Monetary losses induced by earthquakes in Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings are mainly due to damage to non-structural elements (infills, partitions, finishes, etc.). In this study, alternative retrofit strategies for reducing monetary losses in RC frame buildings are examined. They include local strengthening of infills (and partitions) and seismic isolation. The Expected Annual Loss (EAL) of a number of RC frame buildings, pre- and post-rehabilitation, is evaluated, following the time-based assessment approach proposed in the FEMA P-58 guidelines. The breakeven time of each retrofit intervention is then computed, considering the initial cost of the intervention and the expected benefit in terms of EAL reduction.  相似文献

The unique dynamic response of skewed bridges causes them to experience more noticeable damage compared to straight bridges during seismic events. The effectiveness of different retrofit strategies on the fragility of skewed bridges can change with the skew angle. This article assesses the impact of skew angle and various retrofit strategies on the fragility of multi span continuous concrete I-girder bridges. The results indicate that the level of effectiveness of a retrofit strategy is highly dependent on the skew angle and damage state of interest and an appropriate retrofit strategy should be chosen based on the vulnerability of the components.  相似文献

Over the past ten years, the development of analytical procedures to accurately evaluate the seismic performance of existing buildings has gathered the attention of researchers. This has resulted in the publication of several standards, which, however, inadequately cover the issue of retrofit strategy selection. In the present article, a procedure that allows a comparison of available strategies in order to select the optimum solution for an existing deficient building is proposed. The procedure is based on calculating the pushover curve for the unstrengthened structure. A capacity spectrum is then estimated assuming different retrofit scenarios, which is then used for the evaluation of the strategies. The latter is based on criteria that assess the main structural system characteristics and how each solution benefits them. The final step of the procedure introduces simplified rules that allow the approximate design of each retrofit solution, which allows the evaluation of their applicability. The proposed procedure was applied to two idealized buildings with different structural systems. Results obtained indicate that less effective or inapplicable rehabilitation strategies were properly detected. Thus, the results were considered acceptable in terms of identifying the possible optimum strategy, which, however, should be verified with a detailed design of the retrofit system.  相似文献

The unexpected damages in structures during severe earthquakes have been reported frequently so far. In this study, the damage-based inelastic behavior of special moment resisting frame (SMRF) structures designed according to the new versions of general earthquake loading codes (International building code [IBC] 2012 & American Society of Civil Engineers [ASCE] 7-2010) and seismic design references (National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program [NEHRP] 2009 & Federal Emergency Management Agency [FEMA] P-750) has been investigated. The final results presented based on distinctive shear and flexural failure modes show that a non-uniform distribution of severe damage in structural height occurs during design level seismic excitations. Also it is observed that the shear and flexural damages are more critical in short and tall MRF structures, respectively.  相似文献

This article presents a design methodology for seismic upgrading of existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. The methodology is based on the modification of the deflected shape of the structure so as to achieve a near-uniform distribution of interstorey drift along the building height, thereby eliminating damage localization. Yield Point Spectra are utilized for the definition of demand and a direct displacement-based design approach is implemented. The fundamental steps of the method are described in detail, including a systematic evaluation of assumptions and limitations. A full-scale tested structure is used as a case study for assessment and verification of the proposed methodology. Alternative retrofit scenarios are set according to target response and performance levels. The role of the target deflected response shape and its influence on the outcome of the retrofit strategy is investigated. The viability of the alternative retrofit scenarios is studied for different ground motions including near-fault earthquake records.  相似文献

In this article, seismic vulnerability assessment is carried-out on a novel hybrid structure (steel moment resisting frame (SMRF) and cross laminated timber (CLT) infill panels). For the seismicity of Vancouver, Canada, a three-bay, 3-, 6-, and 9-story height SMRFs are designed for two ductility levels (ductile and limited ductility). To study the seismic vulnerability CLT infilled building, parametric analysis was performed by varying infill configuration (bare frame, one-bay infilled, two-bay infilled, and fully infilled). The structure is modeled in OpenSees and nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed. Peak inter-story drift demand and corresponding FEMA performance limits (capacity) values are used to compute the corresponding fragility curves. From the analyses, it can be seen that as more bays are infilled, the fundamental period and seismic vulnerability is reduced significantly. The results highlight that, within the performance-based earthquake engineering, different objectives can be met with varying the CLT configuration.  相似文献

