Más de cincuenta años del nacimiento del teatro catalán moderno: retrospectiva del Teatro Independiente

More than fifty years after the founding of Els Joglars and several similar events, it is time to evaluate what Catalan independent theater meant for the whole of Spanish drama and the future of theater in Catalonia. This article outlines an original route through theater companies, directors, playwrights, etc., with the aim of a retrospective drawing of a new map of Catalan theater of the 1960s and 1970s.     

La clerecía del Fernán González

The Poema de Fernán González is usually regarded as a hybrid text—while its subject matter is deemed epic, its expression, intentionality, and ideology are considered clerical. This article studies several elements shared by Fernán González and the other poems of the mester de clerecía school: the same stanza (the cuaderna vía) and poetic rules; similar modes of composition, transmission, and reception; and common structural, thematic, and verbal patterns. The article concludes that the Poema de Fernán González fully participates in the common artistry of the mester de clerecía and therefore can be regarded as the attempt to produce epic poetry by this learned clerical school.     

La lógica del absolutismo. Vecinos y magistrados en Charcas en tiempos del reformismo borbónico

El artículo analiza la relación entre el reformismo borbónico y el desarrollo de espacios públicos de deliberación sobre asuntos de interés común en la ciudad de La Plata, la sede de la real audiencia de Charcas (hoy Sucre), hacia fines de la década de 1770. Se exploran un conjunto de luchas en torno a cuestiones críticas al programa reformista, tales como los recortes a las potestades del ayuntamiento, las preeminencias ceremoniales, el monopolio del tabaco y los medios legítimos de resolución de conflictos entre gobernantes y gobernados. Como resultado, se genera una politización de las relaciones de mando y obediencia, la multiplicación de controversias en diversos ámbitos donde se desenvolvía la vida pública y la difusión de pasquines como medio de propagación de opiniones contestatarias. Argumentamos que este proceso terminó por poner en cuestión tanto los fundamentos ideológicos como las condiciones de posibilidad de las políticas absolutistas.     

El Caballero de Dios y la muy noble reina: María de Molina's patronage of the Libro del Caballero Zifar

This article analyzes the political discourses on chivalry and gender in Libro del Caballero Zifar and provides textual evidence in support of the theory that María de Molina was an original patron of this anonymous work from the cathedral school of Toledo. Using the portrait of the queen in the prologue as a point of departure, this study explores the intertextuality of Libro del Caballero Zifar and contemporary royal chronicles, elucidating the manner in which the political discourse of the former supports the political propaganda of the latter, ultimately creating a legitimizing discourse for María de Molina's rule as queen of Castile-León at the turn of the fourteenth century.

Cuerpo y nación a través del poema "Su cuerpo es una isla en escombros" de Domingo de Ramos

This article is devoted mainly to one poem, "Su cuerpo es una isla en escombros," by Domingo de Ramos (1960), and its relationship to the Peruvian armed conflict that lasted from 1980 to 2000. The article focuses on one incident, the Peruvian prison massacre of June 1986. As part of the analysis, poetry by Alejandro Romualdo (1926-2008) and the Andean myth of the Inkarri are also used. The article shows how Domingo de Ramos's poetry, like similar work by other Peruvian poets, participates in a long tradition that uses the body as a space to represent sociohistorical processes.     

La re-escritura de la novela romántica argentina del siglo XIX: de Lucio V. Mansilla a Florencia Bonelli en Indias blancas

Contemporary Latin American retro-foundational or neo-romantic narratives allow scholars to reanalyze the nineteenth century's hegemonic discourse. They also provide an opportunity to rethink how social classes, ethnicities, and genders interacted during the past. Argentinean writers are rewriting some novels by authors of previous eras to raise points about national identity and historiography. Indias blancas and Indias blancas: La vuelta del ranquel by Florencia Bonelli are based on Una excursión a los indios ranqueles by Lucio Victorio Mansilla. Mansilla's provocative and long forgotten novel was brought to a new life through the re-examination of the Conquest/s of the Desert, during which the native population of the Argentinean Pampa was gradually exterminated. Although Bonelli's work presents some similar scenarios and themes as Mansilla's novel, the two volumes of Indias blancas parody the époque representation of the virginal, flimsy, powerless, and self-denying Creole women and the vicious savages of the Pampas. In addition, the contemporary narrative satirizes the Creole's civility and paternalism toward the indigenous population, whose displacement benefited the latifundia (large estate) system in Argentina.
