From lidar observations of relative atmospheric density above Aberystwyth (52.4°N, 4.1°W) upper stratospheric and mesospheric temperatures have been derived for a total of 93 nights between December 1982 and February 1985. Excellent agreement was found between radiances synthesised from these temperatures and those measured by satellite-borne instruments. Summer temperatures showed a smooth and regular variation with altitude and reasonably good agreement with the CIRA (1972) model atmosphere. By contrast, winter temperatures showed a much greater variability with altitude and greater changes from night to night, with the frequent occurrence of a large amplitude wave-like perturbation in the mesosphere with about 15 km vertical wavelength and amplitude about 20K between 60 and 80 km.Pronounced warmings of the stratosphere were observed during the three winters of observation. During the warming event occurring in early February 1983 the stratopause temperature increased to 303K at 43 km, while the major warming event of late December 1984/early January 1985 produced a stratospheric temperature gradient of 16K km−1 between 34 and 36 km. During the latter event a distinct local temperature minimum at 32.6 km was observed on New Year's Eve, this descending to 29 km by the following night and being accompanied by a lowering of the stratopause from 43 to 38.5 km in the same period. These results demonstrate the ability of the present technique to resolve the high stratopause temperatures and steep stratospheric temperature gradients which occur during stratospheric warmings, in marked contrast to the limited resolution achieved by satellite experiments.  相似文献

Wind measurements which were carried out during the MAP/WINE Campaign in northern Scandinavia between 2 December 1983 and 24 February 1984 are used to derive background winds and monthly as well as winter mean values from the ground up to 90 km altitude. These mean winds compare favourably to the wind field proposed for the revised CIRA 86, which is deduced from satellite measurements. The vertical structure of the zonal monthly means is similar in both data sets during January and February. The winter mean zonal winds are observed to be slightly stronger in the stratosphere and lower mesosphere during the MAP/WINE winter than the satellite winds proposed for CIRA 86. The long term mean meridional winds are in good agreement up to 60 km. They indicate a dominant influence of quasistationary planetary waves up to 90 km and an ageostrophic poleward flow between 60 km and 85 km over northern Scandinavia, which maximizes at 76 km at about 8 m s−1. The observed short term variability of the wind is discussed with respect to a possible impact of saturating gravity waves on the momentum budget of the middle atmosphere.  相似文献

Molecular oxygen concentrations obtained from the rocket measurements of the absorption profile of solar Lyman-α radiation, in the upper atmosphere over Thumba (8°33′N, 76°52′E), have been used to derive gas temperatures in the 70–90 km altitude region. A mean reference temperature profile for the daytime mesosphere over Thumba obtained from these measurements shows (1) temperatures lower than those given by the CIRA model and (2) a mesopause around 83 km with a temperature of 175 K.  相似文献

A large set of temperature profiles has been obtained in the upper stratosphere and the mesosphere over Europe during the MAP/WINE compaign by the use of different techniques: datasondes and falling spheres launched by metrockets, ground-based OH spectrometers and a Rayleigh lidar. These data have been used to study the large scale variability of the middle atmosphere during the winter 1983–1984. The temperature variations with periods longer than 25 days are clearly related to the succession of minor upper stratospheric warmings observed during this winter. The variations in the period range 10–20 days are at least partially due to westward propagating Rossby waves, of which one mode, with a 12.5 days period, is tentatively identified as the second symmetric mode of the wave number 2.  相似文献

Mean winds at 82–106 km altitude have been almost continuously monitored by the Kyoto meteor radar over the period from May 1983 to December 1985. The mean zonal wind becomes eastward with amplitudes as large as 30 m s−1 in the summer months (May–August), maximizing early in July at 95 km altitude, while it is less than 10 m s−1 at all the observed altitudes during the equinoxes. It is normally eastward in winter at low altitudes, although it sometimes becomes westward during sudden stratospheric warmings. The mean meridional wind is usually equatorward and is weaker than the zonal component. A southward wind exceeding 10 m s−1 is detected in July and August. The observed mean winds are compared with the CIRA 1972 model and coincidences with sudden warmings of changes in zonal wind direction are pointed out.  相似文献

