The Politics of Provisioning: Feeding South Asian Prisoners During the First World War

During the First World War, the German and British Governments supplied culturally appropriate rations and secured special facilities for food preparation and consumption for South Asian prisoners of war whose loyalty both governments sought. The food provided in POW camps to South Asians serves as an index of the political status of colonial subjects at a moment when the future of European empires was far from certain. The British Government’s approach to feeding its South Asian servicemen held by the enemy thus reveals this population’s place within Britain’s wartime national and imperial imaginary and in its post-war planning.     

Mayan Cognition,Memory and Trauma

The argument of this article is organized around the following general themes: understanding representational “exaggeration” for signifying indigenous others; assessing the differences for the social agency of recollection, especially in relation to lawyer‐oriented depositions and researcher‐oriented interviews; analysing the cognitive aspects of surviving the Guatemalan genocide and examining the cognition of discrimination among Mayan‐immigrants in South Florida. Empirical data for this essay is based upon oral histories of three Mayan‐immigrants currently living in Palm Beach County, Florida, and archival data from legal depositions in the 1980s and 1990s of five Mayan‐immigrants in Martin County, Florida. Important aspects of this paper analyse the historical consequences of the Guatemalan Civil War during the 1980s and the role of social memory, episodic trauma, semantic trauma and the ontological effects of violence. In addition, notions of differing forms of time in relation to trauma are introduced as “synchronic trauma” and “diachronic trauma”.

Creighton Gabel, Editor of the Journal of Field Archaeology from 1986 to 1995 and co-founder of the Department of Archaeology at Boston University, died February 22, 2004, in Vero Beach, Florida, after an extended battle with cancer. He was 72.

南京临时政府成立后,为配合孙中山北伐,范鸿仙组建了铁血军。铁血军共有四个支队万余人,而且都是训练有素、不拿俸薪的革命志士。未几,南北和议告成,孙中山被迫辞职,范鸿仙即取消铁血军番号,所部分别拨归陆军部和安徽都督府。铁血军虽然只维持了月余,却体现了孙中山的革命意图,维护了南京临时政府的安全,也为革命党人训练了一支武装队伍,在以后的二次革命中发挥了积极作用。

THE 1424 CHART AND ITS FANTASTIC INTERPRETATION

A Leningrad historian of cartography takes issue with an interpretation of the Nautical Chart of 1424 (now at the University of Minnesota) suggesting that the geographical names on the map correspond to those in the old Norse Vinland sagas, and concluding that the Vikings may have reached Florida and Cuba, and that Vinland was actually one of the Greater Antilles. Kogan also questions the suggestion that the 1424 chart was based on information collected by an English Franciscan monk during a supposed expedition to the North Pole in 1360.
