Experimental data on round-the-world HF radio signals near the terminator are given. The critical frequency of the ionospheric waveguide is found to be Fc ∼ 16–17 MHz. At frequencies F < Fc the group delay has a negative dispersion τdotg = ∂τ/∂F ⋍ −100 μs/MHz and τdotg ⋍ 80 μs/MHz for frequencies f > fc. Ray-tracing calculations are carried out. It is found that the low frequency branch of round-the-world signals (F < Fc) is formed mainly by waveguide modes and the high frequency branch (F > Fc) by 0 ricochet and hop modes.Experiments on waveguide modes escaping from the ionospheric channel due to field-aligned scattering by artificial ionospheric turbulence are carried out. The conditions for trapping of radio waves in the ionospheric waveguide are investigated. It is shown that if the gradient of the critical frequency F0F2 is less than minus 2 × 10−2 MHz/100 km radio wave trapping takes place in the ionospheric waveguide at frequencies exceeding by 1–2 MHz the maximum observed frequency of the hop mode. The frequency time characteristics of the mode and the geophysical conditions for the effective control of radio waves escaping from the waveguide are defined.

An ecological model is proposed for human responses to climatic seasonality in the later Holocene of the southwestern Cape in South Africa. This is an area where pronounced seasonality produces cyclical effects on plant, animal and human communities. The predictions of this model are that: 1. human foragers would switch from plant carbohydrates to seal fat as a winter energy source; 2. capture and butchery of seals would vary with season and seal age; 3. capture and butchery of ungulates would vary seasonally; and 4. seals would be exploited differently from ungulates throughout the year. The model is tested against faunal data from Smitswinkelbaai Cave.

New work at Kehf el Hammar Cave provides the first well-dated palaeoenvironmental sequence for the Late Upper Palaeolithic in this region of the northwest Maghreb. The archaeological layers are dated via a combination of AMS radiocarbon and luminescence dating methods. The sequence contains charcoal-rich occupation layers with faunal, human and lithic finds. Local vegetational patterns are reconstructed on the basis of preliminary analysis of the charcoal evidence. Using standard calibration curves the AMS radiocarbon dates are compared with proxy evidence for climatic change from sea core records in the Alborán Sea. These appear to show that the Late Upper Palaeolithic occupation of the region coincides closely with Heinrich Event 1, a period marked by intense aridification and dating to ca. 16,700–17,250 calendar years ago.

The STARE and SABRE auroral radars use double pulses to measure one value of the autocorrelation function (ACF) to obtain the Doppler velocity of the irregularities in the E-region auroral zone. If the pulse separation of each double pulse is τ, then the measured velocity tends towards the mean velocity VDP as τ → 0, and towards the velocity of the long-lived irregularities VLL as τ → ∞. A practical implementation using these results is presented, which allows measurement of these two physically important velocities from just four pulse spacings, rather than the 11 or 15 currently used to obtain the full velocity spectrum in the STARE and SABRE radars, and thus gains greater precision or better time resolution. The two line-of-sight velocities, VDP and VLL, are in general not equal, with VLL greater in magnitude than VDP (sometimes much greater). Comparison of VDP and VLL for the two STARE stations and one of the SABRE stations shows interesting differences, and a number of statistically significant features. VLL probably measures the velocity of primary irregularities whenever these exist with the appropriate k vector. Both velocities ought to be measured routinely, and also for comparison with other techniques.

This paper outlines the environmental history of the Tigrean Plateau (northern Ethiopia) during the Holocene, based on the available geomorphological, palynological, archaeological, and historical evidence. At present, it seems that (1) the plateau experienced a more humid climate with a denser vegetation cover during the Early Holocene; (2) Soil erosion due to clearing vegetation began in the Middle Holocene; (3) agricultural activity was intensified in the Late Holocene, as a consequence of the rise of a state; (4) demographic pressure increased from the early first millennium BC to the mid–first millennium AD, causing soil erosion; (5) environmental degradation and demographic decline occurred in the late first millennium AD; (6) the vegetation cover was regenerated in the early second millennium AD; and (7) progressive vegetation clearance started again in the second half of the second millennium AD.Cet article trace l'histoire ambiante du Plateau Tigréen dans l'Holocène en utilisant les données géomorphologiques, palynologiques, archéologiques et historiques.

This is the first attempt at synthesis of archaeological research conducted in Gabon between 1982 and 1988. Middle Stone Age, Late Stone Age, Neolithic, Early and Late Iron Age data are discussed in the context of earlier discoveries and of current research in Central Africa as a whole.Though the Middle Stone Age remains undated, its earliest component clearly preceded 40,000 bp. The Late Stone Age is datedca 9000–2500 bp, with an early Neolithic perhaps as old as 5000–3000 bp. A late Neolithic is firmly dated to 2600–2200 bp. Iron smelting is shown to have begunca 2500 bp in inland areas of Gabon andca 2000 bp near the coast.

The phase of the Omega HAIKU (Hawaii, U.S.A.) and REUNION (La Reunion) signals were measured at Inubo, Japan and onboard ship at Fremantle. Australia. Strong east–west non-reciprocities of the diurnal phase shift are obtained both on the low latitude and transequatorial paths, and it is found that the non-reciprocity on one path is in an opposite sense to the other. The diurnal phase shift, ϕDN for the west-to-east (WE) propagation is 7.8–8.7 µs Mm–1 at 13.6 kHz on the transequatorial and mid-latitude paths, indicating no significant latitude dependence of the phase velocity in WE propagation. On the other hand, ϕDN for the east-to-west (EW) propagation greatly depends on the geomagnetic latitude; at 13.6 kHz ϕDN = 11.3µs Mm–1 on the low latitude path and ϕDN = 50 µs Mm–1 on the transequatorial path, which are 40% greater and 35% less than ϕDN in WE propagation, respectively. The east-west non-reciprocities of ϕDN on the low latitude and transequatorial paths are interpreted in terms of a single mode propagation in the conventional anisotropic waveguide model with βD = 0.3 km–1, βN = 0.5 km–1 and hN–hD = 12.5 km. In particular, the anomalously small ϕDN on the EW transequatorial path is explained as due to the high phase velocity of the night-time first-order mode in the equatorial region within ±12° geomagnetic latitude.
