In many spatial analyses and GIS applications, a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is often used to derive a variety of new variables and parameters. Previous research shows that the accuracy of derived variables is affected, not merely by the magnitude of DEM errors and the algorithms applied to derive these variables, but also by the spatial structure of DEM errors. However, the lack of knowledge and understanding of the spatial structure of DEM errors often handicaps the analysis of error propagation. This paper investigates the spatial autocorrelation and anisotropic pattern of DEM error by using directional variograms in the spatial domain and Fourier analysis in the frequency domain. Based on an empirical study, it is concluded that the spatial autocorrelation pattern of DEM errors is anisotropic and scale-dependent, and that the maximum direction and range of the autocorrelation depends upon the orientation and wavelength of the terrain features. For a smooth terrain, the magnitude of DEM errors is correlated to surface slope. For a rugged terrain, the elevation values in DEMs tend to be underestimated in ridges, and overestimated in valleys, but the correlation between the DEM error and surface slope is quite low.  相似文献

Using an equivalent gravity wave f-plane model it is shown that longitude variations in diurnal insolation absorption by tropospheric H2O can account for longitudinal variations of at least ± 12–15% about zonal mean values in the diurnal wind amplitude at low latitudes (0–20°) between 80 and 100 km, by virtue of the non-migrating propagating tidal modes which are excited. Phase variations of about ± 0.75 h also occur. These percentage variations are conservative estimates, since the background migrating (1,1,1) mode appears to be slightly (20–25%) overestimated in amplitude. In addition, the assumed eddy dissipation values, which appear necessary to model the breaking (1,1,1) mode, are larger than generally considered ‘reasonable’ by photochemical modellers. For a photochemically more reasonable eddy diffusion profile, estimates of longitude differences in diurnal wind amplitude are quite similar to the above values below 87 km, but increase to ± 17–25% near 100 km, with accompanying phase variations of ± 1–2 h about zonal mean values. In addition, it is shown that radiative damping by CO2 parameterized by a scale-dependent Newtonian cooling coefficient accounts for no more than a 20% reduction in the amplitudes of diurnal propagating tides above 80 km.  相似文献

A number of features of the stratospheric ozone distribution were revealed by joint millimeterwave observations of ozone emission lines at 142,175 and 110,836 GHz carried out during the winter periods of 1988–1989 and 1989–1990 at the Radioastronomical Observatory of the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and at the Onsala Space Observatory of Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. It is shown that vertical ozone variations observed at the two observatories were connected with large scale dynamical processes that occurred in the stratosphere. When the stratosphere was relatively undisturbed the ozone profiles obtained at both observatories were close to the ozone reference model given by Keating and Pitts. There were periods during a stratospheric warming when the ozone content measured at the two observatories in the 25–40 km altitude range was higher by a factor ~ 1.5 than the model values. Dynamical processes in the stratosphere also gave rise to rapid (4 h duration) and large deviations from the model ozone profile. An ozone layer depletion was observed in the 27–55 km altitude range. The observed ozone variations illustrate the sensitivity of the ozone distribution to stratospheric disturbances including stratospheric warmings.  相似文献

An error model for quantifying the magnitudes and variability of errors generated in the areas of polygons during spatial overlay of vector geographic information system layers is presented. Numerical simulation of polygon boundary displacements was used to propagate coordinate errors to spatial overlays. The model departs from most previous error models in that it incorporates spatial dependence of coordinate errors at the scale of the boundary segment. It can be readily adapted to match the scale of error–boundary interactions responsible for error generation on a given overlay. The area of error generated by overlay depends on the sinuosity of polygon boundaries, as well as the magnitude of the coordinate errors on the input layers. Asymmetry in boundary shape has relatively little effect on error generation. Overlay errors are affected by real differences in boundary positions on the input layers, as well as errors in the boundary positions. Real differences between input layers tend to compensate for much of the error generated by coordinate errors. Thus, the area of change measured on an overlay layer produced by the XOR overlay operation will be more accurate if the area of real change depicted on the overlay is large. The model presented here considers these interactions, making it especially useful for estimating errors studies of landscape change over time.  相似文献

