Analysis of 6 months of ground-based ionosonde data from mid/high-latitude Digisonde stations at Millstone Hill, Argentina and Goose Bay, shows the relation between the formation of the mid-latitude trough in the dusk sector and the measured F-region drift velocities. The observed westward drift velocities in the trough are comparable in magnitude with the velocity of the Earth's rotation as required by the stagnation theory of trough formation. Using the Digisonde database of 15 min samples of electron density profiles and F-region drifts, a new trough detection algorithm automatically identifies the occurrence of the trough at any of the three stations. Correlating trough occurrence with the measured drift velocities indicates that troughs develop due to an increase in the horizontal westward velocity component. The extent of the trough formation relates to the magnitude of the horizontal velocity.  相似文献

lonograms recorded over limited frequency and height ranges have been used to reveal systematic structures on both main and range spread traces for a mid-latitude region. This fine structure has apparently not been reported previously. When disturbances are present ionogram traces are often made up of quasi-horizontal segments, suggesting that the F2-layer consists of stratified regions spaced a few kilometres apart vertically. It is proposed that if in fact stratifications are present, they may be produced by instabilities created by the presence of internal gravity waves. Interference effects on ionogram traces are also reported. These are shown to result from the presence of overlapping traces. The existence of these quasi-horizontal trace segments and interference effects is shown to contribute to the diffuseness of a range spread mid-latitude ionogram. Thus a mid-latitude range spread ionogram often appears diffuse even though the spread may consist primarily of a number of duplicate traces produced by specular reflections from a range of off-vertical angles.  相似文献

Experimental observations and theoretical modelling of the terrestrial mid-latitude trough are reviewed. The mid-latitude trough is considered as an F-layer phenomenon, and its relationships to the lightion trough in the topside ionosphere and to the plasmapause are discussed. The observed morphology of the mid-latitude trough is summarised. Recent evidence on plasma temperatures in the trough is examined. The physical processes that may be important in the trough region are listed. Large-scale computational models that include some of those processes are described and the results compared with observations. Deficiencies in the models and possible future developments are mentioned.  相似文献

Scintillation data from near Boston, U.S.A., and spread-F data from Argentine Islands, Antarctica are used to investigate the diurnal and seasonal variations of the simultaneous occurrence of medium-scale (~ 1–10 km) irregularities in the electron concentration in the F-region of the ionosphere at conjugate magnetic mid-latitude regions. It is found that these two stations near 52° CGL observe similar irregularity occurrence on ~75% of occasions at night when the data are considered on an hour by hour basis. During solstices, the relationship is dominated by occasions when irregularities are absent from both ends of the geomagnetic field lines; however, at equinoxes, periods of the simultaneous occurrence and non-occurrence of irregularities are approximately equally frequent. During periods of high geomagnetic activity, processes associated with the convection electric field and particle precipitation are likely to be important for the formation and transport of irregularities over these higher mid-latitude observatories. These processes are likely to occur simultaneously in conjugate regions. On days following geomagnetic activity, two processes may be operating that enhance the probability of the temperature-gradient instability, and hence lead to the formation of irregularities. These are the presence of stable auroral red arcs which occur simultaneously in conjugate locations, and the negative F-region storm effects whereby latitudinal plasma concentration gradients are increased; these effects are only similar in conjugate regions. During very quiet geomagnetic periods, F-region irregularities are occasionally observed, but seldom simultaneously at the two ends of the field lines. There is also an anomalous peak in the occurrence of irregularities over Argentine Islands associated with local sunrise in winter. No explanation is offered for these observations. Photo-electrons from the conjugate hemisphere appear to have no effect on irregularity occurrence.  相似文献

A summer, dayside, mid-latitude trough detected by a digital ionosonde located at Halley (76°S, 27°W, L = 4.2) is described. The trough is found to be present in the F2-region only and its movements are found to conform to known trough dynamics. The F1-layer shows a greater degree of development within the trough; slant type sporadic E reflections are present underneath the trough minimum. Satellite data from the northern hemisphere show a conjugate trough, with rapid ion flow occurring within it. Possible formation processes for the trough are examined. It is unlikely that depleted nightside plasma could have contributed to the trough. The trough is formed by the effect of enhanced F2 recombination rates combined with a differing solar production term for the plasma associated with the trough minimum and equatorial edge.  相似文献

