During past decades, a number of ports worldwide have suffered extensive earthquake-related damage. As seaports play a key role in the world's economy, their seismic performance should be enhanced, clearly stated and reliably pursued by designers. This work focuses on seismic vulnerability of wharves in Italy. According to a recently carried out statistical study, most of the existing wharves are gravity-type, made of superimposed, dry-connected blocks, particularly in older facilities. Such technology is widely in use worldwide but it has not attracted much research interest so far. In the present study, the validity of current, simplified design approaches has been investigated by comparison with the results of inelastic dynamic time-history analyses. Permanent displacements of the wall blocks have been calculated. Available performance criteria have been reviewed. A real wharf structure in the Port of Ancona (Italy) has been studied in depth, as a methodological example. For such structure, a parametric study has been conducted with the aim of investigating the role played by different design parameters and to assess the validity of the widely in use pseudo-static method.  相似文献

The effectiveness of the multi-mode control of seismically excited building installed with distributed multiple tuned mass dampers (d-MTMDs) is investigated by comparing dynamic response with the other controllers, such as passive friction dampers, semi-active dampers, single tuned mass damper (STMD), and multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMDs-all.top), both installed at the top of the building, and arbitrarily distributed MTMDs (ad-MTMDs). It is concluded that the d-MTMDs exhibit improved performance as compared with the STMD, MTMDs-all.top, and ad-MTMDs. The d-MTMDs are also convenient to install owing to the reduced space requirements, being placed at various floors.  相似文献

Due to the large economical losses derived from recent seismic events, design methodologies that are based in the explicit control of the dynamic response of structures have been formulated. This article introduces, within the framework of performance-based design, a numerical methodology for the seismic design of structures that are expected to undergo severe cumulative plastic demands. The methodology explicitly considers and integrates: (1) the structural and non-structural performance of the building; (2) the life safety limit state; and (3) the prevention of low cycle fatigue.  相似文献

Seismic bridge design codes require that bridge piers designed according to prescribed design rules should attain specified multiple seismic performance objectives. However, design codes do not explicitly require checking the attainment of specified performance objectives for designed bridge piers. In this article, seismic performance levels have been correlated with engineering damage parameters. A checking method for multiple seismic performance objectives of bridge piers has been outlined and validated with experimental results. The application of the method has been demonstrated by checking the performance of a bridge pier designed according to a code provision for a wide range earthquake ground motions.  相似文献

The concept of base isolation is a century old, but application to civil engineering structures has only occurred over the last several decades. Application to light-frame wood buildings in North America has been virtually non existent with one notable exception. This article quantitatively examines issues associated with application of base isolation in light-frame wood building systems including: (1) constructability issues related to ensuring sufficient in-plane floor diaphragm stiffness to transfer shear from the superstructure to the isolation system; (2) evaluation of experimental seismic performance of a half-scale base-isolated light-frame wood building; and (3) development of a displacement–based seismic design method and numerical model and their comparison with experimental results. The results of the study demonstrate that friction pendulum system (FPS) bearings offer a technically viable passive seismic protection system for light-frame wood buildings in high seismic zones. Specifically, the amount and method of stiffening the floor diaphragm is not unreasonable, given that the inter-story drift and accelerations at the upper level of the tested building were very low, thus resulting in the expectation of virtually no structural, non structural, or contents damage in low-rise wood frame buildings. The nonlinear dynamic model was able to replicate both the isolation layer and superstructure movement with good accuracy. The displacement-based design method was proven to be a viable tool to estimate the inter-story drift of the superstructure. These tools further underscore the potential of applying base isolation systems for application to North America's largest building type.  相似文献

A series of eccentrically braced frames (EBF) are designed and subjected to nonlinear analyses to highlight ambiguities and differences in current seismic design provisions for EBF structures. This provides motivation to implement better guidance for the checking of local displacement demand considerations and move towards a displacement-based design approach. A recently proposed direct displacement-based design (DDBD) procedure for EBFs is then described and further developed in this article through the calibration of a spectral displacement reduction factors that relate the displacement of an inelastically responding structure to that of the equivalent linear representation used in the DDBD of EBFs. Such an expression is calibrated as part of this study using an experimentally validated numerical model also proposed here for the EBF links such that the actual hysteretic behavior of the links is well represented. The DDBD guidelines are applied to EBF systems from 1–15 stories in height and their performance is verified via nonlinear dynamic analyses using two different sets of design spectrum compatible ground motions. The results of the study indicate the robustness of the proposed DDBD method in limiting the interstory drifts to design limits for a variety of EBF systems with short links, thus demonstrating that the proposed DDBD method is an effective tool for seismic design of EBFs.  相似文献

