Considering the likely unfavorable behavior under seismic action of adobe construction, this article aims at providing a seismic fragility characterization of two adobe Portuguese traditional buildings, using numerical models calibrated over experimental results. The study of such two case-study buildings in the region of Aveiro contributes to the understanding of the seismic fragility of adobe construction in the region in general. The buildings were numerically modeled to estimate their structural behavior under seismic loading using adobe material properties that were calibrated based on the experimental results of a cyclic in-plane test of a full-scale double-Tshaped adobe wall. The method chosen to characterize adobe masonry and model its nonlinear behavior followed a total strain crack-based macro-modeling (TSCM) approach, whereas pushover analysis was carried out to reproduce the pseudo-static experimental test in order to enable a refined calibration of adobe masonry mechanical properties. Fragility functions were then derived, based on the above-mentioned numerical models, using nonlinear static analysis, bringing further insight on the seismic fragility of traditional Portuguese adobe construction.  相似文献

A simple variational formulation for contact dynamics is adopted to investigate the dynamic behavior of planar masonry block structures subjected to seismic events. The numerical model is a two-dimensional assemblage of rigid blocks interacting at potential contact points located at the vertices of the interfaces. A no-tension and associative frictional behavior with infinite compressive strength is considered for joints. The dynamic contact problem is formulated as a quadratic programming problem (QP) and an iterative procedure is implemented for time integration. Applications to analytical and numerical case studies are presented for validation. Comparisons with the experimental results of a masonry wall under free rocking motion and of a small scale panel with opening subjected to in-plane loads are also carried out to evaluate the accuracy and the computational efficiency of the formulation adopted.  相似文献

Shake table tests were carried out on a 7 m × 5 m three-story, timber light-frame building (7.5 m height) at the TreesLab laboratory (Eucentre) in Pavia. The aim of the research was to evaluate the seismic behavior of a typical Italian prefabricated timber building and to study the interaction between the individual structural components tested in quasi-static manner in a previous experimental study. The 1979 Montenegro Earthquake ground motion, recorded at the Ulcinj-Hotel Albatros station, was selected as the ground motion for seismic tests. The maximum peak ground acceleration was scaled to 0.07 g, 0.27 g, 0.5 g. 0.7 g, and 1 g in order to evaluate the building’s performance at different levels of seismic input. More than 100 instruments were used to monitor the behavior of the building during seismic tests measuring acceleration, displacement, and forces. The visual inspection shows that the building did not show any damage during all seismic tests. However the data analysis (dynamic identification, capacity spectrum, inter-story drift) confirm that during the 1.00 g test the structure went beyond its linear elastic limit. The results obtained from this experimental study suggest that the design hypotheses commonly adopted in practice for seismic analysis (e.g., in terms of force distributions between the walls, and also the behavior factor q) are not always consistent with the real behavior of timber frame multi-story buildings, and should be backed by more accurate knowledge of the contributions of the individual structural components.  相似文献

For the seismic isolation of light structures, the use of laminated rubber bearings is neither economical nor, for most cases, technically suited. For the isolation of this type of structure a new system, consisting of steel balls rolling on rubber tracks, has been developed at TARRC (Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre).

This article presents the results of experimental tests carried out for the characterization of the behavior of this new device. A numerical model is also proposed that can be used to assess the seismic response of structures with this isolation system.

Comparison of the predictions of the numerical model with the experimental data shows that the model is adequate to perform the correct assessment of the seismic response of isolated structures. The results of the experimental campaign of shaking-table tests, as well as the numerical simulations, show that there is an effective reduction of the acceleration levels induced in the isolated structures.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Although many experimental tests and numerical models are available in the literature, the numerical simulation of the seismic response of existing masonry buildings is still a challenging problem. While the nonlinear behavior of masonry structures is reasonably predictable when the out-of-plane behavior can be considered inhibited, when the in-plane and out-of-plane responses coexist and interact, simplified models seem unable to provide reliable numerical predictions. In this article, taking advantage of the experimental tests carried out in a shaking table on two masonry prototypes at LNEC, a macro-element approach is applied for the numerical simulations of their nonlinear response. The adopted approach allows simulating the nonlinear behavior of masonry structures considering the in-plane and out-of-plane responses. Since it is based on a simple mechanical scheme, explicitly oriented to representing the main failure mechanisms of masonry, its computational cost is greatly reduced with respect to rigorous solutions, namely nonlinear FEM approaches. Two modeling strategies are adopted, namely a regular mesh independent from the real texture of the prototypes and a detailed one coherent with the units disposal. The numerical results are discussed and the correlation between the nonlinear static analyses and the dynamic response is provided.  相似文献

