Hindus: A Superior Race

Abstract. In this contribution I want to first examine some aspects of the influence of Orientalism and Christianity on the construction of a notion of Hinduism which could serve as the basis for nationalism. Second, I want to explore two influential claims about the uniqueness and superiority of the Hindu religion and its practitioners. The first claim is that Hinduism is the religion of a superior race, namely the Aryan race. The second claim is that Hinduism is a religion which is spiritually superior to other religions. These two claims are never completely separate from each other, but are differently emphasised by different Hindu movements.     

Gender,Race, and Rumours: Re-examining the 1943 Race Riots

Focusing on three riots of the World War II era – those of Beaumont (Texas), Detroit, and New York's Harlem – this essay examines the rumours that sparked these disturbances to uncover the gendered ideologies that underlie racial violence. In these rumour narratives, women appear as either rape victims or tortured mothers, while men appear as either depraved rapists or noble protectors. The deployment of these images helped forge a defensive collective identity that facilitated the outbreak of violence. Because racial and gender ideologies were intimately linked, the author argues, race riots must be analysed through the lens of gender in order to be fully understood.     

The Rise and Race of Hastings

Qualitative, quantitative and distributional aspects of the overall results from archaeological surveillance of the routes before and during construction of the M4 and M5 motorways in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset are discussed. By comparing the data from the M4 and M5, and from the M40 in Oxfordshire too, some elements of numerical consistency are adduced for which explanations are sought rather than provided. An implication is that, despite the circumstances of their recovery, archaeological data from motorways are, in bulk, not without significance for the lowland English landscape.

Searching for Yiong Tibetan Knifes

Ten Hours＇ Road Travel for Only Fifty-Five Kilometers Staff from the Information Office of Pome County informed us that Yiong Town produced a special Tibetan knife. This kind of knife has beautiful color patterns zigzagging along the edge of the knife. Therefore, the knife is also referred to as the ＂rainbow knife＂. It is handmade in a tradition inherited from local ancestors several generations ago. It can be referred to as a Yiong specialty. Desiring to have a look, we decided to drive to Yiong. Although staff from the Information Office of Pome County tried several times to make a phone call via satellite, there was no response which meant no guide or interpreter to lead us, so we had to be selfsufficient. Nevertheless, the attraction of such a fascinating knife lured a team of photographers consisting of five persons to set off together to search for the rainbow knife.