Simplified expressions to estimate the behavior factor of plane steel moment resisting frames are proposed, based on statistical analysis of the results of thousands of nonlinear dynamic analyses. The influence on this factor of specific structural parameters, such as the number of stories, the number of bays, and the capacity design factor of a steel frame, is studied in detail. The proposed factor describes the seismic strength requirements in order to restrict maximum storey ductility to a predefined value. Interrelation studies between maximum storey ductility and the Park-Ang damage index are also provided for the damage-based interpretation of the performance levels under consideration. Realistic design examples serve to demonstrate the ability of the proposed factor to convert conventional force-based design to a direct performance-based seismic design procedure.  相似文献

Despite the fact that Eccentrically Braced Frames with Vertical Links (VL-EBFs), also referred to as inverted Y-scheme, are codified in Eurocode 8, the issues related to their seismic response and design have not been widely investigated, so that design criteria commonly applied for Eccentrically Braced Frames with Horizontal Links (HL-EBFs) are commonly applied. However, the Theory of Plastic Mechanism Control (TPMC) has been recently extended to the case of VL-EBFs. The aims of this article, on one hand, are to provide a further validation of the recently proposed design procedure, based on TPMC, and, on the other hand, are to compare the seismic performance of dual systems composed by a moment-resisting part and VL-EBF part designed by means of TPMC with those occurring when Eurocode 8 design criteria are applied. The validation of the proposed design procedure is carried out by means of Incremental Dynamic Analyses (IDA). The main purpose of such analyses is the check of the fulfilment of the design goal of TPMC, i.e., the development of a pattern of yielding consistent with the collapse mechanism of global type. Such mechanism is universally recognized as the one leading to the highest energy dissipation capacity. In case of MRF-EBF dual systems, it is characterized by the yielding of all the links and all the beams at their ends. Conversely, all the columns and the diagonal braces remain in elastic range. Obviously, exception is made for the base sections of first story columns. In particular, two case studies are analyzed which are characterized by a different number of stories. Each building structure is designed according to both TPMC and Eurocode 8 provisions. The seismic response obtained is investigated by both push-over and IDA analyses. The attention is focused on the pattern of yielding obtained, the maximum interstory drift demand, the link plastic rotation demand and sharing of the seismic base shear between the moment-resisting part and the bracing part of the structural system. The results obtained point out improvement of the seismic response, compared to Eurocode 8 provisions, achieved by means of TPMC.  相似文献

The paper focuses on the seismic response of steel pin-jointed frames braced by lightweight cladding panels. In particular, with the aim to investigate the performance of such a structural scheme when acting as a dissipative system, a wide numerical study has been developed. It is based upon available shear tests on screwed sandwich panels, whose experimental cyclic responses are properly incorporated into a scope-oriented, computer program. The goal is firstly to check the possibility of using cladding panels as shear diaphragms in seismic areas and then to assess an appropriate design behaviour factor, accounting for their actual hysteretic response. Key findings from the nonlinear dynamic analyses are: (1) a portal frame steel building in a low-medium seismicity zone may be braced by common cladding panels, completely avoiding the use of other bracing systems; (2) this structural solution, if compared with a conventional one, appears to be more efficient and cost-effective, giving rise to a weight saving which, in the case under examination, reaches a value of about 20%; (3) on the basis of the numerical study a design behaviour factor q d =2 seems to be realistic for such a structural typology.  相似文献

An optimization method based on uniform damage distribution is used to find optimum design load distribution for seismic design of regular and irregular shear-buildings to achieve minimum structural damage. By using 75 synthetic spectrum-compatible earthquakes, optimum design load distributions are obtained for different performance targets, dynamic characteristics, and site soil classifications. For the same structural weight, optimum designed buildings experience up to 40% less global damage compared to code-based designed buildings. A new general load distribution equation is presented for optimum performance-based seismic design of structures which leads to a more efficient use of structural materials and better seismic performance.  相似文献

The development and refinement of performance seismic design is underway, thus understanding the dynamic behavior of woodframe structures has become critical. Although several full scale shake table tests have been performed, many details associated with load transfer/path and behavior of varying systems remains to be investigated. This short technical communication presents the results of a study whose objective was to scale a woodframe structure to one-half scale using similitude theory, something that has eluded researchers to date. It is widely felt that woodframe structures cannot be scaled because there is no way to scale a naturally occurring fibrous material with non isotropic properties. However, because the dynamic response of wood shearwalls (and thus woodframe structures) is dominated by the behavior of the sheathing-to-framing connectors, an energy-based similitude was developed at the connector/fastener (nail) level. Shake table tests were performed for both the full-scale prototype and half-scale model. Peak displacements at roof level for the prototype and model were found to be very close, i.e., within 2%, for the largest simulated ground motion and only within 30% for the smallest simulated ground motions. While the displacement time series scaled very well, the resulting damage did not scale.  相似文献

