MEANING OF THE SOUND: MAGIC AND SUFI MYSTICISM IN THE PHONIC STRUCTURE OF THE MALAY CHARM AND CHANT

The poetics of oral Malay charms (incantations) is based on lexical repetitions and parallelisms intended to enhance their magic power. These poetical devices, in their turn, bring forth phonic repetitions of different kinds (alliterations, assonances, etc.), which make possible an increase in information conveyed by the incantation without diminishing its magical efficacy. One of the forms of such repetitions is the anagram, i.e. a device based on the division of the word-theme, for instance the name of the spirit invoked, into individual sounds or syllables and their reiteration in other words of the text. The article discusses the structure and meaning of anagrammatic sound organisation, its origin from the magic notion of the equivalency between the whole and its part, as well as the use of poetical devices of oral literature, and of the anagram in particular, in written Sufi works (Hikayat Si Burung Pingai, verses by Abd al-Jamal and Syair Perahu) which resort to the archaic poetics of the charm and chant, although reconsidering them from the new perspective.

<正>吉尼斯纪录者狄焕然挑战冰川悬崖跳水说起到镜泊湖旅游,吊水楼瀑布那是必须去的一个景点。而到吊水楼看瀑布,最大的亮点就是看东北汉子狄焕然在悬崖瀑布的跳水表演。2008年的秋天,我第一次来镜泊湖观赏狄焕然的悬崖瀑布跳水表演,便被这位东北汉子的勇气所感动了,后来又多停留了一天,再次欣赏了他在滚滚瀑布间飞身一跃的雄姿。值得一提的是,在我离开的第二天,狄焕然在央视《综艺大观》节目的见证下,通过吉尼斯世界纪录,成为世界悬崖跳水     

ROUTINE MAGIC,MUNDANE RITUAL: TOWARDS A UNIFIED NOTION OF DEPOSITIONAL PRACTICE

This article seeks to advance ongoing discussions within archaeology concerning the relationship between ritual and depositional practices. Previous researchers have argued that ‘structured’ or ‘placed’ deposits are the result of ritual activities, but also that in many societies the disposal of refuse is governed by social ‘rules’. Distinguishing ‘technical’ actions such as rubbish disposal from deliberately ‘placed’ deposits is extremely difficult, however, and reinforces modern dualistic thought. Instead, this article argues that there was a continuum of practices from formal and ritualized events through to small‐scale, informal acts undertaken on a routine basis, including everyday refuse discard. It also questions purely utilitarian interpretations of storage structures. Drawing on ethnographic and ethnohistorical examples, it explores case studies from the later prehistoric and Romano‐British periods of north central England, and concludes by proposing methodologies through which these practices can be explored more fully in the future.

THE TIME OF THE SELF AND THE TIME OF THE OTHER

What is time? This essay offers an attempt to think again about this oldest of philosophical questions by engaging David Hoy's recent book, The Time of Our Lives: A Critical History of Temporality, which proposes a “history of time‐consciousness” in twentieth‐century European philosophy. Hoy's book traces the turn‐of‐the‐century debate between Husserl and Bergson about the different senses of time across the various configurations of hermeneutics, deconstruction, poststructuralism, and feminist theory. For him, what is at stake in such a project is to distinguish between the scientific‐objective “time of the universe” and the phenomenology of human temporality, “the time of our lives.” Hoy's approach is to organize his book around the three tenses of time—past/present/future—and to view objective‐scientific time as derived from the more primordial forms of temporalizing lived experience that occur in our interpretation of time. In my reading of Hoy's work, I attempt to explore how “time” (lived, experiential, phenomenological) can be read not in terms of “consciousness” (Hoy's thematic), but in terms of the self's relationship with an Other. That is, my aim is less to establish a continental tradition about time‐consciousness, understood through the methods of genealogy, phenomenology, or critical theory, than it is to situate the problem of time in terms of an ethics of the Other. In simple terms, I read Hoy's project as too bound up with an egological interpretation of consciousness. By reflecting on time through the relationship to the Other rather than as a mode of the self's own “time‐consciousness,” I attempt to think through the ethical consequences for understanding temporality and its connection to justice.

THE RETURN OF THE SOCIAL

This article is concerned with the social exclusion agenda in contemporary French cultural policy, exploring the relevance of aspects of postcolonial theory to an understanding of that agenda. The tensions involved in recent attempts to evolve policies addressing interculturalism, integration and “emergent” cultures (such as hip‐hop) while also staying true to the French republican tradition of universalism are illuminated by France’s problematic relationship with its colonial past. They are also shown to be related to a wider movement of post‐industrial, postmodern experimentation with aesthetic forms, from video and computer art to street arts, free parties and electronic dance music.