In this article, experimental and finite element (FE) numerical investigations on interior wide-beam column joints are presented. The experimental research consisting of three full-scale interior wide-beam column specimens was carried out at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore to study the seismic behavior. Details of the test results are discussed to understand the specimens' seismic performance in terms of general behavior, hysteresis loops response, and strain profiles of longitudinal reinforcement. In the FE numerical study, the three-dimensional (3D) model developed is validated by comparing the analysis results with the experimental test results, which has shown a good agreement. A parametric study is performed to elucidate more information and to understand the influence of critical parameters affecting the joint behavior such as column axial load, beam anchorage ratio, and wide beam participation.  相似文献

This article investigates the seismic performance of one-story reinforced concrete structures for industrial buildings. To this aim, the seismic response of two structural prototypes, a cast-in-situ monolithic frame and a precast hinged frame, is compared for four different levels of translatory stiffness and seismic capacity. For these structures an incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed within a Monte Carlo probabilistic simulation. The results obtained from the probabilistic analysis prove that precast structures have the same seismic capacity of the corresponding cast-in-situ structures and confirm the overall goodness of the design criteria proposed by Eurocode 8, even if a noteworthy dependency of the actual structural behavior from the prescribed response spectrum is pointed out.

The experimental verification of these theoretical results is searched for by means of pseudodynamic tests on full-scale structures. The results of these tests confirm the overall equivalence of the seismic behavior of precast and cast-in-situ structures. Moreover, two additional prototypes have been designed to investigate the seismic behavior of precast structures with roof elements placed side by side. The results of these further tests show that an effective horizontal diaphragm action can be activated even if the roof elements are not connected among them, and confirm the expected good seismic performance of these precast systems. Finally, the results of the experimental tests are compared with those obtained from nonlinear structural analyses. The good agreement between numerical and experimental results confirms the accuracy of the theoretical model and, with it, the results of the probabilistic investigation.  相似文献

This article describes a simplified procedure for estimating the seismic sidesway collapse capacity of frame building structures incorporating linear viscous dampers. The proposed procedure is based on a robust database of seismic peak displacement responses of viscously damped nonlinear single-degree-of-freedom systems for various seismic intensities and uses nonlinear static (pushover) analysis without the need for nonlinear time history dynamic analysis. The proposed procedure is assessed by comparing its collapse capacity predictions on 272 different building models with those obtained from incremental dynamic analyses. A straightforward collapse capacity-based design procedure is also introduced for structures without extreme soft story irregularities.  相似文献

Because of the crucial role of free vibration frequency of a structure (e.g., a bridge) in design procedure, more realistic estimation of the frequency ends up in safer and more optimized design. As obtaining the free vibration frequencies of a bridge, considering soil-pile group-structure interaction, provide more realistic values, development of an analytical model to obtain such free vibration frequencies is studied in this research work. Most researchers have studied models with a single pile foundation. The purpose of this study is to assess soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects on dynamic performance of pile group supported bridges. A new analytical model is proposed to predict seismic analysis of these bridges. Applying the dynamic equations of motion for the system, SSI effects have been estimated. Based on the suggested analytical model, a new approximate equation is proposed for calculating natural frequency of pile group supported bridges. Equation accuracy has been investigated by comparing the results with those achieved by previous studies. Most periods calculated by the approximate equation are similar to those given for other case studies, indicating that the model could be applicable to other projects. Since the proposed model is very similar to real soil-pile-pier systems, this approximate equation can be used in preliminary seismic design of bridges.  相似文献

The horizontal response of structural and nonstructural systems during seismic events has been studied for a long time. However, the effect of the vertical response of floors on building contents and nonstructural systems has still remained a topic of concern. A wavelet de-noising method along with the experimental data obtained from a full-scale test at E-Defense is used to estimate the vertical floor displacement of a five-story steel moment frame building in base-isolated and fixed-base configurations. Vertical displacements of slabs and beams are calculated from the experimental data and formulated based on their out-of-plane dominant frequencies. A curve fitting approach is then carried out to estimate vertical displacements at floors and stories. In these tests, partition wall damage such as buckling of studs occurred at slab displacements of about 1 in.  相似文献