This article investigates the seismic performance of one-story reinforced concrete structures for industrial buildings. To this aim, the seismic response of two structural prototypes, a cast-in-situ monolithic frame and a precast hinged frame, is compared for four different levels of translatory stiffness and seismic capacity. For these structures an incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed within a Monte Carlo probabilistic simulation. The results obtained from the probabilistic analysis prove that precast structures have the same seismic capacity of the corresponding cast-in-situ structures and confirm the overall goodness of the design criteria proposed by Eurocode 8, even if a noteworthy dependency of the actual structural behavior from the prescribed response spectrum is pointed out.

The experimental verification of these theoretical results is searched for by means of pseudodynamic tests on full-scale structures. The results of these tests confirm the overall equivalence of the seismic behavior of precast and cast-in-situ structures. Moreover, two additional prototypes have been designed to investigate the seismic behavior of precast structures with roof elements placed side by side. The results of these further tests show that an effective horizontal diaphragm action can be activated even if the roof elements are not connected among them, and confirm the expected good seismic performance of these precast systems. Finally, the results of the experimental tests are compared with those obtained from nonlinear structural analyses. The good agreement between numerical and experimental results confirms the accuracy of the theoretical model and, with it, the results of the probabilistic investigation.  相似文献

Because of the crucial role of free vibration frequency of a structure (e.g., a bridge) in design procedure, more realistic estimation of the frequency ends up in safer and more optimized design. As obtaining the free vibration frequencies of a bridge, considering soil-pile group-structure interaction, provide more realistic values, development of an analytical model to obtain such free vibration frequencies is studied in this research work. Most researchers have studied models with a single pile foundation. The purpose of this study is to assess soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects on dynamic performance of pile group supported bridges. A new analytical model is proposed to predict seismic analysis of these bridges. Applying the dynamic equations of motion for the system, SSI effects have been estimated. Based on the suggested analytical model, a new approximate equation is proposed for calculating natural frequency of pile group supported bridges. Equation accuracy has been investigated by comparing the results with those achieved by previous studies. Most periods calculated by the approximate equation are similar to those given for other case studies, indicating that the model could be applicable to other projects. Since the proposed model is very similar to real soil-pile-pier systems, this approximate equation can be used in preliminary seismic design of bridges.  相似文献

Previous research has proposed the Linked Column Frame (LCF) as a lateral load-resisting system capable of providing rapid return to occupancy for buildings impacted by moderate earthquake events and collapse prevention in very large events. The LCF consists of flexible moment frames (MF) and linked columns (LC), which are closely spaced dual columns interconnected with bolted links. The linked columns (LC) are designed to limit seismic forces and provide energy dissipation through yielding of the links, while preventing damage to the moment frame under certain earthquake hazard levels. The proposed design procedure ensures the links of the linked column yield at a significantly lower story drift than the beams of the moment frame, enabling design of this system for two distinct performance states: rapid repair, where only link damage occurs and quick link replacement is possible; and collapse prevention, where both the linked column and moment frame may be damaged.

Here, the seismic performance factors for the LCF system, including the response modification factor, R, the system over-strength factor, Ω0, and the deflection amplification factor, Cd, are established following the procedures described in FEMA P695 [2009]. These parameters are necessary for inclusion of the system in the building code. This work describes the development of archetype structures, numerical models of the LCF systems, incremental dynamic analyses, and interpretation of the results. From the results, it is recommended that R, Ω0, and Cd values of 8, 3, and 5.5 be used for seismic design of the LCF system. A height limit of 35 m (115ft) is recommended at this time as taller LCFs are not considered in this study.  相似文献

