Gated residential estates have become common features of the landscapes of cities around the world. The proliferation of these estates has attracted significant critical attention from urban scholars who have focused in particular on their contribution to urban segregation. Many commentators also question the possibility and existence of the neighbourhood‐based community that is promised to potential residents by estates developers. They argue that it cannot be delivered primarily because meaningful community does not form in circumstances of privatism. In this paper, we examine what community means to the residents of Macquarie Links, a gated residential estate in the Australian city of Sydney. To this end, the paper traces the interplay of contradictions that define the expectation and experience of community and argues that rather than being in conflict, the experience of community for many in this gated estate is actually underpinned by the structures of private governance that define the estate. In other words, not only is community said to exist in this neighbourhood, but also it is not homogeneity and everyday neighbouring that are pivotal but the governance structure of the estate.  相似文献

Master planned estates have been the subject of considerable academic interest since the publication of Blakely and Snyder's ( 1997 ) typology. The growing provision of private assets, facilities, and infrastructure in such estates has been documented and discussed. However, the extent of this form of residential estate in Australia has yet to be systematically documented. This paper seeks to contribute to knowledge in this field by reference to findings from an investigation in Sydney, Australia, using data from 300 private residential estates constructed under the New South Wales Community Land Development Act, 1989 (community title) over a 20‐year period. The aim is to understand the broad trends emerging in relation to the nature and extent of these types of developments and to consider some of their potential implications. This research suggests that there has been a quiet revolution in residential development and postulates that the extent of privatisation of essential neighbourhood infrastructure has been considerable. The study finds that master planned residential estate development has proliferated, particularly in the outer suburbs and in areas of relative disadvantage, and resulted in enclaves of comparative affluence disconnected from surrounding areas. In addition, the restrictive covenants usually applied in these estates are often designed to prevent change, including future densification or environmental adaptation. To this extent, the privatised nature of these estates puts them beyond the reach of broader urban planning goals.  相似文献

Although there are many studies of the residential segregation of ethnic groups in cities in various parts of the world, very few address the degree to which segregation levels vary across an urban system, let alone rigorously analyse those variations. Data on segregation across all US Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in 1980 and 2000 at the census tract scale have been analysed, using a modified index of isolation, to examine variations in segregation levels, according to their size, the relative size of the various ethnic minorities there, their ethnic diversity, and their location. Strong relationships are identified for all three of the country's major ethnic minority groups – Blacks, Asians and Hispanics. These suggest that Asians and Hispanics are disadvantaged in the labour and housing markets, so that as their number increases so does their level of segregation. Blacks are disadvantaged too: their segregation is compounded by a legacy of decades of discrimination, especially in the older‐established parts of the country.  相似文献

老龄化程度不断加深给区域经济社会发展带来了严峻挑战,如何保障老年人口享有积极与健康的生活质量,提升其幸福感和满意度成为当前的重要研究课题。论文基于问卷抽样调查数据,以合肥市为研究案例地,从主观与客观两个层面入手构建结构方程模型,重点厘清客观建成环境、主观建成环境对老年人居住满意度的影响。研究结果表明:(1)合肥市老年人对社区居住满意程度为比较满意,但不同个体属性的老年人居住满意度具有明显差异,户籍、性别等特征老年人的群体差异最突出,家庭结构对老年人居住满意度的影响不显著。(2)主观建成环境要素对老年人居住满意度具有显著正向影响(路径系数为0.81),社区治安情况、美观程度、交通通达性与社区娱乐设施等感知特征对居住满意度的影响程度依次递减,但客观建成环境要素总体对老年人居住满意度呈弱负相关性。(3)社区邻里交往对老年人居住满意度具有正向影响,在综合考虑主客观建成环境要素、社会交往等因素后,除性别和户籍、学历和收入外,部分个体特征的影响没有通过显著性检验。  相似文献

The positioning of residential fieldwork early in students' higher education is an established way of attempting to build and engage them in a community of learning. In the study reported here, the benefits of such early residential fieldwork were investigated using Krausse and Coates's seven scales of engagement. These scales consider a number of key indicators – specifically transition, academic, beyond-class, peer, staff–student, online and intellectual engagement. Data on these scales were collected via questionnaires completed by groups of students who did and did not attend such a residential fieldwork event, both before and after the event. A Wilcoxon test of these data showed significant increases in peer and student–staff engagement in the post-fieldwork group only. A Kruskal–Wallis analysis provides evidence that students who had been on residential fieldwork became more involved in a community of learning with both their peers and virtual communities than those who had not. These results support the hypothesis that early residential fieldwork is an effective way of engaging students new to higher education in a community of learning.  相似文献

虚拟社区的广泛应用已给现实社区带来了多方面的深刻影响。其中一类虚拟社区与现实社区已逐步融合,并形成了半虚拟半现实的社区结构,城市智能居住小区即属于这种情况,它为地理学研究虚拟社区问题提供了参考对象。本文的研究目的是为了揭示虚拟社区信息流对现实居住社区人流导引作用的特征。在对国内外研究进行回顾后,以杭州市智能小区为例,分析了其网站信息流导引人流的两点表现-存在性与同质性。研究发现虚拟社区对现实居住行为的导引是客观存在的,其中网站智能性在导引中发挥了巨大作用;而受影响人群的同质化是虚拟社区信息流对居住人群导引的突出特征。  相似文献

This paper analyses built‐up area expansion and socioeconomic segregation within the Greater Paramaribo Region, Suriname. Built‐up expansion between 1987 and 2015 was assessed via time‐series analysis of Landsat images. By identifying visible spatial residential characteristics in Google Earth© images, the residential built‐up area was differentiated into rich, middle, middle to low, and poor residences, signifying different socioeconomic groups. Results show that the built‐up expansion of the region is primarily controlled by the distance to the previously built‐up area, city centre, and roads, as well as land price. The observed expansion mainly consisted of middle and middle to low residences. Dissimilarity indices demonstrate an increasing socioeconomic segregation, especially between rich and poor. A business‐as‐usual model simulation for 2030 indicates that this segregation is likely to remain.  相似文献
