On the Medieval Ecclesiastical Architecture of Paris

Geophysical survey has shed new light on the history of Cadbury Castle, a hillfort of presumed Iron Age date situated west of the Exe Valley in Devon. At least two prehistoric phases of development have been identified, as well as a previously unknown additional external line of defence which is tentatively suggested to date from the seventeenth-century Civil War. In addition, the finds from a nineteenth-century ‘excavation’ of a shaft or well in the interior are reviewed and found to represent a significant assemblage of late Roman date, possibly suggestive of the survival of pre-Christian practices.     

Early Christian Grave Monuments and Ecclesiastical Developments in 11th-Century Sweden

THE EMERGENCE of churchyards is one of the most significant transformations of the landscape during the conversion to Christianity. This article examines changes in burial and commemorative practices during the 11th century, based on early Christian grave monuments. These are the first examples of churchyard memorials in central Sweden, yet at the same time they also form an integral part of the late Viking-Age runestone tradition. This article presents an analysis of their temporal, regional and contextual backgrounds, tracing developments in the early ecclesiastical landscape. It is concluded that different regional designs of rune-carved funerary monuments are related to substantial differences in the Christianisation process, reflecting variation in early ecclesiastical organisation and providing insight into how the conversion process was related to social and political structures.

Long-Period Ground Motion Simulation and its Impact on Seismic Response of High-Rise Buildings

This paper first critically reviews a seismological model and then a three-segment curve model (in log-log space) to model the Q-f relationship is proposed to overcome the potential biased estimation in the long-period range by the “coda wave” method. The optimal curve-fitting process is performed to determine the Q-f relationship for the Hong Kong region. The calibrated seismological factors are incorporated with the stochastic simulation procedure to generate synthetic ground motions, which are validated through comparison with seismic records. The impact of long-period ground motions on the seismic response of high-rise buildings is finally manifested through a numerical study.
