Christian realism is a concept normally associated with the US theologian and ethicist Reinhold Niebuhr. However, Niebuhr was not alone in warning Christians of the dangers of utopianism and trying to promote a religiously inspired political realism; thinkers from a number of countries had similar aspirations. In this context, the Russian philosopher Semyon Liudvigovich Frank (1877–1950) deserves particular attention. A Marxist in his youth, Frank became disillusioned with revolutionary ideas before and after the 1905 revolution, and was drawn away from politics to philosophy. However, he remained interested in political questions, both while he was in Russia and after he was forced into exile in 1922. This found expression in the 1940s in a form of Christian realism. Frank rejected the doctrine ‘the end justifies the means.’ But he was a gradualist in his approach to social change, believing that politicians needed to have a pragmatic attitude of mind. A distinctive feature of Frank's approach was the connection he made between spiritual inwardness on the one hand and effective decision-making on the other, although he also saw spirituality as arising in a social context. Ultimately, there was a mystical dimension to Frank's Christian realism that was absent in Niebuhr's doctrine.  相似文献

The development of ancient biography into a Christian literary genre is a central theme of the article. The Vita S. Cypriani, allegedly written by thî deacon Pontius, forms the basis of this study, which examines Pontius’ methods not only of collecting but also of presenting his material. The writing of this first Christian Life is shown to be inspired by the tria genera of school rhetoric. The semidiurnal tidal dynamics of the Antarctic and Arctic mesopause regions (95 ± 15 km) are investigated through comparative analyses of monthly mean tidal wind fields determined from radar measurements at the Scott Base (78°S), Molodezhnaya (68°S), and Mawson (67°S) stations in the Antarctic, and the near-conjugate stations of Heiss I. (81°N) and Poker Flat (65°) in the Arctic region. The main feature common to all stations is the fall equinoctial maximum in amplitude (10–20 m s−1), which is also reproduced by the most recent numerical tidal model. However, the wintertime amplitude growth with height and the shorter vertical wavelengths characterizing the model are features not reflected in the data. There is also a spring equinoctial maximum in the Antarctic data which the model does not reproduce.Examination of interannual variability reveals characteristics similar to those noted in Part I for the mean zonal wind; namely, some degree of year-to-year variability superimposed on apparent long-term decreases of order 0.3–0.5 m s−1 yr−1 (depending on month) in the Southern Hemisphere semidiurnal tidal amplitudes. Numerical simulations presented herein indicate that changes of this magnitude cannot even be induced (via mode coupling) by a change in the mean zonal wind field of order 30%, and are more plausibly explained by a secular change in the tidal forcing by ozone insolation absorption. However, contrary to Part I, the annual mean tidal amplitude is not characterized by any significant secular trend, remaining within the 10.0 ± 2.5 m s−1 range throughout the 1970–1986 period. Analyses of other data sets are required to ascertain confidence in the apparent trend reported here.  相似文献

In 1830, members of the Belgian National Congress asserted that they would not attempt to create an ideal constitution. Rather, they wanted to frame a constitution which would take the existing order into account, which would be adapted to Belgian manners and customs. Their ‘pragmatic conservatism’, as it can be described in distinction to Burke's juridical conservatism, was to an important degree inspired by the writings of Montesquieu. Both the discussion on the monarchy and the debate on the senate were influenced by the Esprit des lois. Indirectly, the debates in the National Congress give evidence of the enormous influence of the Esprit des lois on political thought in the Restoration period.  相似文献

In this, our continuation paper on Helmholtz and Müller, we examine Helmholtz's contributions to sensation and perception, with emphasis on his extension and modification of Müller's theory of specific nerve energies. The material is again presented in biographical-chronological context. We also examine Helmholtz's views on depth and space perception, and his empirical theory of knowledge, which are also compared to Müller's views. It will be shown that Helmholtz remained stimulated by the thoughts and doctrines of Johannes Müller in the sensory-perceptual part of his career, which began early in the 1850s and ended with his death. Nevertheless, Helmholtz's own experiments and new discoveries by others sometimes led him to quite different conclusions.  相似文献
