Scintillation observations are described which were made at Kiruna in northern Sweden during three magnetic storm periods in the winter of 1984–1985. The results were obtained using transmissions from the multisatellite NNSS system, so that it has been possible to chart the development of scintillation activity over some 20° of geomagnetic latitude as a function of time for several days throughout each storm. A region of strong scintillation at the highest latitudes near magnetic noon is a common feature on all but the quietest days. This feature, probably associated with soft particle precipitation into the cusp, shows an abrupt boundary which moves equatorwards as the disturbance develops. In the magnetic midnight sector two latitudinally separate zones of scintillation are found, patchy at high latitudes although more sustained in the auroral zone. An absence of auroral scintillations around midnight UT can be followed by prolonged intense scintillation activity at auroral latitudes during the early morning hours on some disturbed days.  相似文献

Water vapor and ozone concentrations measured at mid and high latitudes above Europe during the MAP/WINE Campaign in the winter 1983/1984 are presented. Both water vapor and ozone distributions are found to be variable and structured. On two occasions strong enhancements of mesospheric ozone were recorded, which were probably caused by dynamic effects. The assumption of a photochemical equilibrium for ozone at high latitudes in winter does not appear justified according to the variations measured during MAP/WINE. Water vapor mixing ratios determined in the stratosphere and mesosphere above Scandinavia yield average mixing ratios of near 4 ppmv.  相似文献

Abundances of atomic oxygen and ozone have been measured by various techniques over northern Scandinavia during the MAP/WINE campaign in the winter 1983–1984. On 10 February at Kiruna, Sweden, rocket experiments used resonance fluorescence and twin path absorption at 130 nm to measure [O]between 70 and 178 km. Rocket-borne measurements of nightglow at 557.7, 761.9 and 551.1 nm and at 1.27 μm have also been obtained and [O]values derived from the atmospheric band intensities. Ozone abundances between 50 and 90 km have been determined from rocket-borne measurements of the ν3 9.6 μm nightglow intensity from Andøya, Norway, and Kiruna. These have been compared with [O3] measured on the same day from the Solar Mesospheric Explorer satellite, using measurements of dayglow at 1.27 μm, and with results from other rocket launchings in MAP/WINE. The results show evidence of low, perhaps exceedingly low, [O] and below normal [O3] above the mesopause. Below 75 km at night [O3] exceeded earlier and subsequent observations in the campaign. The measurements were made during a minor stratospheric warming, characterised by an offset polar vortex centred near the measurement zone.  相似文献

The middle and upper atmosphere and the ionosphere at high latitudes are studied with the EISCAT incoherent scatter radars in northern Scandinavia. We describe here the investigations of the lower thermosphere and the E-region, and the mesosphere and the D-region. In the auroral zone both these altitude regions are influenced by magnetospheric processes, such as charged particle precipitation and electric fields, which are measured with the incoherent scatter technique. Electron density, neutral density, temperature and composition are determined from the EISCAT data. By measuring the ion drifts, electric fields, mean winds, tides and gravity waves are deduced. Sporadic E-layers and their relation to gravity waves, electric fields and sudden sodium layers are also investigated with EISCAT. In the mesosphere coherent scatter occurs from unique ionization irregularities. This scatter causes the polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSE), which are examined in detail with the EISCAT radars. We describe the dynamics of the PMSE, as well as the combination with aeronomical processes, which could give rise to the irregularities. We finally outline the future direction which is to construct the EISCAT Svalbard Radar for studying the ionosphere and the upper, middle and lower atmosphere in the polar cap region.  相似文献

The MAP/WINE campaign has yielded information on small scale structure and turbulence in the winter mesosphere and lower thermosphere by a number of very different remote and in situ techniques. We have assimilated the data from the various sources and thus attempted to present a coherent picture of the small scale dynamics of the atmosphere between 60 and 100 km. We review physical mechanisms which could be responsible for the observed effects, such as ion density fluctuations, radar echoes and wind corners. Evidence has been found for the existence of dynamic structures extending over distances of the order of 100 km; these may be turbulent or non-turbulent. The results indicate that gravity wave saturation is a plausible mechanism for the creation of turbulence and that laminar flows, sharply defined in height and widespread horizontally, may exist.  相似文献

Measurements of winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere were carried out during the main phase of the MAP/WINE project in January and February 1984 with the EISCAT UHF incoherent scatter radar near Tromsö, Norway, and with meteorological rockets launched from the Andøya Rocket Range, Norway. The radar measurements yield wind profiles between the altitudes of about 80 km and 105 km and the rockets between about 60 km and 90 km. Results from both techniques are combined to yield mean profiles which are particularly evaluated in terms of tidal variations. It is found that the semidiurnal tide constitutes an essential wind contribution between 85 km and 105 km. Whereas the tidal amplitudes are below 5 m s−1 at about 80 km, they increase to 20–30 m s−1 at 100 km. The average vertical wavelength of 35 km points to the S42 mode, but coupling and superposition of different modes cannot be excluded.  相似文献