In the present study, numerical simulations are conducted to estimate the in-plane response of adobe walls subjected to pseudo-static cyclic loading based on the finite element code ABAQUS. The simplified micro-modeling approach is adopted and an interface model reported in ABAQUS material library is applied as material model for zero-thickness interface elements. The comparison between obtained results and field test data results in good agreement. Parametric studies are carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of independent parameters changes on response of adobe walls. It is noted that mechanical properties of joints and adobe units play an active role on in-plane behavior of walls. A tri-linear benchmark curve is proposed to predict the response of aforementioned walls. In this regard, a statistical study is performed to derive the predictive tri-linear benchmark curve. The regressive analysis on 59 numerical models resulted in proposing predictive models. Finally, by comparing tri-linear curves obtained from the regressive analysis, numerical analysis, and experimental study, appropriate accuracy of theoretical model can be found.  相似文献

This study is aimed at investigating the demand on shear panel dampers (SPDs) installed in steel structures under strong earthquake motions to serve as guidance for the recommended capacity of SPDs in seismic design. For this purpose, an extensive dynamic analysis is carried out on steel bridge pier structures with SPD devices. To describe the restoring force characteristics of SPDs, the analysis uses a newly developed combined hardening model based on experimental data. The seismic demands made on SPD devices are examined and then summarized to give recommended values for determining the necessary deformation capacity of SPDs.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The paper analyzes the static behavior and the seismic vulnerability of the “San Francesco ad Alto” building in Ancona (Italy), which is currently used as a Regional Headquarter of the Marche Region by the Italian Army and was formerly a monastery. The global static structural behavior and the dynamic properties have been evaluated using the Finite Element modeling technique, in which the nonlinear behavior of masonry has been taken into account by proper constitutive laws. The concepts of homogenized material and smeared cracking are used to evaluate the capacity of the monastery to withstand lateral loads together with the expected demands resulting from seismic actions (N2 method), using a nonlinear static analysis (pushover). The comparison of seismic demand and capacity confirms the susceptibility of these types of buildings to extensive damage and collapse, as frequently observed in similar buildings. This paper aims to point out that advanced numerical analyses can offer significant information on the understanding of the actual structural behavior of historical buildings. It is believed that the methodology and the overall conclusions of this case study are valid for many historical monasteries in Europe.  相似文献

Past earthquakes have demonstrated that historical vaulted adobe buildings are highly vulnerable to seismic actions. Hence, it is crucial for such building typologies to be evaluated in terms of seismic capacity. To this end, this article deals with the seismic performance of historical vaulted adobe houses from the city of Yazd, Iran as one of the seismically active areas of the world and possessing a very rich adobe heritage. Thus, and based on a detailed geometrical survey, a representative sample of adobe houses from Yazd was studied using a simplified in-plane analysis based on three geometric indexes. Concerning the out-of-plane behavior, a deeper assessment was conducted by performing a numerical study, where the main influential parameters on the seismic behavior of vaulted adobe buildings were considered. The numerical analyses were carried out by adopting the limit analysis theory implemented in the Block2D software. The results obtained indicate the safe in-plane behavior of most of the houses and the safe out-of-plane response of the sample under gravitational loads. However, the sample out-of-plane safety under earthquake-induced loads seems to be a matter of concern.  相似文献

The article presents seismic resistance evaluation study of unreinforced brick masonry buildings. The study was carried out as part of the Ph.D. research work of the first author. As part of the study, in addition to the standard laboratory tests, a dynamic field test was carried out on single-story, single-room unreinforced masonry structure. The model structure was tested in actual ground conditions against simulated earthquake vibrations produced through controlled explosions, especially designed for this purpose. Based on masonry properties accrued from lab and field tests, finite element models of the brickwork system were also studied. Finally, the software named, “Shear Damage Index (SDI),” developed as part of this study, was used to plot contours of shear demand (shear stress) to shear capacity (shear strength) ratio on the numerical model and hence to identify potential weak zones in the model for possible strengthening of those locations.  相似文献