Trenchless technology is well accepted for repairing critical underground lifelines with minimal ground surface disruption. The cured in place pipeline (CIPP) lining process is an application of trenchless technology that involves the installation of fiber reinforced composites inside existing pipelines. The uncertain performance of pipelines reinforced with CIPP linings in seismic areas is a barrier to the adoption of this method for seismic retrofit. This article evaluates experimentally the transient seismic response of pressurized pipelines reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) linings. The test results show that reinforced pipelines can accommodate very high intensity ground motions and can provide substantial seismic strengthening in addition to efficient rehabilitation of aging underground infrastructure.  相似文献

When structural retrofitting of buildings is required due to seismic safety considerations, building owners or government officials are faced with a crucial decision whether to demolish and rebuild their buildings, or retrofit them. Simple decisions based on fixed proportions, such as demolish and rebuild if retrofit costs exceed 40% of the replacement cost, may be misleading. A financial analysis should be carried out considering all the revenues and costs of the building during its life time. A low-cost residential apartment building that has a construction cost of $140/m2 is selected in this study to represent the vulnerable buildings in developing countries under seismic risk. Life-cycle cost analysis approach is employed to value the rebuild or retrofit alternatives to compare economically. Economic assessment has been carried out for various parameters. It has been found that the age of the building and the retrofit ratio are dominant parameters among the others. The critical retrofit ratio (percent of retrofit cost to initial construction cost) varied from 25% for 40 year old buildings to 67% for 10 year old buildings. It is suggested that economical decisons should not be made simply by comparing the retrofit costs to initial construction costs.  相似文献

This article presents the results of a seismic risk assessment of the bridge network in Charleston, South Carolina and the surrounding counties to support emergency planning efforts, and for prioritization of bridge retrofit. This study includes an inventory analysis of the approximately 375 bridges in the Charleston area, and convolution of the seismic hazard with fragility curves analytically derived for classes of bridges common to this part of the country. State-of-the-art bridge fragility curves and replacement cost estimates based on region-specific data are used to obtain economic loss estimates. The distribution of potential bridge damage and economic losses are evaluated for several scenario events in order to aid in the identification of emergency routes and assess areas for investment in retrofit. This article also evaluates the effect of uncertainty on the resulting predicted economic losses. The findings reveal that while the risk assessment is very sensitive to both the assumed fragility curves and damage ratios, the estimate of total expected economic losses is more sensitive to the vast differences in damage ratio models considered.  相似文献

This article addresses the laboratory testing of a full-scale double-T shaped adobe wall, under in-plane horizontal cyclic loading of increasing amplitude, with the aim of contributing to the understanding of the seismic behavior of adobe structures. The wall was built with lime adobes taken from an existing building and mortar with a traditional composition. The behavior of the wall was assessed in terms of: shear stress versus horizontal drift and moment versus rotation relationships; maximum lateral strength; drift and rotation at peak stress; evolution of stiffness, lateral displacements, dissipated energy, and natural frequency; and damage pattern. The wall exhibited brittle behavior and in-plane strength corresponding to 56% of the vertical load. Cracking was observed with an X-shaped pattern whereas no sliding occurred at its base. This research supported the subsequent development of a repair and retrofit solution and also of numerical models to simulate the seismic behavior of two adobe buildings.  相似文献

Many existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures around the world have been designed to sustain gravity and wind loads only. Past earthquake reconnaissance showed that strong earthquakes can lead to substantial damage to non-seismically designed RC buildings, particularly to their beam-column joints. This paper presents a novel retrofit method using buckling-restrained haunches (BRHs) to improve the seismic performance of such joints. A numerical model for RC joints is introduced and validated. Subsequently, a new seismic retrofit strategy using BRHs is proposed, aimed at relocating plastic hinges and increasing energy dissipation. The results indicate the retrofit method can effectively meet the performance objectives.  相似文献

