T he employment prospects for graduates in different disciplines have recently been the focus of attention for many pessimists.1 Surveys relating to this problem have been made in a number of countries over the past few years.2 In Canada, the Canadian Association of Geographers established a Careers Committee in 1970, under the chairmanship of Professor R. ABSTRACT. We propose a mixed fixed and random coefficients framework for regional modeling. The framework allows the presence of both the region-specific effects and commonality of responses across regions. Bayes solutions for estimating parameters of interest and for generating predictions are derived. Within a Bayesian framework a predictive density approach to evaluate the impact of changes is suggested. We apply the methodology to evaluate the impact of new rate structures on Ontario regional demand for electricity.  相似文献

S ince the early 1950s there have been numerous studies which have attempted to determine the hierarchical structure of urban-place systems. Although Harris and Ullman identified three general city-forming functions, namely central place, transportation, and specialized, most urban-place system studies since have been based on a measure of the central-place function. Pred emphasizes the problem in his recent work, City Systems in Advanced Economies. He used the term "city systems" because his study is of the complete system and not just the central-place portion of the system. I chose for this study the term "urban-place system" for the same reason, but used "urban-place" rather than "city" because the system contains towns, villages, and hamlets as well as cities.  相似文献

Franco-Ontarian language rights have been granted through a policy of gradualism over the past 25 years. It will be argued that this policy has embraced a territorial component for selected domains - education, the judiciary, and government services - a fact that has helped to minimize backlash from the majority and aided the processes of extending language rights from the local level to the entire province. This has been accomplished in education and the judiciary and appears to be in progress for government services. It is through an analysis of territoriality that the significance of these processes to substate nationalism is revealed.
Durant les 25 dernières années, les Franco-Ontariens ont été soumis à une politique d'après laquelle ils ont obtenu peu à peu leurs droits linguistiques. Cette politique, qui touche à l'education, aux tribunaux et aux services gouvernementaux, a une composante spatiale qui a aidéà minimiser les réactions de la majorité, tout en étendant les droits linguistiques du niveau local à la province entière. Les droits linguistiques ont été obtenus dans les domaines de lÉducation et des tribunaux, et il paraît que les mêmes droits seront acquis dans la domaine des services gouvernementaux. C'est par le biais d'une analyse territoriale, que se révèle la signification de ces processus, au niveau provincial.  相似文献

Within the Official Languages Act of Canada, 1969, a territorial concept was incorporated to facilitate the extension of federal services in English and French and attend the spirit and purpose of the act. This was to be accomplished through the designation of bilingual districts. In spite of the recommendations of two commissions, however, no districts have been designated in Canada. Elements that have tended to prevent the application of this concept are therefore analysed, and an alternative form of application to accommodate the act is suggested.
Lorsque l'Acte des Langues officielles du Canada fut formulé (1969), il y avait considérablement de confiance dans le concept du territoire bilingue, ce qui devait faciliter l'accroissement de service fédéral en anglais et en français. II était anticipé que l'essence ou l'esprit de l'acte serait réalisé par la désignation des districts bilingues. En dépit des recommendations de deux commissions aucun district n'a été designé. L'objet de la présente communication est d'analiser les éléments qui ont eu tendance à empêcher l'application du concept de tels districts et de suggérer une autre forme d'application de l'acte.  相似文献