Economic utility indices provide a means of interpreting butchery and transport decisions reflected in the relative abundance of skeletal elements. Because of destructive taphonomic processes, interpreting skeletal element abundances in terms of carcass transport strategies requires that faunal analysts consider only those elements which accurately reflect their original abundances following human discard. In this study we use resampling techniques to examine the impact of sample size on correlations between high-survival skeletal element frequencies and economic utility in four simulated population assemblages reflecting distinct carcass transport strategies. Correlations alone do not accurately reflect the true relationship between bone abundance and economic utility as particular transport strategies have a tendency to generate high frequencies of Type II errors as sample size decreases. We show that the Shannon evenness index can be used as a quantitative means of distinguishing between bone assemblages characterized by subtle variations in skeletal element abundances. The evenness index can also be used to evaluate whether observed correlations reflect sampling error. Results from our simulations are applied to three published faunal assemblages to evaluate likely carcass transport strategies.  相似文献

For many practical applications it is important to know how the flows in a doubly constrained gravity model react to slight variations in the predetermined marginal totals. The first-order approximation of these variations is a linear function on the set of feasible variations of marginal totals, i.e., the set of variations not violating the consistency constraint of the model. Several methods to find a matrix describing this linear function are developed and compared with former contributions to this issue. Finally, applicability of the methods to sensitivity and error propagation analysis is demonstrated.  相似文献

Numerical modelling of the ionosphere requires repeated evaluation of the Chapman function Ch(x, χ). This normally involves a numerical integration of the Chapman expression. Approximate values can be obtained using accurate tables of the error function integral, but large numerical errors make this approach unusable for values of χ less than about 80°. Algebraic expressions are obtained for the rapid, direct calculation of the Chapman function, at any zenith angle and for scale heights from 6 to 120 km. The maximum errors in this calculation correspond to an error of about 0.03° in the zenith angle, while the rms error is half this amount.  相似文献

The present paper derives analytical expressions for the sensitivity of input-output multipliers to errors in the data. The effects on the simple output multipliers are investigated for additive errors, multiplicative errors in the columns, multiplicative errors in the rows, error rectangles, the error couple and the single error, and price changes. In contrast to earlier investigations, the results are not obtained from the Leontief inverse. The present approach focusses on the effects of errors on the eigenvector corresponding to the dominant eigenvalue. It is indicated how similar expressions may be derived for several other multipliers.  相似文献

A numerical data adaptive separation method is developed for the discrimination of quasi-regular magnetic variations from the irregular variations for the determination of the K indices. The method is based on a pattern comparison and discrimination technique using harmonic analyses and is more objective than the hand-scaling method. The wave characteristics of a quiet regular or reference day are compared with those of the disturbed day being examined. The harmonic components that are consistent with those of the reference day are determined by a cosine weighting function. The Fourier coefficients are calculated from these modified harmonics and are then transformed back to the time domain. This ‘regular variation’ is subtracted from the data before the ranges are determined for the semi-logarithmic K scale. The method is tested on digital data from the Canadian magnetic observatories Victoria, Meanook and Ottawa over a 4 month period. The data are at a 10 s sampling interval and encompass the full range of K values (0–9). These K values are compared and checked with hand-scaled values, which were carefully and independently determined from reconstructed magnetograms from the same data. The two methods were found to agree ∼ 97% of the time, with most errors occurring during very irregular periods. This is comparable with values carefully determined by highly skilled observers. It is proposed that the method is suitable for use on a regular basis.  相似文献

