SOLDERING WITH GOLD ALLOYS IN ANCIENT SOUTH AMERICA: EXAMINATION OF TWO SMALL GOLD STUDS FROM ECUADOR

This paper presents the results of electron microprobe analysis of two gold studs, and their associated gold alloy solders. from La Tolita in Ecuador. Metallographic and compositional data are presented and the types of solders used are discussed.     

THE ACCURACY OF THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY METHOD FOR THE ANALYSIS OF GOLD ALLOYS

Two possible sources of error in the measurement and interpretation of the specific gravities of gold coins are investigated. First, the effect of the presence of copper was measured and found to be more significant than previously thought. It is shown that the presence of 5% of copper in a gold-silver alloy results in a measured gold content which is 3.3% too low when the coin is analysed by the specific gravity method. Secondly, the importance of cleaning the coins before measuring the specific gravity is also demonstrated.     

A NOTE ON THE LOCATION OF MEDICAL FACILITIES

In this note, I present a method to estimate the desired distance between medical facilities. The survival rate of patients improves when the facility is larger, however larger facilities result in a longer driving distance to the facility which decreases the survival rate. I identify the desired distance between facilities for which the survival rate is maximized.

A NOTE ON THE ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEM OF THE OLD HITTITE KINGDOM

From the 17th to the 12th Century B.C. the Hittite Kingdom was one of the most notable powers in the Near East. It ranged over a vast geographical area dominating the surrounding cities and smaller states. Throughout this time the Hittites consistently developed their political system thereby ascending to the level of an empire. From sources pertaining to this era, it can be ascertained that already in the early stages, when the borders were not as extended, the Hittite Kingdom adopted the tradition of sending the king＇s sons and princes to the newly conquered regions and significant cities.     

A NOTE ON THE FORMULATION OF A FULL-ANALOGUE REGRESSION MODEL OF THE SHIFT-SHARE METHOD

ABSTRACT. This paper presents a full-analogue regression model of the deterministic shift-share method, for analyzing the components of regional employment change. The model is formulated as a constrained least squares regression problem. This leads to a direct determination of estimates for the national, industrial, and regional growth coefficients. The statistical significance of these coefficients and the overall model can then be tested by using standard regression test statistics.
