The Great Physician: mainline Protestant ministers’ expectations of doctors, 1840–1900

I argue that mainline Protestant clergymen adapted to the scientific and cultural developments of the post-Darwin era by encouraging a separation of bodily healing and spiritual healing that was unprecedented in Christianity. I use ministers’ depictions of Jesus in their addresses to physicians to illustrate this change. In 1840 ministers insisted that doctors’ value lay in their willingness to mimic Jesus’s example by healing both bodies and souls. As doctors gained authority in the late 1800s, the clergyman’s new ideal doctor stayed abreast of scientific developments and stuck to healing bodies. Ministers increasingly portrayed Jesus as an exclusively spiritual healer.     

The Great Power Struggle in East Asia 1944–50, Britain,America and Post-War Rivalry

New Zealand's participation in the League of Nations in the 1920s and early 1930s was greatly influenced by the issue of money. Though an original member, New Zealand regarded the League as a distraction at best and at worst a threat to the British Empire. Unsympathetic conservative governments begrudged the cost of membership, in both representation and dues. Obliged to send delegations to the annual League Assemblies, New Zealand governments handicapped their delegates by refusing to give them the resources to represent their country adequately. However, once at Geneva, the dominion's delegates led campaigns to control the League's budget with the aim of reducing the amount the members had to pay as annual contributions. Ironically, New Zealand's determination to keep its distance from Geneva led to its obsession with the League's finances.     

The future of Poland, 1914–1917: France and Great Britain in the Triple Entente

Abstract

THE POLISH QUESTION — whether, and if so how and in what form, to recreate an independent Polish state — was one of the most vexing problems that faced European diplomats during the First World War. Believing that aroused Polish patriotism could be a powerful weapon against the Central Powers, yet fearing that support for Polish national aspirations would alienate their Russian ally and fracture the Triple Entente, British and French statesmen had to decide whether they could include the recreation of Poland among their war aims without jeopardizing the Entente, and hence the chances of victory. Given their different strategic priorities, the French and the British gave different answers.     

SAMUEL GOMPERS AND THE FRENCH-CANADIAN WORKER, 1900–1914

Abstract

Current dissension among Quebec labor groups has its roots deep in the past. This essay argues that Samuel Gompers and the American Federation of Labor bear some responsibility for the contemporary divisions within Canadian labor. At the Berlin convention of the Trades and Labor Congress in 1902, AFL-affiliated international union delegates expelled seventeen groups containing the bulk of organized labor in Quebec. Gompers and his colleagues, sharing all the Anglo-Saxon biases of that era, fully expected to woo them into the American international unions within a brief time. They showed no awareness of the special cultural and historical circumstances governing the evolution of economic institutions in that province. They ignored the early efforts by Quebec clergy to establish independent locals under the guidance of church-appointed chaplains. The AFL continued to rely upon John A. Flett, an Ontarian, and other English-speaking organizers. In consequence dual unionism surfaced again and again in Quebec. Finally in 1909 the AFL hired a bilingual Montreal carpenter, Joseph Ainey, to organize the province, but Ainey soon quit to go into politics. Judging by the dearth of rival unions in Quebec at that time, Gompers concluded that there was little need for the AFL to replace him. Organizing at a leisurely pace and judging their successes by the number of dual unions threatening them, AFL unions generally failed to hire French-speaking organizers, to use literature printed in the French language, or to mount a vigorous campaign in the smaller cities and towns.