The concept of performance-based design is considered in the framework of Robust Design Optimization (RDO) for the design of steel structures. The RDO problem is treated as a two-objective optimization problem where the initial construction cost and the variance of the maximum interstorey drift for the 10% in 50 years hazard level are considered as the problem objectives to be minimized. The structural performance is evaluated by means of the reliability demand and resistance methodology of the FEMA-350 guidelines in order to take into account both uncertainty and randomness in a consistent manner. The structure is designed to respond for different levels of seismic hazard levels with a desired confidence. The limit-state damage cost is used as a measure for the assessment of selected designs that have been obtained through the proposed RDO formulation. The non deterministic finite element problem encountered, is solved using the Monte Carlo Simulation method. The NSGA-II algorithm has been combined with the Evolution Strategies optimization algorithm for solving the two-objective optimization problem at hand.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Historical masonry structures are often located in earthquake-prone regions and the majority of them are considered to be seismically vulnerable and unsafe. Historical masonry towers are slender structures that exhibit unique architectural features and may present many inadequacies in terms of seismic performance. The seismic protection of such typologies of structures and the design of effective retrofitting interventions require a deep understanding of their behavior under horizontal loads. This paper presents the results of the seismic performance evaluation of historical masonry towers located in Northern Italy. A large set of case studies is considered, comprising a significant number of towers with high slenderness and marked inclination. First, a preliminary assessment of the dynamic behavior of the different towers is carried out through eigenfrequency analyses. Then, non-linear dynamic simulations are performed using a real accelerogram with different peak ground accelerations. A damage plasticity material model, exhibiting softening in both tension and compression, is adopted for masonry. The huge amount of results obtained from the non-linear dynamic simulations allows a comparative analysis of the towers to be performed in order to assess their seismic vulnerability and to show the dependence of their structural behavior on some geometrical characteristics, such as slenderness, inclination, and presence of openings and belfry. The evaluation of different response parameters and the examination of tensile damage distributions show the high vulnerability of historical masonry towers under horizontal loads, mainly in the presence of marked inclination and high slenderness. Some general trends of the seismic behavior of the towers are deduced as a function of the main typological features.  相似文献

A direct methodology for solving the seismic intensity of each point on the capacity curve is proposed. By utilizing the procedure, a continuous curve between the structural response and the seismic intensity, the structural response function, can be easily generated. Unlike previous procedures that search for the performance point of a determined seismic intensity, the proposed methodology easily draws the full curve without iterations. The procedure is applicable to both a smooth design spectrum and an actual response spectrum. Examples indicate the methodology is accurate and fast, and convenient to be combined with existing procedures, such as Modal Pushover Analysis.  相似文献

The fundamental frequency of a structure enables better assessment of its seismic demand for an efficient design and planning of its maintenance and retrofit strategy. The frequency is independent of the type of external loads, however, depends on structural stiffness, mass, damping and boundary conditions. In the case of slender masonry structures such as towers, minarets chimneys, and pagoda temples, it is influenced by mass and stiffness distribution, connection to adjacent structures, material properties, aspect ratio and slenderness ratio. In this present article, the data collected from various literature reviews on the slender masonry structures regarding dynamic, geometrical, and mechanical characteristics have been correlated to identify the major parameters influencing the fundamental frequency of such structures. The database has been used for developing an empirical formulation for predicting the fundamental frequency of such structures. The comparison between the experimental fundamental frequencies and the estimated fundamental frequencies are carried out in order to define reliability and accuracy of these empirical formulae.  相似文献

The role of residual deformations when evaluating the performance of multi-storey frame structures subjected to ground motion is investigated in this paper. The limitations of damage indices available in the literature, either based on ductility, energy dissipation or a combination of both, in capturing such a significant aspect of the seismic response of frame structures are discussed. The concept of residual deformations as a critical complementary indicator to cumulative damage, introduced in a companion paper (Part I) for single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems, is herein extended to multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) frame systems. The seismic performance of multi-storey frame structures, either representative of new designed or existing structures, is investigated, focusing on the response in terms of residual deformations. Residual deformations are shown to be sensitive to the hysteretic rule adopted, to the system inelastic mechanism as well as to the seismic intensity. The influence of higher modes and P-Δ effects on the final residual deformations is addressed. A combination of maximum drift and residual drift in the format of a performance matrix is used to define the system's global performance levels and is then extended to a framework for an alternative performance-based seismic design and assessment approach.  相似文献

In this article, a performance-based seismic design (PBD) methodology is proposed for the design of reinforced concrete buildings, taking into account the influence of infill walls. Two variants of the PBD framework are examined: The first is based on the non-linear static analysis procedure (NSP) while the second relies on the non-linear dynamic analysis procedure (NDP). Both design approaches are compared in the context of structural optimization with reference to the best possible design achieved for each case examined. Life-cycle cost analysis is considered a reliable tool for assessing the performance of structural systems and it is employed in this study for assessing the optimum designs obtained. The optimization part of the problem is performed with an Evolutionary Algorithm while three performance objectives are implemented in all formulations of the design procedures. The two most important findings can be summarized as follows: (i) if structural realization follows the design assumptions, then total expected life-cycle cost of the three type of structures, bare, fully infilled and open ground story, is almost the same and (ii) if an open ground story building is designed as bare or as fully infilled frame, real performance will be much worse than anticipated at the design stage.  相似文献
