Abstract

The limestone quarried on Ham Hill near Yeovil in Somerset is very distinctive and readily identifiable. It was used extensively throughout the medieval period for a great variety of purposes. Whole buildings were constructed using it from floor to roof and it was also employed for decorative work and sculpture. A large group of church monuments was carved in Ham Hill stone, especially effigies and cross slabs. Monument production can be appreciated in the context of a much larger industry and analysis of the figures has revealed that the clients were predominantly the local gentry. Consequently, there are significantly more male civilian and female effigies than are typically found elsewhere, such as in Devon and Yorkshire. There is evidence of an awareness of the products from other stone centres in the south-west, which the carvers of Ham Hill stone were willing to imitate in order to satisfy customer requirements.

Abstract

Although the wall-paintings in the three first floor bedrooms and the connecting passage at Ellys Manor House, Great Ponton (SK 927 304), have been known to exist for a considerable time and are amongst the most extensive and important of their period in the country, very little has been written about them and no attempt has been made to co-ordinate the information that is available.

In 1963 a questionnaire on the subject of local funeral customs was circulated by the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, which elicited important information on a range of traditions associated with death. In this paper, accounts of the custom of knocking over the chairs on which the coffin rested immediately prior to the funeral are analysed as a symbol of transference from the natural to the other world.     

安福国会审议民国八年度国家总预算案探析

安福国会成立不久,就不断要求政府尽快提交年度预算决算案。在国会的压力下,1919年6月11日,总统徐世昌正式提交民国八年度国家总预算案。在总预算案审议过程中,焦点问题是军政费用支出,主要是军费、总统府、财政部等机构经费。国会审议结果,不仅军费削减二成,其他各项支出均有减少,政府预算总计减少二成多。在民国财政史上,政府年度总预算第一次正式被立法机构审议通过。安福国会不仅非常重视财政监督权的职责,而且在审议过程中也体现出一定的专业水平。虽然民国八年度国家总预算案最后并未严格实行,但是国会积极行使财政监督权,促进预算民主的努力还是值得肯定的。

The choir-stalls from St Katherine's-by-the-Tower, c. 1365, are the only ones to survive, in part, from the important group of English metropolitan royal ecclesiastical furniture commissions of the mid-fourteenth century. It will be argued that the surviving seating with many of its misericords provides important clues as to the much-debated stylistic origins of the later fully-canopied choir-stalls at Lincoln, c. 1370 and Chester, c. 1390, cathedrals. It will be suggested that the loss of the most important royal commissions at St Stephen's Chapel, Westminster and St George's Chapel, Windsor, is mitigated to some extent by the remarkable but incomplete survival of the choir-stalls at St Katherine's Hospital.
