The main object of the campaign reported here was to compare TID characteristics obtained from two essentially different observation techniques: (1) observation of the apparent angular position shifts of Virgo A by the Nançay radioheliograph (47.33°N, 2.15°E) gave azimuths and periods of travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs); (2) differential Doppler shifts of signals from NNSS-satellites recorded simultaneously at Tours (47.35°N, 0.70°E), Nançay and Besançon (47.32°N, 5.99°E) provided azimuths and latitudinal wavelengths. Observations were made during the period 10–30 November 1987, between 6 and 12 h UT. It is found that azimuths obtained from the two techniques are consistent if sufficient averaging over wave trains is performed: averaging over several hours for radio interferometry and averaging over the whole satellite trace for the differential Doppler technique. Averaging is necessary because of (1) the intrinsic dispersion in wave azimuth, (2) the broadness of observed wave spectra and the dispersive properties of gravity waves, and (3) the spatial separation of ionospheric points for the two techniques. Good agreement between the azimuths was achieved by setting the altitude of the TIDs, which is used in the differential Doppler analysis, to about 250 km, appreciably lower than the maximum in electron density (about 350 km). The mean azimuth of observed TIDs was 12° East from South with a standard deviation of about 30°. The dominant period and horizontal wavelength of the observed TIDs were 40 min and 450 km. The East-West coherence length of the TIDs was found to be only of the order of 200 km.  相似文献

A method of determining horizontal velocity vectors and temperature of thermospheric winds from azimuthally different ω-κ diagrams derived from the data of traveling ionospheric disturbances (TID's) observed by an HF Doppler array has been developed. In this method, an analogous property between the Brunt-Vaisala frequency in the atmospheric oscillations and the plasma frequency in the plasma oscillations is applied to the analysis of the observed data. A declination of the resonance branches of the Brunt-Vaisala frequency in the ω-κ diagrams due to a Lorentz transformation is used for the estimation of the velocity vector of the thermospheric wind. This method makes it possible to separate the velocity vector of the thermospheric wind and the propagating directions of the TID's from the azimuthally different ω-κ diagrams. Several results of the velocity vectors during the daytime data are consistent with the results obtained by incoherent scatter radars and theoretical results. Furthermore, a typical dispersion curve which agrees well with those of the acoustic gravity waves derived from the linear perturbation theory under the isothermal atmospheric condition has been also obtained.  相似文献

Charisma is one of the most common explanations for the success of political leaders in obtaining the support of the mass public. Yet authors employing the concept typically begin their analyses by simply assuming the presence of charisma, foregoing more rigorous analyses, including the consideration of alternative explanations for public appeal. Thus, charisma becomes a post hoc attribution, a residual category of explanation that is difficult to evaluate objectively. This article examines the concept of charisma in the context of the American presidency by testing for its consequences, including presidents obtaining unusually high levels of support, support from unusual sources, or especially intense and committed support, or successfully leading public opinion on matters of public policy. I particularly focus on the best-case tests of John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Unable to find systematic evidence of some special form of leadership that we might characterize as "charismatic," I conclude that the concept of charisma is neither salvageable analytically nor helpful empirically.  相似文献

High resolution electron density measurements by EISCAT during the pre-onset phase and onset of an auroral absorption substorm are used to investigate the characteristics of electron precipitation during these substorm phases. The development of the pre-onset phase is the result of a uniform increase of electron fluxes with energies of a few tens of keV, with no particularly hard component. The absorption spike observed at substorm onset contains fine structure when investigated at 10 s resolution, indicating a rapid hardening of the precipitating spectrum at the onset.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal distributions of ionospheric scintillations have been observed at Kashima (36.0°N, 140.7°E) using VHF and UHF signals from low-altitude satellites. From these observations, three different types of prevailing ionospheric scintillations seen from Japan are identified. Scintillations of type I are rather weak scintillations, occur most frequently during the daytime in summer and are primarily associated with the sporadic E-layer. However, considerable occurrences of type I scintillations are also observed during the night in summer and autumn, not necessarily due to the sporadic E-layer but occasionally due to F-layer irregularities which originate from localized midlatitude processes. Type II scintillations are much stronger than type I and occur near the equatorward horizon during spring, summer and autumn. Their occurrences start after sunset, reach a maximum before midnight and decrease subsequently, with a tendency for negative and positive correlations with the magnetic and solar activities, respectively. It is concluded that type II scintillations are the midlatitude aftermath of equatorial plume-associated irregularities and cause trans-equatorial propagation of VHF waves. From observations of type I and II scintillations, the boundary between midlatitude and equatorial scintillations is clearly identified. Type III scintillations are as strong as type II and appear only during magnetically active periods. They can be regarded as another aspect of the severe scintillation events observed on gigahertz waves from geostationary satellites as reported by Tanaka (1981).  相似文献