The morphology of the MAP/WINE winter is examined, principally from ground-based and satellite observations. Winter anomaly is evident, occurring in bursts with a west to east shift in time. Auroral activity, particularly with reference to the times of major rocket salvoes, is generally low, with Andøya to the south of the auroral boundary in most cases. Minor stratospheric warmings, of which 4 occurred, are found to correlate with minima in radio wave absorption. Salvo R1 was launched during one of the minor warmings.Using data from a broad sector of Europe, coupling between the lower thermosphere and mesosphere is seen over large areas. Westerly winds are associated with high absorption (winter anomaly) and reversal to easterly winds with stratospheric warmings and low absorption. It is found possible to select cases, from amongst the MT series of rocket launchings, corresponding to quiet conditions, stratospheric warming, winter anomaly and particle precipitation in the general absence of other effects. Examining D- and lower E-region ionisation profiles for these caes it is found that, compared with a quiet night, the stratwarm night shows the lower E-region to have reduced ionisation. The ionisation ledge is of similar shape in all cases, but occurs over different height ranges. The observed effects all point to transport being a major factor and the need to measure vertical transport over the range of geophysical conditions examined is highlighted.  相似文献

Measurements of ion temperature, ion-neutral collision frequency and ion drift in the E-region from the period December 1984 to November 1985 are used to derive neutral temperatures, densities and meridional winds in the altitude intervals 92–120 km, 92–105 km and 92–120 km, respectively. Altitude profiles of temperature and density and their seasonal variations are compared with the CIRA 1972 and MSIS 1983 models and the effects of geomagnetic activity are demonstrated. Semi-diurnal tidal variations in all three parameters are derived and the comparison with lower latitude measurements is discussed.  相似文献

A comparison is made between winds near 95 km altitude obtained from meteor radar measurements at Sheffield and radiances for the top channel of a stratospheric sounding unit (SSU). Three minor warmings and a major warming in the stratosphere during the period 25 December 1983 to 4 March 1984 were found to be associated with characteristic changes in both the zonal and meridional components of the wind above the mesopause. Similar systematic variations in the winds were observed around 12 December 1983, suggesting that a minor warming, the first of the season, developed at that time in the stratosphere. This event has not previously been reported. Its occurrence is confirmed by radiances from the SSU.  相似文献

An attempt is made at the statistical analysis of small-scale disturbances in the stratosphere and mesosphere with the aid of meteorological rocket observations at many stations from 77°N to 8°S for several years.By applying a high-pass filter to daily rocket data in the height range 20–65 km, wind and temperature fluctuations with characteristic vertical scales close to or less than 10 km are obtained, which are considered to be due to internal gravity waves. Results are expressed in terms of parameters which tend to emphasize smallscale vertical fluctuations and which should provide qualitative measures of gravity wave activity. It is found that the gravity wave activity shows a notable annual cycle in higher latitudes with the maximum in wintertime, while it shows a semiannual cycle in lower latitudes with the maxima around equinoxes. It is also found from the standard deviation around the monthly mean that the temporal variability of gravity waves is very large.  相似文献

During early spring, 1985, the MAE-3 (Middle Atmospheric Electrodynamics) Program was conducted at Poker Flat Research Range, Alaska to study the origin of wintertime mesospheric echoes observed with the Poker Flat MST radar there, by probing the mesosphere with in situ rocket measurements when such echoes occurred. Pre-launch criteria required the appearance of echoes exhibiting some wave structure on the MST radar display; these could be met even under weak precipitation conditions with riometer absorption near or above 1.0 dB. Two morning rockets were launched under such conditions, the first (31.048) on 29 March 1985, at 1703 UT and the second (31.047) on 1 April 1985, at 1657 UT. Both payloads were deployed on a high altitude parachute near a 95 km apogee to provide a stable platform for data acquisition within the mesosphere (below 80 km). Each payload carried a solid state detector to measure energetic electrons between 0.1 and 1.0 MeV and an NaI crystal detector to measure x-rays from >5 to >80 keV. Payload 31.048 also carried a positive ion ‘turbulence’ probe which measured ion density changes (ΔNi/Ni) during payload descent, whereas 31.047 carried a nose tip ‘turbulence’ probe designed to measure electron density changes (ΔNe/Ne) during upleg ram conditions plus a Gerdien condenser for the measurement of bulk ion properties during downleg. The energy deposition curves for each event exhibited peak deposition rates between 75 and 80 km with a half width of 16–18 km, almost exclusively induced by precipitating relativistic electrons. They also showed a maximum bottomside gradient between 65 and 75 km. Radar echoes and atmospheric turbulence were observed in the same altitude domain, consistent with the anticipated need for adequate free thermal electron gradients to make such phenomena visible on the radar. The vertical wave structure from radar echoes was found to be consistent with that observed in horizontal wind and temperature profiles measured by Datasondes flown shortly after each large rocket. An analysis of the wave structure from radar data has shown that although large scale waves (λz ~ 7 km) were found to be present, a higher frequency shorter wavelength (∼ 1–3 km) component probably played a more significant role in modulating the signal-to-noise structure of the radar echoes.  相似文献