In order to investigate the particles which produce the polar cap aurora at the Vostok station in Antarctica, charged particle data obtained by the DMSP satellites for some days in a period from April to August 1985 were surveyed. Due to the satellite orbit the local time range in which the data were available was the morning sector. For all the events when sun-aligned arcs were observed on the ground the simultaneous DMSP measurements on almost the same field line showed an increased integral number flux J. > 108 (cm8/s/sr)−1 of the precipitating electrons with energy Ee > 200 eV. The electron spectra with double peaks are typical of intense electron precipitation in the polar cap arcs. The most noticeable feature of ion spectra in the polar cap arcs is the prominent minimum in ion flux in the energy range 0.1 < Ei < 1 keV in contrast with the oval precipitation ; this feature gives the possibility to separate the polar arcs from the aurora in the oval. In some events the satellite crossed the system of two widely separated arcs ; one of them was a sun-aligned arc whereas the other was circular at constant latitude according to the Vostok data. The analysis of the DMSP electron and ion precipitation data has shown that in these events the latitude-oriented arcs are located in the polar cap and not in the auroral oval.  相似文献

A survey of stratospheric and mesospheric temperature was performed on a regular basis during winter conditions from the lidar station of the Observatory of Haute Provence (44°N, 6°E). The method uses the range resolved Rayleigh scattering of a laser beam and its latest performances are given. The data presented in this paper cover two winter periods and include the major stratospheric warmings of 1980 and 1981; the results obtained by lidar are compared with global stratospheric data obtained by the radiosonde network and from the SSU satellite experiment. It is shown how the extension of the measurements into the mesosphere (and simultaneously in the stratosphere) and the height resolution achievable with the lidar technique permits one to estimate the time-delay of the downward propagation of a warming from the mesosphere to the low stratosphere in about 20 days. The influence of planetary wave propagation is also shown to produce a periodic variation in the stratopause height even in the absence of the stratospheric warming reported by the STRATALERT messages.  相似文献

The electron density data returned by the polar orbiting satellites Ariel 3 and Ariel 4 revealed that the mid-latitude trough is one of the distinct large-scale features of the ionosphere at about 550 km. Recent work (e.g. Tulunay and Grebowsky, 1975) on the data included the investigation of the temporal development of the latitudinal position of the mid-latitude electron density trough at dawn and dusk during the large magnetic storms of May 1967 and May 1972. Model calculations which assumed that the equatorial convection E-field varies in step with the Kp index reproduced on the average the observed behaviour. In the present paper, trough observations made at noon and midnight during the period, 12–21 December 1971 which encompassed a relatively large magnetic storm have been discussed. In this context, model calculations have been employed as a guide of average approximations of the actual situation in predicting the plasmapause location. It is also shown that the trough observed on the noon passes is not generally plasmapause related as we expect the nightside troughs to be.  相似文献

The Bribie Island HF radar array (27°S, 153° E) can be set up to make angle of arrival and Doppler shift measurements throughout the range of spread-Es, layers. Results of this experiment show that the range spread seen on ionograms is not due to multiple reflection with varying obliquity, but rather a genuine height spread exists. Where velocity measurements can be reliably made, reflector velocity appears to be a slowly varying function of height. Spread-Es, can be blanketing or non-blanketing, sequential or non-sequential and at first impression it seems that the chief difference between spread-Es, and normal Es, is a small scale, partially transparent structure in lower regions that allows higher regions to be observed. It is suggested that on occasion spread-Es, irregularities are further modulated by the passage of gravity waves.  相似文献