Diurnal variations in the propagation direction of atmospheric gravity waves, and the travelling ionospheric disturbances to which they give rise, have been observed in many experimental observations and several modelling studies have demonstrated that this is primarily due to the corresponding diurnal rotation in the direction of the thermospheric wind. Other variations have been attributed to seasonal or other effects, but the effects of variations in the thermospheric temperature have not previously been analysed in detail. We present results from a study of the propagation of gravity waves through a layered atmosphere in which the thermospheric wind and temperature are derived from a three-dimensional time-dependent model. The analysis has been carried out for a range of wave speeds and periods, and for a range of times, seasons and propagation azimuths. Results suggest that a significant diurnal variation in the transmission coefficient for waves propagating through the thermosphere exists with seasonally dependent maxima. Transmission increases for increasing wave period up to about 50 min, after which it remains approximately constant. Maximum transmission occurs for wave phase speeds around 200–250 m/s and falls to zero for speeds less than about 100 m/s. An exception to this rule occurs for waves with periods less than 40 min and speeds less than 50 m/s for which significant transmission appears to be theoretically possible.  相似文献

Quantifying Interpolation Errors in Urban Airborne Laser Scanning Models   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is becoming an increasingly popular data capture technique for a variety of applications in urban surface modeling. Raw ALS data are captured and supplied as a 3D point cloud. Many applications require that these data are interpolated onto a regular grid in order that they may be processed. In this article, we identify and analyze the magnitudes and spatial patterning of residuals from ALS models of urban surfaces, at a range of different scales. Previous research has demonstrated the effects of interpolation method and scale upon the nature of error in digital surface models (DSMs), but the size and spatial patterning of such errors have not hitherto been investigated for urban surfaces. The contribution of this analysis is thus to investigate the ways in which different methods may introduce error, and to understand the uncertainty that characterizes urban surface models that are devised for a wide range of applications. The importance of the research is shown using examples of how the different methods may introduce different amounts of error and how the uncertainty information may benefit users of ALS height models. Our analysis uses a range of validation techniques, including split-sample, cross-validation, and jackknifing, to estimate the error created in DSMs of urban areas.  相似文献

Facility location models are examined as a framework for generating rain gauge networks designed to reduce errors in mean areal precipitation (MAP) estimation. Errors in estimating MAP may be divided into two types: (i) capture error, not observing a storm which occurs in a gauged area, and (ii) extrapolation error, using a rain gauge measurement to represent a heterogeneous area. In this paper, five rain gauge location models are developed to minimize these errors. The models include adaptations of the maximal covering location problem, the p-median model, and three models derived from multicriteria cluster analysis. The models are tested using precipitation data from an experimental watershed maintained by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Arizona. Analysis of the results reveals, for the particular watershed, that (1) in sparse networks, location of rain gauges can play a larger role than number of rain gauges in reducing errors in MAP estimates; (2) models based on mean hydrologic data provide nearly as good networks as models based on spatially correlated data; and (3) models yielding the best networks for estimating precipitation for flood predictions are different from the models providing the best precipitation estimates for low flow forecasts.  相似文献

This paper is based on rock art sites of the Maloti-Drakensberg massif (South African part), where more than 600 decorated shelters have thus far been identified. Being both institutionalised heritage sites open to the public and living heritage sites associated with various social practices and utilizations, their preservation requires us to consider the complexity of the values attributed to them. Combining a multidisciplinary and empirical approach, our paper highlights the processes of hybridization between attributed values, which therefore do not adhere to a strict category approach. Being strongly linked to the contexts in which they are articulated, their identification is coupled with a consideration of the macrodynamics in which rock art sites are integrated, as well as an analysis of the links between these different contexts and the value systems identified. In conclusion, the operational dimensions of such a methodology is questioned and some initial possibilities for action are proposed.  相似文献

本文基于计量经济学模型及统计分析方法,以1991~2011年中国入境旅游相关数据为基础,探究金融危机等事件下中国入境旅游的受损格局与影响机制.研究发现:(1) 各客源国或地区到中国旅游人数均出现2010年恢复效果明显、2011年恢复效果较弱的特征,但受损幅度差异很大,恢复状况也不尽相同.截至2011年底,各客源国或地区到中国旅游人数均未恢复至预测水平.(2) 各客源国或地区收入水平、自身价格和替代价格的变化量,与各客源国或地区到中国旅游人数的减少量具有长期协整关系.收入水平、自身价格和替代价格的变化最终导致了入境旅游人数的减少.游客在考虑到中国旅行时,个人收入成为大部分客源国或地区游客的主要决定因素,自身价格和替代价格的影响效果也不可忽视.  相似文献

