. Severe sanctions can be imposed for violations. Since representation is a broader concept than collective bargaining, P.L. 95–610, even should it survive possible court challenges to its constitutionality, does not settle the basic issues. These issues focus on (1) the changing demography and enlistment rules for the armed forces; (2) the response of the Department of Defense to these changes; and (3) the evolution of the various organizations of present and former military personnel into more union-like activities. This paper addresses the policy implications of the foregoing three factors and suggests approaches compatible with both our military needs and our civilian traditions.

U.S. Census Bureau Area Measurements for Sub-County Areas and Clarence Batschelet’s U.S. Population Density Map of 1942

ABSTRACT

During the Second World War, the U.S. Bureau of the Census published a novel population density map for the U.S. that used minor civil divisions as its areal basis. Prior to that time, the national-level area measurements required to calculate densities for such sub-county units were unavailable. The data that enabled the production of the map published in 1942 were collected by clerical workers who were employed as part of a joint project between the Census Bureau and the Works Progress Administration. The area measurements, made using planimeters, were used with 1940 Census of Population data to compute densities that are represented on the map using a choropleth technique.     

J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and intellectual history

ABSTRACT

Recent thinking about Intellectual History has moved beyond studying only verbal texts, to encompass other kinds of visual and aural texts that can be vehicles for generative thought. Where might music fit into this expanded conception? If ideas are defined purely as concepts that can be expressed in words, music can be no more than an “epiphenomenon”, a consequence or representation of ideas that lie behind it, but not capable of embodying those ideas in itself. Yet to many musicians, it seems obvious that music can function as a way in which ideas are developed and worked out. What kinds of knowledge might be embodied in music, then, and how do its meanings change over time? In this paper, I examine some of these issues through consideration of one of the key texts of Western art music, J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, exploring how it was conceived in a liturgical context in Bach’s time, how its meaning changed when transposed to the very different milieus of concert performance in nineteenth-century Berlin and colonial Sydney, and as it has been re-imagined in a variety of recent staged and recorded versions.     

Does Income Distribution Affect U.S. State Economic Growth?*

Abstract. Numerous models propose an income‐distribution/growth linkage, but the empirical evidence is ambiguous and depends on the regression approach. Mixed findings are not unexpected if there are differing short‐ and long‐term responses. Approaches utilizing cross‐sectional variation primarily reflect long‐run effects, whereas those using time‐series variation primarily reveal short‐run effects. This study reconciles these issues using U.S. state data. After allowing for short‐ and long‐run responses and for separate effects between the tails and middle of the distribution, the consistent pattern is the middle‐class share and overall inequality are positively related to long‐run growth. However, the short‐run income‐distribution response is less clear.