The papers by Winseret al. [(1990) J. atmos. terr. Phys.52, 501] and Häggström and Collis [(1990) J. atmos. terr. Phys.52, 519] used plasma flows and ion temperatures, as measured by the EISCAT tristatic incoherent scatter radar, to investigate changes in the ion composition of the ionospheric F-layer at high latitudes, in response to increases in the speed of plasma convection. These studies reported that the ion composition rapidly changed from mainly O+ to almost completely (>90%) molecular ions, following rapid increases in ion drift speed by >1 km s−1. These changes appeared inconsisent with theoretical considerations of the ion chemistry, which could not account for the large fractions of molecular ions inferred from the obsevations. In this paper, we discuss two causes of this discrepancy. First, we reevaluate the theoretical calculations for chemical equilibrium and show that, if we correct the derived temperatures for the effect of the molecular ions, and if we employ more realistic dependences of the reaction rates on the ion temperature, the composition changes derived for the faster convection speeds can be explained. For the Winser et al. observations with the radar beam at an aspect angle of ϕ = 54.7° to the geomagnetic field, we now compute a change to 89% molecular ions in < 2 min, in response to the 3 km s−1 drift. This is broadly consistent with the observations. But for the two cases considered by Häggström and Collis, looking along the field line (ϕ = 0°), we compute the proportion of molecular ions to be only 4 and 16% for the observed plasma drifts of 1.2 and 1.6 km s−1, respectively. These computed proportions are much smaller than those derived experimentally (70 and 90%). We attribute the differences to the effects of non-Maxwellian, anisotropic ion velocity distribution functions. We also discuss the effect of ion composition changes on the various radar observations that report anisotropies of ion temperature.  相似文献

It is possible to form images of the tropical F-region ionization structures, variously labelled as ‘bubbles’, ‘plumes’, or ‘depletions’, in a plane perpendicular to the magnetic field by observing the airglow emissions associated with them in a field aligned direction. Structures which are present at altitudes from 250 km to more than 700 km above the dip equator map down to the 250–350 km region, where recombination and associated airglow emissions occur, ranging from the equator to dip latitudes of 15° or more. The structures can be viewed in a field aligned direction from sites in the range 17°–23° dip latitude. Measurements with high angular resolution (as small as 0.1° in the meridian) could show structures as small as 2 km. It is possible to make simultaneous measurements in both 6300 and 7774 Å recombination emissions, from which the height hmax of the peak plasma concentration n(e)max on the field line can be estimated from a ratio of the emission rates. It is possible to make maps of n(e)max and hmax either by raster scanning the sky in the two emissions or by imaging them onto an imaging detector. Useful data can be obtained from one site over a range of 20° in dip latitude and 10° in dip longitude. Observations in the same magnetic meridian as a backscatter radar system are desirable, as also are observations from near magnetic conjugate points. Imaging characteristics for the observation sites in the range of dip latitude 17°–23° have been calculated.  相似文献

Whistler-mode signals observed at Faraday, Antarctica (65° S, 64° W, Λ=50.8°) show anomalous changes in group delay and Doppler shift with time during the main phase of intense geomagnetic activity. These changes are interpreted as the effect of refracting signals into and out of ducts near L=2.5 by electron concentration gradients associated with edges of the mid-latitude ionospheric trough. The refraction region is observed to propagate equatorwards at velocities in the range 20–85 ms−1 during periods of high geomagnetic activity (Kp ≥ 5), which is in good agreement with typical trough velocities. Model estimates of the time that the trough edges come into view from Faraday show a good correlation with the observed start times of the anomalous features. Whistler-mode signals observed at Dunedin, New Zealand (46° S, 171° E, Λ=52.5°) that have propagated at an average L-shell of 2.2 (Λ=47.6°) do not show such trough-related changes in group delay. These observations are consistent with a lower occurrence of the trough at lower invariant latitudes.  相似文献

A model of the O+ and H+ distributions in the plasmasphere and high-latitude ionosphere is described and first results are presented. The O+ and H+ continuity and momentum equations are solved from the F-region to the equatorial plane in the inner plasmasphere, and to an altitude of 1400 km in the outer plasmasphere and high-latitude ionosphere. Account is taken of high-latitude convection, departure from corotation inside the plasmasphere, and neutral air winds. The neutral air winds are consistent with the assumed convection pattern. For equinox and magnetically quiet conditions the calculations show that a mid-latitude trough in F-layer electron concentration is present from 1600 to 0600 LT and the trough may occur either inside or outside the plasmasphere. The movement of the trough in this period is from higher to lower latitudes and is in qualitative agreement with AE-C and ESRO-4 data. A light-ion trough feature is apparent in the H+ distribution in the topside ionosphere at all local times. During the day the upward H+ flow increases with latitude to produce the light-ion trough. At night the H+ trough may be directly produced by the occurrence of the mid-latitude O+ trough. The relationships between the position of the plasmapause and the trough are discussed. Also discussed are the influence of particle ionization in the auroral zone and the effect of the neutral air wind.  相似文献

