During the 19^th century, the question of the relation between the soul and the body was deeply renewed by German psychological studies. The new elaborated conception of the relationship between the psychical and the physical coincides with the appearance of a cognitivist paradigm, in which mental phenomena are considered as entities that may be individualised, isolated, and then correlated with the activity of specific neural substrates. German psychologists were confronted with the problem of the correlation between psychical life and the nervous system (localisation of mental phenomena and nature of this correlative relationship), and propose an extensive analysis on the neural conditions and the emergence of psychical processes.     

Estonian Swedish Ethnic Survival – Examples from Nuckö in the Interwar Period

Abstract

A long-term perspective is important in studies of ethnic groups and their opportunities for survival. This case study deals with the Swedish population in Nuckö (Noarootsi), Estonia, during the interwar period. Even though the Swedish population declined as a whole, some villages succeeded in maintaining their Swedish affiliation. Settlement patterns and varying opportunities to own land are important factors behind these differences. The Estonian–Swedish cultural awakening in the interwar period made it easier for people to show their Swedish ethnic identity more openly. Inhabitants in villages that already at the end of the nineteenth century had a large proportion of Estonians in their population, reacted more positively to the state's request that people change their surname as part of the assimilation policy of the 1930s. Even though people in some villages chose to register a change in ethnic status, a change of surname, and even changed their use of language, they may nonetheless have remained committed to their former Swedish ethnicity on a private level. It is crucial to combine different kinds of data, such as church records, censuses and interviews, in order to illustrate the complexities of ethnic identity from a variety of different angles.     

Wohnungsbaugenossenschaften als Motor der Stadtteilentwicklung Das Beispiel „Bremer Höhe“ in Berlin/Prenzlauer Berg

Abstrakt Galt vor noch nicht allzu langer Zeit unter Stadtforscherinnen und Wohnsoziologen das Einfamilienhaus am Rande der Stadt uneingeschr?nkt als das bevorzugte Wohnleitbild der Bev?lkerung in der Bundesrepublik, so zeichnen jüngere Untersuchungen zum Wohnverhalten das überraschende Bild einer „Renaissance des Wohnens in der Innenstadt“ (Brühl et al. 2005). Eines der berühmtesten, wenn nicht gar das Paradebeispiel für eine solche Entwicklung ist der Berliner Stadtteil Prenzlauer Berg. Welchen positiven Einflu? Neugründungen von Wohnungsbaugenossenschaften in Innenstadtquartieren auf zahlreichen zentralen st?dtischen Handlungsfeldern leisten k?nnen, wird im vorliegenden Beitrag anhand der Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft Bremer H?he eG exemplarisch dargestellt. Dazu z?hlen die Stabilisierung der Sozialstruktur, die Aktivierung privaten Kapitals aus dem Quartier selbst sowie die F?rderung bürgerschaftlichen Engagements.

Abstract

The productivity of modern agriculture is a result of a remarkable fusion of technology and science. The emerging skepticism about the role of science in society has led to a questioning of the benefits from technical change in agriculture and there is a rising demand for more effective social control over the development and use of agricultural technology. Agricultural science cannot evade responsibility for the costs as well as the benefits of technical change. But it is in society's interest to let the burden of responsibility rest lightly and to insist that agricultural science maintain its commitment to expanding the productive capacity of the resources used in agricultural production. But society should also insist that agricultural science embrace an agenda that includes a concern for the effects of agricultural technology on the health and safety of agricultural producers; a concern for the nutrition and health of consumers; a concern for the impact of agricultural practices on the aesthetic qualities of both natural and man-made environments; a concern for the quality of life in rural communities; and a concern for the implications of technical choices for the options that will be available in the future. The agricultural science community should, in turn, expect that society will acquire a more sophisticated perception of the contribution of agricultural technology to the balance between man and the natural world. It is also time for the general science community to begin to follow the lead of agricultural science in embracing the fusion of science and technology rather than continuing to hide behind the indefensible intellectual and class barriers that have been retained to protect its privilege and ego from contamination by engineering, agronomy and medicine.

Das Netzwerk „VITAL CITIES“ Stärkung polyzentrischer Stadtsysteme durch Förderung des Einzelhandels in den Innenstädten

Abstrakt Das Entstehen von Einkaufszentren „auf der grünen Wiese“ f?rdert einen schnellen Zersiedlungsprozess, au?erdem führt es zu erh?htem Verkehrsaufkommen und Umweltproblemen. Diese Prozesse nehmen negativen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung des st?dtischen Lebensraums, die Fl?chen für Wohnen und Infrastruktur sowie die Freifl?chensituation. Sie laufen damit dem Ziel einer nachhaltigen Siedlungsentwicklung zuwider. Die Ansiedlung von Einzelhandelsunternehmen in den Innenst?dten kann diesen Tendenzen entgegenwirken. Das INTERREG IIIB-gef?rderte Projekt VITAL CITIES will mit verschiedenen Ma?nahmen und Untersuchungen in sieben Projektl?ndern dazu beitragen, polyzentrische Stadtstrukturen zu st?rken und eine ausgewogene Raumentwicklung im CADSES-Raum zu erreichen. Im Ergebnis des Projekts steht die „Comprehensive Urban Retail Trade Improvement Strategy“ (CURTIS), in die die Ergebnisse aller Aktivit?ten einflie?en. Bestandteil sind unter anderem Empfehlungen, neue rechtliche und planerische Instrumente auf nationaler oder regionaler Ebene zu implementieren.