This article is the second of two companion articles that evaluate the seismic performance of steel moment-resisting frames with innovative beam-to-column connections that incorporate shape memory alloy (SMA) elements to enhance the energy dissipation characteristics of such frames. Building upon the finite element models of the three- and nine-story frames that were developed in the first article, the seismic demands on partially restrained frames with and without SMA elements are evaluated within a probabilistic framework. The results of this evaluation, expressed in the form of demand hazard curves, depict the effectiveness of the SMA connections in enhancing building performance over a range of demand levels. Martensitic SMA connections are most effective in controlling deformation demands on the frame from high levels of seismic intensity. In contrast, the recentering capability of superelastic SMA connections make them most suitable for reducing residual deformations in the structure, a reduction that is achieved at the expense of increased deformation demands during strong excitation. However, neither connection is uniformly beneficial at all hazard levels, suggesting that SMA systems must be tailored to the specific performance objectives for the building structural system.  相似文献

A five-storey steel frame incorporating dissipative knee elements is designed using the Eurocode 8 pushover analysis method. The non-linear analysis makes use of a novel knee element model capable of accurately simulating the bending and shear behaviour observed in full-scale tests. The performance of the structure is assessed using non-linear time-history analysis. This shows that the knee elements can be designed to yield under small earthquakes or early in a strong one (maximising their energy dissipation) while still being able to withstand a large event without collapse. Knee elements thus have the potential to give excellent seismic performance in steel framed structures. The time history analysis results are compared to those obtained with the three different pushover analysis methods (Eurocode 8, FEMA 356 and ATC 40). The FEMA 356 method, which includes a more accurate representation of the structure's significant post-yield stiffness, gave the closest agreement with the time history analyses, while the Eurocode 8 method gave rather conservative results and the ATC 40 method appears non-conservative for this type of structure.  相似文献

The Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi endured stronger earthquakes for centuries before 1997 earthquake, which generated the collapse of the two vaults. Experts blame as possible reasons of collapse the damage cumulated from previous earthquakes and/or the retrofitting made to the structure over its lifetime. This article presents the history of the retrofit interventions of the Basilica through the centuries, focusing mainly on the roof, which has been subjected to three major restorations through its life. It is shown using simple analytical models that the cumulative effects of the changes made to the roof of the Basilica affected the structure’s dynamic behavior in a negative manner, increasing the seismic loads on the existing structural members. In particular, the numerical results show that the 1958 roof intervention has stiffened the structure, redistributing the seismic loads on the façade and the transept. This overload might explain the collapse of the two Gothic vaults during 1997 earthquake.  相似文献

Comparative study of numerically and experimentally obtained seismic responses of un-reinforced masonry building supported on in-house designed un-bonded fibre reinforced elastomeric isolator (U-FREI) are presented in this article. The effectiveness of U-FREI is established very clearly in terms of controlled dynamic response of the model building. Experimental studies are carried out on a shake table with elaborate instrumentations for measurement of acceleration and displacements at different floor levels. Numerical study of the model building supported on U-FREI is carried out to compare the results with experimental investigation. Multi-linear pivot hysteretic plasticity model is used to simulate the behavior of FREI, while plate elements are used for brick-masonry walls. Experimentally obtained force-displacement curves of FREI are used for defining the properties of multi-linear model representing FREI. The dynamic responses obtained from the numerical studies are compared with those from experimental investigations. This study indicates that the seismic responses of building supported on U-FREI can be numerically evaluated with quite reasonable accuracy. A good numerical model can be judiciously used at the preliminary design stage, followed by actual testing and construction of the base isolated building.  相似文献