Electron density profiles, 70–110 km, for almost identical solar zenith angles over Central Europe and over Ahmedabad (India) are compared, avoiding seasonal ‘anomalies’. Low- and mid-latitude profiles agree very well in their structural features, the maximum deviation in magnitude being by a factor of 2 (around 90 km).  相似文献

The pulse-to-pulse beam steerability of the M U radar of Kyoto University enables us to observe multiple beam positions simultaneously. Based on 560 h of this type of data, we present two typical patterns of mid-latitude ionospheric disturbances and their horizontal traveling characteristics. Wavy structures have not been found in large-scale disturbances. Isolated disturbances travel primarily southward (equatorward) in disturbed conditions, while no preferred direction is observed in quiet conditions.  相似文献

Plasma flow vectors have been derived from data recorded by the Advanced Ionospheric Sounder (operating as a Dynasonde) at Halley, Antarctica (76°, 27°W). Single bulk flow vectors derived from the motion of echo reflection surfaces in the overhead F-region ionosphere are consistent both with plasma flow vectors, poleward of Halley, observed simultaneously by the PACE HF radar and also, for various levels of geomagnetic activity, with published mean plasma flow at the same invariant geomagnetic latitude (62°). The results demonstrate application of the method and lend support to existing evidence that the velocity measured by this kind of technique, at least for moderate to active geomagnetic activity at high latitudes, represents ionospheric plasma flow.  相似文献

A procedure is established to evaluate the Balmer excitation rates of Hα and Hβ to produce the corresponding volume emission rates versus height, using semi-empirical range relations of protons in air. The calculations are carried out with identified ion-energy particle spectra of the dayside aurora obtained by low altitude satellites. The calculated emission intensities of Hα and Hβ indicate that they are indeed observable by ground-based optical detection. Measurements of the dayside aurora from Nordlysstasjonen in Adventdalen, Svalbard, are discussed in relation to these calculations. Periodic bursts of auroral Hα and Hβ emissions are observed in the dayside aurora by ground-based photometers and spectrometers. The mean period between proton events is found to be 10 min on average. Furthermore, it is found that when the time between successive bursts decreases, the emission ratio of Hα and Hβ fluctuates indicating a step-like behaviour in the primary initial proton energy.  相似文献

During the period July–August 1991, observations were made of Polar Mesospheric Summer Echoes (PMSE) at 46.9 MHz and 224 MHz by the CUPRI and EISCAT radars, respectively, at two sites in northern Scandinavia. Those observations are compared here with observations of noctilucent clouds, energetic particle precipitation and magnetic disturbances. The appearance and morphology of PMSE are found to be closely correlated at the two frequencies and the two sites, 200 km apart. No correlation is found between PMSE and noctilucent clouds or magnetic disturbance. No correlation is found between energetic particle precipitation and the appearance of PMSE at 46.9 MHz for the whole time period. At 224 MHz, there is no evidence for a correlation before the beginning of August and only one event suggesting a possible correlation after the beginning of August. A minimum in occurrence frequency for PMSE is found between 16 and 21 UT (17–22 LST) which may be related to an expected minimum in background wind strength in that time interval.  相似文献

The results of the Intercosmos-19 satellite experiment which receives VLF signals arriving via a magnetospheric path have been examined. The reception zone in the magnetically conjugate region (MCR) has been shown to be centred near the L-value (2.6) of the transmitter of 15 kHZ radio waves. The received signals arrive at the MCR with wave normal angles to the geomagnetic field, ψ, far from the resonance cone. These results indicate an effective amplification of the signal in the magnetosphere by 10–15 dB and effective ducting of VLF waves across the equatorial plane of the magnetosphere.  相似文献
