A cross-staff from the wreck of the Kronan (1676)

The article deals with a cross-staff discovered inside a wooden chest on the wreck site of the man-of-war Kronan (1676), located off the east coast of the island of Öland in the Baltic Sea. It is dated 166[1], and besides now being the earliest known complete cross-staff, it is in several respects unique. A theory that the cross-staff from Kronan , due to its rough graduation and somewhat antiquated design, was used mainly for symbolic reasons, widens the fields of research and interpretation of the material culture.     

An Armada wreck on Fair Isle

Colin Martin has been associated with the excavation of Armada ships for four years. In 1968–9 he took part in Sydney Wignall's Spanish Armada Expedition as archaeologist and deputy leader and since 1968 has carried out research into the Armada campaign, particularly in the fields of ship construction and gunnery. In 1971, he worked as archaeologist and project co-ordinator on the wreck of La Trinidad Valencera in Donegal; and during the same year he became Director of the Maritime Archaeological Institute which has been set up in association with St. Andrew's University .     

Preliminary assessment of a wreck in the Red River, Choctaw County, Oklahoma, USA

This paper reports the initial recording of an early riverboat wreck located in the Red River between Oklahoma and Texas. The wreck is probably the Caddo lost in 1842. The visible wreckage is described and the history of the Caddo is discussed. This is the earliest western rivers steamboat investigated by archaeologists to date.
