The behaviorist research paradigm represented in human geography is anachronistic and manifestly inappropriate for explaining the results of human activities, such as distinctly constructed cultural landscapes. Phenomenological method is appropriate for explaining human actions on an individual scale, but is not applicable as it stands to the group or regional scale investigated by geography. The suggested technique adapts the fragmented reference plain featured by both phenomenology and relativity-based explanation in physics, to afford justifiable explanations of cultural phenomena.  相似文献

A review of the present state of Soviet medical geography based on an analysis of papers presented at the Second National Medical Geography Conference held in Leningrad in November, 1965. The authors, representing four departments of the Geography Faculty of Moscow University, stress geophysical and geochemical causative factors of human disease and the contributions being made by medical landscape science in relating environmental prerequisites to particular diseases.  相似文献

The effect of mountain climates, solar radiation, soils, waters, plant and animal life on the human organism is analyzed. Environmental conditions and their influence on the state of the organism are discussed separately for low, middle, and high mountains and for highlands or high plateaus.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper (originally published in The North West Geographer, 1997, 1(1), 2–17)) contributes to the debate on journals in geography and the production of geographical knowledge by considering a hitherto neglected issue – the role of regional journals of geography. Initially, an overview is provided which considers issues such as the status of the regional journal within the discipline and its fortune relative to the changing concerns of geography in the late 20th Century. A case study of The Manchester Geographer then critically appraises this particular journal's contribution to geographical knowledge. Finally, and in conclusion, some suggestions are offered which it is believed would ensure that regional journals perform a useful and unique role in the production of geographical knowledge in the 21st Century.  相似文献

Three levels of application of mathematics are considered in order of increasing complexity. The first level involves measurements of processes and phenomena, the second the derivation of empirical relationships, and the third the construction of deductive models reflecting the basic mechanism of processes and phenomena. Examples of the three levels are given: Boyce's city-shape index illustrates the first; and Clark's formula for population density within cities is given as an example of the second. The second level is also illustrated by Medvedkov's procedure for forecasting the interplay of natural and mechanical movement of population, involving the use of matrix algebra. On the third level, Medvedkov constructs models of flows of pedestrians doing their shopping on their way home from work to determine an optimal distribution of retail outlets.  相似文献