With the help of incoherent scatter (EISCAT) data the thermodynamics and electrodynamics of the auroral E-region north east of Andøya Rocket Range has been investigated between 1740 UT and 2040 UT on 31 January 1984. This time period covers the D salvo of MAP/WINE and the EISCAT incoherent scatter data comprise a useful supplement to interpret the rocket data. Good agreement has been found between the EISCAT temperatures and those derived from mass spectrometer data. Neutral wind velocity estimates from EISCAT and from a falling sphere rocket experiment are in satisfactory agreement for the zonal wind component, but disagree for the meridional component.  相似文献

Water vapour and nitric oxide concentrations in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere were derived from infrared emission and positive ion composition measurements above northern Europe during the Energy Budget Campaign 1980. The experiments were performed at different levels of geomagnetic disturbance. Both water vapour and nitric oxide are highly variable. Water vapour mixing ratios between 0.2 ppm and 10 ppm were observed. The nitric oxide peak densities varied by more than a factor of ten. Maximum values of 2 × 109cm−3 were obtained.  相似文献

F-region density depletions in the afternoon/evening sector of the auroral zone are studied with the EISCAT UHF radar. Four case studies are presented, in which data from three experiment modes are used. In each case the density depletion can be identified with the main ionospheric trough. For the two cases occurring in sunlit conditions the electron densities recovered significantly after the trough minimum. Tristatic ion velocity measurements show the development of poleward electric fields of typically 50–100 m Vm−1, which maximize exactly in the trough minimum. A special analysis technique for incoherent scatter measurements is introduced, based on the ion energy equation. By assuming that the ion temperature should obey this equation it is possible to fix this parameter in a second analysis and to allow the ion composition to be a free parameter. The results from two experiments with accurate velocity measurements indicate that the proportion of O+ near the F-region peak decreased from 100% in the undisturbed ionosphere to only 10% and 30%, respectively, in the density minimum of the trough. The loss of O+ is explained by the temperature dependence of recombination with nitrogen molecules. Temperatures derived from radar measurements are very sensitive to the assumed ion composition. For the above case of 10% O+ the deduced electron temperature in the trough was transformed from a local minimum of < 2000 K to a local maximum of 4000 K.  相似文献

Two rockets bearing quadrupole mass spectrometers capable of measuring both positive and negative ion composition were launched from Red Lake, Canada, during the solar eclipse. Both instruments had liquid helium cryopumps and shock-attaching conical samplers. The payloads also contained two Gerdien condensers to measure total positive and negative ion concentrations and ion mobilities. Attitude control systems aligned the payloads with the velocity vector throughout ascent and descent. The first rocket was launched so that the D-region was in darkness 35 ± 8 s on the upleg and about 150 ± 15 s on the downleg for the study of ionospheric decay processes. The second rocket was fired after totality into 75% solar illumination for the study of ionospheric recovery. The positive ion composition above 105 km exhibited a strongly increasing NO+/O2+ ratio with time after second contact due to O2+ charge transfer with NO and a sharply diminished ionization rate. However, in both nights, the ionization below 105 km was created mainly by energetic particle deposition as exemplified by the increased ion concentrations and the composition signatures of a particle event: asignificant enhancement of O2+ below 105 km and large amounts of H5O2+ ions in the D-region which result from the O2+ clustering scheme. H5O2 was the major ion in the upper D-region while H7O+3, H9O4+ and H5O2+ were dominant ions at lower altitudes. Numerous minor species were also detected. The negative ion distributions in both flights exhibited a distinct shelf at 83 ± 2 km, decreasing by more than an order of magnitude by 90 km and with minima near 75 km. In the 75–90 km range, a significant percentage of the negative ions had masses exceeding 160 a.m.u. Comparisons are made with prior negative ion measurements during similar daytime auroral zone absorption (AZA) events. Two striking characteristics of the precipitating particles were apparent from these and past observations in daytime AZA events: there is a near absence of low energy electrons capable of ionizing above about 105 km and there is'a significant spatial and/or temporal variability in the electron flux. This paper is devoted principally to a presentation of the ion composition measurements and associated uncertainties.  相似文献

A method to measure the reflection coefficient of the sporadic E-layer using a conventional ionosonde is described, and some results obtained at Sodankylä, Finland (Φ=63.8°, φ= 120.0°), are presented. The observations are often found to be in agreement with the theoretical frequency dependence of the reflection coefficient of a thin horizontal layer in the presence of mode coupling. Some of the results can be interpreted as indicative of scattering from small-scale irregularities or reflections from larger inhomogeneities in the Es layer.  相似文献