A survey of stratospheric and mesospheric temperature was performed on a regular basis during winter conditions from the lidar station of the Observatory of Haute Provence (44°N, 6°E). The method uses the range resolved Rayleigh scattering of a laser beam and its latest performances are given. The data presented in this paper cover two winter periods and include the major stratospheric warmings of 1980 and 1981; the results obtained by lidar are compared with global stratospheric data obtained by the radiosonde network and from the SSU satellite experiment. It is shown how the extension of the measurements into the mesosphere (and simultaneously in the stratosphere) and the height resolution achievable with the lidar technique permits one to estimate the time-delay of the downward propagation of a warming from the mesosphere to the low stratosphere in about 20 days. The influence of planetary wave propagation is also shown to produce a periodic variation in the stratopause height even in the absence of the stratospheric warming reported by the STRATALERT messages.  相似文献

Water vapor and ozone concentrations measured at mid and high latitudes above Europe during the MAP/WINE Campaign in the winter 1983/1984 are presented. Both water vapor and ozone distributions are found to be variable and structured. On two occasions strong enhancements of mesospheric ozone were recorded, which were probably caused by dynamic effects. The assumption of a photochemical equilibrium for ozone at high latitudes in winter does not appear justified according to the variations measured during MAP/WINE. Water vapor mixing ratios determined in the stratosphere and mesosphere above Scandinavia yield average mixing ratios of near 4 ppmv.  相似文献

We have simultaneously observed wind motions in the altitude range of 5–90 km by means of the MU radar, rocketsondes and radiosondes. Dominant vertical scales of wind fluctuations due to gravity waves were 2–5 km in the lower stratosphere, about 5–15 km in the upper stratosphere and longer than 15 km in the mesosphere. The increase in the vertical scale with altitude is interpreted in terms of the saturation of upward propagating gravity waves. In the stratosphere, the observed vertical wavenumber spectra showed smaller amplitudes and more gradual slopes than the model values. Furthermore, the wind velocity variance in the stratosphere increases exponentially with an e-folding height of about 9 km, implying that the gravity waves were not fully saturated. On the other hand, the spectra in the upper stratosphere and mesosphere agreed fairly well with the model spectra. The variance in the mesosphere seems to cease increase of the wave amplitudes and agrees reasonably well with the model value.  相似文献

The middle and upper atmosphere and the ionosphere at high latitudes are studied with the EISCAT incoherent scatter radars in northern Scandinavia. We describe here the investigations of the lower thermosphere and the E-region, and the mesosphere and the D-region. In the auroral zone both these altitude regions are influenced by magnetospheric processes, such as charged particle precipitation and electric fields, which are measured with the incoherent scatter technique. Electron density, neutral density, temperature and composition are determined from the EISCAT data. By measuring the ion drifts, electric fields, mean winds, tides and gravity waves are deduced. Sporadic E-layers and their relation to gravity waves, electric fields and sudden sodium layers are also investigated with EISCAT. In the mesosphere coherent scatter occurs from unique ionization irregularities. This scatter causes the polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSE), which are examined in detail with the EISCAT radars. We describe the dynamics of the PMSE, as well as the combination with aeronomical processes, which could give rise to the irregularities. We finally outline the future direction which is to construct the EISCAT Svalbard Radar for studying the ionosphere and the upper, middle and lower atmosphere in the polar cap region.  相似文献

A survey is presented of recent developments in the observation of wind and turbulence in the stratosphere and mesosphere using MST radars. One of the highlights of these developments is the growing recognition that the MST/ST radar is a valuable tool for routine monitoring of the atmospheric wind field. Furthermore, preliminary observations have shown the feasibility of monitoring atmospheric turbulence as well. Recent observations of mesospheric turbulence support theoretical models that emphasize the role of propagating waves in coupling the lower and middle atmospheres. Scientific groups in several countries are now planning or constructing MST radars so that within a few years observations should be available from diverse geographical locations spanning the globe.  相似文献