The paper focuses on the seismic response of steel pin-jointed frames braced by lightweight cladding panels. In particular, with the aim to investigate the performance of such a structural scheme when acting as a dissipative system, a wide numerical study has been developed. It is based upon available shear tests on screwed sandwich panels, whose experimental cyclic responses are properly incorporated into a scope-oriented, computer program. The goal is firstly to check the possibility of using cladding panels as shear diaphragms in seismic areas and then to assess an appropriate design behaviour factor, accounting for their actual hysteretic response. Key findings from the nonlinear dynamic analyses are: (1) a portal frame steel building in a low-medium seismicity zone may be braced by common cladding panels, completely avoiding the use of other bracing systems; (2) this structural solution, if compared with a conventional one, appears to be more efficient and cost-effective, giving rise to a weight saving which, in the case under examination, reaches a value of about 20%; (3) on the basis of the numerical study a design behaviour factor q d =2 seems to be realistic for such a structural typology.  相似文献

This study examines the seismic behavior of the minaret of the well-known historical structure “Sultan Ahmed Mosque” under strong earthquake motion. Despite their slenderness and height, minarets are towers with well-established earthquake resistance. In general, these structures were constructed adjacent to the main structure and/or its components. Hence, it is expected that the dynamic behavior of the minarets is influenced by the dynamic characteristics of the adjacent structures as well as the contact conditions. In the presented study, the dynamic behavior of the M6 minaret of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, which is in contact with the portico that surrounds the courtyard of the mosque, is considered. Ambient vibration tests were conducted on site in order to identify the individual and coupled vibration modes of the minaret and the portico. A finite/discrete model was developed and seismic analysis was carried out. The comparative study reveals considerable differences in responses of different models under strong and very strong earthquake motion.  相似文献

The concept of base isolation is a century old, but application to civil engineering structures has only occurred over the last several decades. Application to light-frame wood buildings in North America has been virtually non existent with one notable exception. This article quantitatively examines issues associated with application of base isolation in light-frame wood building systems including: (1) constructability issues related to ensuring sufficient in-plane floor diaphragm stiffness to transfer shear from the superstructure to the isolation system; (2) evaluation of experimental seismic performance of a half-scale base-isolated light-frame wood building; and (3) development of a displacement–based seismic design method and numerical model and their comparison with experimental results. The results of the study demonstrate that friction pendulum system (FPS) bearings offer a technically viable passive seismic protection system for light-frame wood buildings in high seismic zones. Specifically, the amount and method of stiffening the floor diaphragm is not unreasonable, given that the inter-story drift and accelerations at the upper level of the tested building were very low, thus resulting in the expectation of virtually no structural, non structural, or contents damage in low-rise wood frame buildings. The nonlinear dynamic model was able to replicate both the isolation layer and superstructure movement with good accuracy. The displacement-based design method was proven to be a viable tool to estimate the inter-story drift of the superstructure. These tools further underscore the potential of applying base isolation systems for application to North America's largest building type.  相似文献

A full-scale shake table test is conducted to assess the seismic response characteristics of a 23 m high wind turbine. Details of the experimental setup and the recorded dynamic response are presented. Based on the test results, two calibrated beam-column finite element models are developed and their characteristics compared. The first model consists of a vertical column of elements with a lumped mass at the top that accounts for the nacelle and the rotor. Additional beam-column elements are included in the second model to explicitly represent the geometric configuration of the nacelle and the rotor. For the tested turbine, the experimental and numerical results show that the beam-column models provide useful insights. Using this approach, the effect of first-mode viscous damping on seismic response is studied, with observed experimental values in the range of 0.5–1.0% and widely varying literature counterparts of 0.5–5.0%. Depending on the employed base seismic excitation, damping may have a significant influence, reinforcing the importance of more accurate assessments of this parameter in future studies. The experimental and modeling results also support earlier observations related to the significance of higher modes, particularly for the current generation of taller turbines. Finally, based on the outcomes of this study, a number of additional experimental research directions are discussed.  相似文献

This article aims at presenting and discussing the strategies for updating the finite element numerical modeling of stone masonry arch bridges using operational modal analysis. The study comprehended three bridges: two old ones, the St. Lázaro and the Lagoncinha bridges, and a recently constructed bridge in Vila Fria, Portugal. Updating of the bridge models is performed by comparing the numerical and experimental modal parameters. Three-dimensional detailed numerical models are used to perform modal analysis of the bridges. Experimental modal identification of the bridges is based on the measurement of their acceleration responses during normal operation. The assigned material properties are also based on available results obtained from in situ and laboratory tests and on the results of visual inspection and historical research carried out for both old bridges.  相似文献