The effect of a prolonged period of strongly northward Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) on the high-latitude F-region is studied using data from the EISCAT Common Programme Zero mode of operation on 11–12 August 1982. The analysis of the raw autocorrelation functions is kept to the directly derived parameters Ne, Te, Ti and velocity, and limits are defined for the errors introduced by assumptions about ion composition and by changes in the transmitted power and system constant. Simple data-cleaning criteria are employed to eliminate problems due to coherent signals and large background noise levels. The observed variations in plasma densities, temperatures and velocities are interpreted in terms of supporting data from ISEE-3 and local riometers and magnetometers. Both field-aligned and field-perpendicular plasma flows at Tromsø showed effects of the northward IMF: convection was slow and irregular and field-aligned flow profiles were characteristic of steady-state polar wind outflow with flux of order 1012 m−2 s−1. This period followed a strongly southward IMF which had triggered a substorm. The substorm gave enhanced convection, with a swing to equatorward flow and large (5 × 1012 m−2 s−1), steady-state field-aligned fluxes, leading to the possibility of O+ escape into the magnetosphere. The apparent influence of the IMF over both field-perpendicular and field-aligned flows is explained in terms of the cross-cap potential difference and the location of the auroral oval.  相似文献

A combination of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) and 2D proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) relaxometry was employed for the characterization of two groups of similar ceramic fragments from the high-medieval production of the Phlegrean area (Miseno and Cuma, Southern Italy). Both methods are based on the use of non-destructive and portable instruments. This approach allows to correlate complementary microstructural features of ceramics, both dependent and independent of the firing technique.  相似文献

This paper describes the multi-disciplinary approach to reconstruct the face of Dante Alighieri (1265–1321). Since Dante's sepulchre will be opened in 2021, the reconstructive process is based on morphological and metric data collected on the poet's cranium during the formal identification of his remains in 1921 by the anthropologist Fabio Frassetto, as well as on the resulting plaster model. Starting from this plaster model and a morphologically compatible reference mandible, since the original mandible was never found, a 3D digital model of the complete skull was obtained by reverse engineering and virtual modelling techniques. The most important aspect in this work was the method of virtual modelling proposed for the ex novo generation of the mandible. The physical model of the skull (cranium + mandible) was then produced by means of a rapid prototyping system. This model was finally used to recreate Dante's face via traditional facial reconstruction techniques currently used in forensic anthropology.  相似文献

In this paper EISCAT observations of the effect of artificial modification on the F-region electron temperature and electron density during several heating experiments at Tromsø are reported. During O-mode heating at full power (ERP = 240 MW) the electron temperature is increased by up to 55% of its ambient value at altitudes close to the heater interaction height. Measurements of the electron density have revealed both enhancements and depletions in the vicinity of the heater reflection height. These differences are indicative of variations in the balance between the transport and chemical effects. These results are compared with a time dependent numerical model developed from the perturbation equations of Vas'kov and Gurevich [(1975) Geomagn. Aeron.15, 51]. The results of numerical modelling of the electron temperature are in good agreement with the EISCAT observations, whereas there is less good agreement with regard to electron density.  相似文献