The results of statistical analyses of more than 7000 rocket and radiosonde sounding from five stations between 1964 and 1990 are presented. With the help of special statistical analysis, their regular periodic components and trends between 5 and 75 km are estimated. The main conclusion is that the stratosphere and mesosphere become cooler from 1964 to 1990. The rate of cooling in the mesosphere is about 0.3–1.0 K/yr. According to radiosonde data, there is a positive temperature trend in the lower stratosphere and troposphere of about 0.1–0.2 K/yr at middle and low latitudes.  相似文献

Following the passage of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act, which partially legalised homosexuality in England and Wales, the campaign for equal rights gained organisational strength across the country, with branches of the Gay Liberation Front and the Campaign for Homosexual Equality being formed in major cities and university towns. This coincided with a decade of radicalism, particularly in the coalfields, where education programmes and a renewed belief in the validity of class action provided the organisational and ideological basis for left campaigns. These two movements coalesced in the 1984–1985 miners’ strike, when an alliance was struck between the mining communities of South Wales and the London-based Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners support group. This alliance would prove the most remarkable of all the support groups set-up during the 1984–1985 miners’ strike, and a turning point in the integration of equal rights for gay and lesbian people into the campaigns of the labour movement.  相似文献

A simple model is outlined to describe electron precipitation from the population of charged particles trapped in the Earth's magnetic field; almost all of the precipitation is shown to occur in the region of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA). When the effect of a dawn-to-dusk electric field across the magnetosphere is included in the model, a diurnal modulation of the precipitated electron flux is predicted. Experimental evidence which supports the diurnal modulation model is described; the measurements which are discussed are principally those from University of Houston rocket payloads flown in the region dominated by the SAA. The resulting diurnal variation in atmospheric conductivity in the SAA is shown to be such that it could account for part of the daily UT variation in the geoelectric field. The observed seasonal variation in the pattern of geoelectric field modulation is also shown to be consistent with the proposed source of the daily variation. The difficulty of altering global conductivity by intense ionization of the mesosphere is discussed and the point is made that further in situ investigation of the Antarctic mesosphere is needed.  相似文献

Monthly simulations of the solar semidiurnal tide in the 80–100 km height regime are presented. These calculations benefit from the recent heating rates provided by Groves G. V. (1982a,b) (J. atmos. terr. Phys. 44, 111; 44, 281), the zonally-averaged wind, temperature and pressure fields developed for the new COSPAR international reference atmosphere [Labitzke K., Barnett J. J. and Edwards B. (1985) Handbook for MAP 16, 318], and eddy diffusivities determined from gravity wave saturation climatologies and used by Garcia R. R. and Solomon S. (1985) (J. geophys. Res. 90, 3850) to simulate oxygen photochemistry and transport in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. Some of the main characteristics of the observed semidiurnal tide at middle and high latitudes are reproduced in our simulations: larger amplitudes in winter months than in summer months, and the bi-modal behavior of the phase with summer-like and winter-like months separated by a quick transition around the two equinoxes. The phase transition is also more rapid in the spring, consistent with observations. The wavelengths are also longer in summer than in winter, at least below 95 km (whereas in July and August the simulations exhibit some discrepancies above this altitude), similar to the observational data. Semidiurnal amplitudes are generally smaller and the phases more seasonally symmetric at middle and low latitudes, as compared with the tidal structures above about 50° latitude. In addition, hemispheric differences in the mean zonal wind result in marked asymmetries in tidal behavior between the Arctic and Antarctic regions, and suggest that a comparative study of tide, gravity wave and mean flow interactions in the Arctic and Antarctic mesosphere and lower thermosphere would be fruitful.  相似文献

Observations of the mean wind flow and wave motions in the stratosphere at the South Pole are presented. The atmospheric motions are determined from the tracking of a high altitude, zero-pressure balloon launched from Amundsen-Scott Station during the austral summer of 1985–1986. The balloon position was precisely monitored by an optical theodolite for a large portion of the flight so that small scale motions could be resolved. The mean flow above the pole was approximately 3ms−1. Atmospheric motions characteristic of internal gravity waves were observed with an intrinsic period of approximately 4.5 h and vertical and horizontal wavelengths of approximately 2.5km and 125km, respectively. The horizontal perturbation velocity of the observed waves was large compared to the mean horizontal flow velocity. The implication is that wave motions play a dominant role in the transport of stratospheric constituents in regions where the mean winds are light, such as over the South Pole during austral summer.  相似文献