ABSTRACT This paper concerns the nature and extent of error introduced to regional input-output multipliers by errors associated with the estimation of regional purchase coefficients (rpc's). Using the Washington State input-output model and computer simulations, estimates of multiplier error are generated for two distinct sources of rpc error. The results indicate that multiplier error from both rpc sources may be significant and support the findings of previous studies which highlight the importance of error introduced to the household purchases column for multiplier accuracy.  相似文献

In this simulation study, regressions specified with autocorrelation effects are compared against those with relationship heterogeneity effects, and in doing so, provides guidance on their use. Regressions investigated are: (1) multiple linear regression, (2) a simultaneous autoregressive error model, and (3) geographically weighted regression. The first is nonspatial and acts as a control, the second accounts for stationary spatial autocorrelation via the error term, while the third captures spatial heterogeneity through the modeling of nonstationary relationships between the response and predictor variables. The geostatistical‐based simulation experiment generates data and coefficients with known multivariate spatial properties, all within an area‐unit spatial setting. Spatial autocorrelation and spatial heterogeneity effects are varied and accounted for. On fitting the regressions, that each have different assumptions and objectives, to very different geographical processes, valuable insights to their likely performance are uncovered. Results objectively confirm an inherent interrelationship between autocorrelation and heterogeneity, that results in an identification problem when choosing one regression over another. Given this, recommendations on the use and implementation of these spatial regressions are suggested, where knowledge of the properties of real study data and the analytical questions being posed are paramount.  相似文献

Most archaeologists using obsidian hydration dating (OHD) in the United States develop hydration rates from association of obsidian hydration rims with dates based on radiocarbon, subsequently using the rate for chronometric analysis. The overall accuracy of the process has never been quantified. This paper reports an accuracy analysis in which sources of uncertainty are defined and modeled and their effects quantified. A Monte Carlo simulation is used to quantify errors from rate development, while uncertainties in age resulting from chronometric analysis are calculated analytically. For typical ranges of error values, hydration rate errors of ∼5% or less are achievable in the absence of systematic errors, with errors of chronometric age estimates ∼20–30% or less.  相似文献

School children's use of their home during the after-school hours has become a controversial question in Finnish society. The article discusses cultural conceptions and uses of home as a specific space for children by comparing two different sets of empirical data: children's accounts of their after-school spaces and media debate on the same topic. Activated public concern in media accounts is analysed as a process of re-defining the properties of ‘proper places’ for children, whereas children's accounts are interpreted as expressions of local cultures. For the children, home is an ideal place for spending after-school time, while the public debate portrays the home as empty and children as lonely and unsafe. Definitions of home in after-school time are considered as part of a broader cultural process of re-defining contemporary Finnish childhood in which control turns out to be a crucial dimension of children's ‘proper places’.  相似文献

Archaeologists are adept at analyzing variation in artifacts. The discipline has well established and tested methods to track change through time and to evaluate the function of artifacts that depend upon measures of variation in the archaeological record. Although a critical concept, the means by which variation in material culture is generated is not well understood. This paper explores one source of variation, copying errors, and systematically examines how cultural transmission processes act to amplify, reduce, or maintain such variation. Using simple models, we generate expected distributions for the amount of variation that occurs through time under varying circumstances. This variation is caused by small errors that are transmitted from one person to another in the propagation and replication of cultural traits. These baseline values provide useful null models for explaining variation in prehistoric assemblages of artifacts. We use measurements of projectile points from Owens Valley and Woodland ceramics from Illinois to demonstrate the value of this approach.  相似文献