An observational study of the D-region winter anomaly of HF radio wave absorption in lower latitudes has been made during the period of a sudden stratospheric warming of the 1967/1968 winter. By means of large-scale isopleth analysis of the absorption index, ƒmin, and of meridional winds near 70 km height along 60°N, it is found that there exists a winter anomaly in lower latitudes which is comparable in order to that in middle latitudes, resulting from a nitric oxide (NO) increase due to southward transport from higher latitudes by well-developed planetary wave winds. From the daily changes of absorption in the equatorial region, it is found that the enhanced absorption reveals an oscillation with a period of about 2 weeks and has its maximum in the region south of 20°N. The period is similar to that of planetary wave amplitudes in the winter stratosphere and mesosphere, suggesting that an effect of planetary waves could contribute to the equatorial anomaly of the absorption in the D-region.  相似文献

Ariel 3 and 4 satellite observations of the GBR 16 kHz and NAA 17.8 kHz transmissions above the ionosphere in the conjugate hemisphere show that their wave-fields generally show a rapid reduction in signal strength for geomagnetic latitudes greater than 55°–60°. Sometimes, however, the signal strength has been observed to be high in the invariant latitude range > 60°. At certain times during these observations, the signal showed clear evidence of amplification, whilst at other times the pattern of signal strength was displaced to higher latitude with the signal strength integrated over latitude being unchanged from that normally observed. It is shown that the plasmapause can guide both the NAA and GBR signals but that the efficiency of this guiding depends on the plasmapause position. The important condition is found that the plasmapause must be situated sufficiently equatorwards that half the equatorial electron gyrofrequency at the plasmapause position is greater than (or approximately equal to) the transmitter signal frequency. Ray-tracing calculations in a realistic magnetosphere model indicate that for the 16 kHz GBR signal, the efficiency of guiding falls off for Lpp, (the L-value of the plasmapause) > 3.0 and guiding effectively ceases for Lpp > 3.5.Guidance by the plasmapause results in a wave-field at higher latitude than for non-guided propagation. This will only occur when, following geomagnetic storms, the plasmapause position is at a sufficiently low L-value. This is in agreement with the experimental observations of anomalously high latitude signal reception following strong magnetic storms (Kp ≥ 4+).  相似文献

The annual variation of the daytime F2-layer peak electron density (NmF2) is studied at two low latitude stations, Okinawa and Tahiti (geomagnetic latitudes ± 15°) for the sunspot maximum years 1979–1981. Observed values are compared with those calculated using the MSIS model and a simplified version of the continuity equation for day-time equilibrium conditions. Summer-winter differences imply an intensification of the fountain effect on the winter side of the equator at the expense of the summer side. This could be explained by a summer to winter neutral wind. Semi-annual variations, however, appear to be mainly due to changes in neutral composition.  相似文献

Two data sets of ozone density measurements over a wide latitudinal range in the Arctic during summer and winter seasons arc presented. It is shown that geophysical effects manifest themselves in the O3 dynamics in the high latitude region under various circumstances. Therefore a type of total ozone content diurnal variation is a distinctive feature in the auroral oval as well as the polar cap and must be taken into account in any full model of ozone dynamics in the polar regions.  相似文献

Intervals of F-region electron density depletions associated with the main (mid-latitude) ionospheric trough have been studied using latitude scanning experiments with the EISCAT UHF radar. From 450 h of measurements over a one year period at solar minimum (April 1986–April 1987) the local time of appearance of the trough at a given latitude is observed to vary by up to about 8 h. No seasonal dependence of location is apparent, but troughs are absent in the data from summertime experiments. A weak dependence of trough location on Kp is found, and an empirical model predicting the latitude of the trough is proposed. The model is shown to be more appropriate than other available quantitative models for the latitudes covered by EISCAT. Detailed studies of four individual days show no relationship between local magnetic activity and time of observation of the trough. On all four of these days, however, the edge of the auroral oval, evidenced by enhanced electron densities in the E-region, is found to be approximately co-located with, or up to 1° poleward of, the F-region density minimum. Simultaneous ion drift velocity measurements show that the main trough is a region of strong (> several hundred metres per second) westward flow, with its boundary located approximately 1°–2° equatorward of the density minimum. Within the accuracy of the observations this relationship between the convection boundary, the trough minimum and the precipitation boundary is independent of local time and latitude. The relevance of these results is discussed in relation to theoretical models of the F-reregion at high latitudes.  相似文献

A model to calculate electron densities and electrical conductivities in the ionospheric E-region at low latitudes has been developed. Calculations have been performed under photochemical equilibrium and including plasma transport due to the electric field and neutral winds. Results have been compared with observations at Arecibo (18.15°N, 66.20°W), Thumba (8°32′N, 76°51′E) and SHAR (14.0°N, 80.0° E). Good agreement is obtained for Arecibo. For Thumba and SHAR agreement is satisfactory for altitudes above 110 km. Below 100 km, model predictions are too low in comparison with the observed data. The effect of plasma transport on electron densities and Hall and Pedersen conductivities is investigated in detail. A combination of neutral winds and a downward (or westward) electric field can compress the plasma into a thin layer. An upward electric field along with the neutral winds gives rise to a broad, multilayered profile. The ratio of height-integrated Hall to Pedersen conductivities changes from 1.2 to 2 in some cases.  相似文献