A framework for quick seismic assessment and retrofit of traditional unreinforced masonry (URM) structures is presented. The proposed methods build on simple principles of structural dynamics and are used as an alternative to detailed time-history analysis, in recognition of the prevailing need for simple and practical methods, compatible with the low-budget and the limited level of knowledge regarding materials, internal force paths, connectivity and condition of older URM structures. An objective is to identify areas in the building that are particularly susceptible to damage and for guiding the types of the required global interventions to improve seismic response. Demand and supply are expressed in terms of relative drift ratios that quantify the intensity of out-of-plane differential translation and in-plane shear distortion of masonry walls. A characteristic traditional building type of timber-laced masonry is used as a model structure for illustration of concepts. The morphology and geometry of the building correspond to a statistical sample of the actual traditional unreinforced masonry buildings (TURM) found in historical centers of many towns in the greater region of Northern Greece. The methodology is particularly useful for setting retrofit priorities and management of the collective seismic risk of historical entities.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The protection of cultural heritage against earthquake induced actions is one of the main challenges the earthquake engineering science and practice are facing. This article presents a seismic assessment study on one of the most ancient colonial buildings present in Peru, the Cathedral of Lima, focusing on its towers. A historical review highlighted how these structures, together with the whole Cathedral, suffered intense damage and partial collapse during previous earthquakes. In order to identify the structure main deficiencies, both linear kinematic analyses and nonlinear static analyses have been performed. Different nonlinear finite element models have been created to evaluate the influence of the adjacent walls. Different load distributions have been compared to evaluate how simplified patterns could provide results close to load distributions taken from a modal analysis of the complex. A simple retrofit strategy, consisting on the introduction of steel ties, has also been studied as a reference. Results show good correlation between kinematic and pushover analyses. The construction, when compared to the requirements of the national code for new buildings, results significantly vulnerable, pointing out the need to accept some structural damage even after seismic retrofit.  相似文献

The presented research focuses on large-scale seismic testing under multi-directional ground motion of a three-story high, wood-frame residential building representing late 1960's California construction. Earthquake lateral resistance is provided by plywood shear walls around the perimeter of the building with an open front in the first story for tuck-under parking. Accordingly, the as-built structural configuration is asymmetric in plan and discontinuous in elevation with tendency to twist about a vertical axis and to form a weak story mechanism. The test results confirm this tendency. They also reveal the sensitivity of the response to multi-direction ground motion. Asymmetric damage patterns are induced by the multi-component motions in the walls oriented perpendicular to the open front for the as-built test structure, with or without finish materials. However, the observed damage remained noncritical as far as structural integrity is concerned even for ground accelerations exceeding 120% of that recorded during Northridge earthquake. This is viewed as a consequence of the better construction of the test building compared to actual construction. Investigated retrofit includes adding a welded moment resisting steel frame around of the garage opening and strengthening the diaphragm to header beam connections. The study indicates that the retrofit significantly reduced the maximum story drift in the open front. Moreover, the finish material and the retrofit greatly reduce the maximum rotation of the building about the vertical axis.  相似文献

Recently, the importance of considering residual (permanent) deformations in the performance assessment of structures has been recognized. Advanced structural systems with re-centering properties as those based on unbonded post-tensioning tendons are capable of controlling or completely eliminating residual deformations. However, for more traditional systems, which count for the vast majority of buildings, residual deformations are currently considered an unavoidable result of structural inelastic response under severe seismic shaking.

In this article, a probabilistic framework for a performance-based seismic assessment of structures considering residual deformations is proposed. The development of a probabilistic formulation of a combined three-dimensional performance matrix, where maximum and residual deformations are combined to define the performance level corresponding to various damage states for a given seismic intensity levels, is first presented. Combined fragility curves expressing the probability of exceedence of performance levels defined by pairs of maximum-residual deformations are then derived using bivariate probability distributions. The significance of evaluating and accounting for residual deformations within a Performance-based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE) approach is further confirmed via numerical examples on the response of Single Degree of Freedom (SDOF) systems, with different hysteretic behavior, under a selected suite of earthquake records. Joined fragility curves corresponding to various performance levels, defined as a combination of maximum and residual response parameters, are derived while investigating the effects of hysteretic systems and strength ratios. It is observed that stiffness degrading Takeda systems result in lower residual deformations than elasto-plastic systems and show lower probability of exceeding a jointed maximum-residual performance level. For a chosen performance level, Takeda systems with higher strength ratios show better performance, particularly with lower intensity of excitations.  相似文献

Contemporary seismic design is based on dissipating earthquake energy through significant inelastic deformations. This study aims at developing an understanding of the inelastic behavior of braced frames of modular steel buildings (MSBs) and assessing their seismic demands and capacities. Incremental dynamic analysis is performed on typical MSB frames. The analysis accounts for their unique detailing requirements. Maximum inter-story drift and peak global roof drift were adopted as critical response parameters. The study revealed significant global seismic capacity and a satisfactory performance at design intensity levels. High concentration of inelasticity due to limited redistribution of internal forces was observed.  相似文献