We have carried out continuous observations of the tropopause region over Japan for three weeks during the Baiu (early summer rain “in Japan”) season in 1991, by using a VHF Doppler radar (the MU radar), radiosondes launched at the radar site and operational rawinsondes at five meteorological stations. Based on these observations, we try to examine the hypothesis that the multiple tropopauses and the dominant inertio-gravity waves are one and the same feature, and obtain some interesting results that are not inconsistent with this hypothesis. First, vertical wavenumber spectra and hodographs analyzed from the radar wind data in the tropopause region suggest that inertio-gravity waves with vertical wavelengths of ∼ 2 km are quasi-monochromatically dominant (with 2–3 day scale variabilities of 10–20%), and are in accordance with activities of the subtropical jet stream and mesoscale cyclone-front system activities observed by the operational network. Second, striking (potential) temperature fluctuations are detected simultaneously by the radiosondes and rawinsondes, which appear as multiple tropopauses in meridional cross-section analysis. Third, vertical wavenumber spectra analyzed from the radiosonde temperature data are consistent with the radar wind spectrum, if we assume that both wind and temperature fluctuations are mainly induced by the dominant inertio-gravity waves. Finally, we confirm that the dominant interio-gravity waves can be barely detected also from routine rawinsonde (1.5-km running-mean) wind data if the amplitude is larger than 1.5 m/s. However, the monochromatic wave structures are generally quite localized in space and time.  相似文献

Calcite veins in Paleoproterozoic granitoids on the Baltic Shield are the focus of this study. These veins are distinguished by their monomineralic character, unusual thickness and closeness to Neoproterozoic dolerite dykes and therefore have drawn attention. The aim of this study was to define the source of these veins and to unravel their isotopic and chemical nature by carrying out fine‐scale studies. Seven calcite veins covering a depth interval of 50–420 m below the ground surface and composed of breccias or crack‐sealed fillings typically expressing syntaxial growth were sampled and analysed for a variety of physicochemical variables: homogenization temperature (Th) and salinity of fluid inclusions, and stable isotopes (87Sr/86Sr, 13C/12C, 18O/16O), trace‐element concentrations (Fe, Mn, Mg, Sr, rare earth elements) and cathodoluminescence (CL) of the solid phase. The fluid‐inclusion data show that the calcites were precipitated mainly from relatively low‐temperature (Th = 73–106°C) brines (13.4–24.5 wt.% CaCl2), and the 87Sr/86Sr is more radiogenic than expected for Rb‐poor minerals precipitated from Neoproterozoic fluids. These features, together with the distribution of δ13C and δ18O values, provide evidence that the calcite veins are not genetic with the nearby Neoproterozoic dolerite dykes, but are of Paleozoic age and were precipitated from warm brines expressing a rather large variability in salinity. Whereas the isotopic and chemical variables express rather constant average values among the individual veins, they vary considerably on fine‐scale across individual veins. This has implications for understanding processes causing calcite‐rich veins to form and capture trace metals in crystalline bedrock settings.  相似文献

We have detected wind oscillations with periods ranging from 1.4 to 20 days at 80–110 km altitude using Kyoto meteor radar observations made in 1983–1985. Among these oscillations, the quasi-2-day wave is repeatedly enhanced in summer and autumn. We found that the period of the quasi-2-day wave ranges from 52 to 55 h in summer, and becomes as short as 46 to 48 h in autumn in 1983 and 1984. The change in the wave period seems to coincide with a decrease in the amplitude of the zonal mean wind. A quasi-2-day wave event was simultaneously observed in January 1984 at Kyoto (35° N, 136°E) and Adelaide (35° S, 138° E), which are located at conjugate points relative to the geographic equator. Amplitudes of the meridional component at Adelaide are approximately four times larger than those observed at Kyoto. Comparison observations clearly show that the meridional component is in phase and the zonal component is out of phase, respectively, implying antisymmetry of the quasi-2-day wave between the northern and southern hemispheres. Relative phase progressions with height are similar between the Kyoto and Adelaide results for both meridional and zonal components, and indicate the presence of an upward energy propagating wave with a vertical wavelength of about 100 km.  相似文献
