The China Hearings: America's Shifting Paradigm on China

This article attempts to fill a hole in rapprochement literature by examining the 1966 Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings on the People's Republic of China. Historian Michael Lumbers contends that the China hearings served as a watershed in American attitudes toward China. This article explains how and why this change occurred. The China hearings contributed to Sino-American rapprochement in two different ways. One, the witnesses suggested to the public a new policy toward China, containment without isolation. The popularity of containment without isolation and the Johnson administration's use of it in their policy reorientation suggest that the China hearings had an effect. The hearings were not only a turning point, but also the culmination of a larger process. It demonstrated that American sentiment toward China had clearly moved away from hostility and toward cooperation. And during the 1960s, scholars of East Asian studies served as opinion leaders in this process.

中国古代小说的研究,首先离不开文献的整理.因此近百年来的古代小说研究,文献学研究的成果占了很大比重.我在这里根据自己的了解和摸索,试作一些介绍和分析. 一、关于小说的目录 古代小说的概念非常宽泛,历来史志书目所著录小说的范围广狭各不相同.如郑樵所说,小说常与传记、杂家、杂史、故事相混.古人所谓的小说,我们今天很难给它定性.     

中国的埃及学研究

诞生于19世纪20年代初期的埃及学,是一门世界性的学科。目前,世界上所有发达国家都建立了自己的埃及学,其中规模较大的有美国、英国、德国、法国等国。世界各国埃及学研究共同组成国际埃及学家协会,定期召开学术会议,广泛进行国际合作与学术交流,使全世界埃及学研究之间的联系更加紧密。本拟就我国的埃及学研究从无到有的发展历程作一阐述。     

近代中国早期的公司

在欧洲商业组织引入中国以前,中国的实体股权长久以来一直依靠文化的以及法律习俗所支撑。在缺少法典化、系统化的私法惯例之下,深深植根于日常惯例之中的契约文化和使私人契约生效的政府维持了商业的日益增长。类似的惯例满足了商界寻求方法聚积资本并长久维持商行的需求。这些习俗的发展有助于解释西方式的公司法颁布之后中国对西方判例的适应性以及中国习俗自相矛盾的存留状态。

清朝皇帝的中国观

清宣统三年末,隆裕皇太后在清帝逊位前夕向全体臣民宣布:“总期人民安堵,海宇安,仍合满、蒙、汉、回、藏五族完全领土为一大中华民国”。经过数千年的历史积淀,历尽沧桑、千锤百炼的“中国”概念,终由清朝一锤定音。从这个意义上讲,清朝不仅留给今天中国人民国家版图与统一的多民族国家的物质财富,而且留下了界定“中国”一词内涵与外延的弥足珍贵的精神财富。     

"东北工程"与中国东北史的研究

“东北边疆历史与现状系列研究工程”(简称“东北工程”)是一项跨学科、跨地域、跨部门的大型科研项目 ,它是伴随着我国社会科学的不断繁荣应运而生的。“东北工程”的任务是总结以往研究成果 ,集中优势力量 ,深入研究东北边疆历史上的疑点问题、现实中的热点问题和理论上的难点问题 ,使整体研究水平有一个较大提高 ,在此基础上 ,形成系列化、权威性的研究成果。本文是作者 2 0 0 4年 1 0月 6日— 1 1日参加韩国精神文化研究院国际文化宣传中心和德国乔治·艾克特国际教科书研究所联合主办的“关于亚洲和欧洲民族主义与教科书问题国际学术讨论会”的论文 ,文中对“东北工程”的研究计划、课题进展情况等均做了详细介绍。为了让国内外学术界对“东北工程”有一个正确的了解 ,征得作者同意 ,特予刊发。     

The Fengzeng System in Song China

In ancient China, filial piety occupied a crucial position. The highest yi 義 (righteousness) is respect for ancestors, and the ultimate ren 仁 (benevolence) is to make parents illustrious. These were universally accepted moral values. Consequently, the fengzeng 封贈 (enfeoffments and posthumous honours), a system that gives honourific titles to officials, their ancestors and other family members, has played a significant role. In spite of its tremendous importance in ancient Chinese history, the system has been studied very little. This article conducts an in-depth examination of the concept of fengzeng by focusing on the following three questions: from whence does the system originate, and when did it begin? How can we differentiate feng from zeng? And, finally, what normative principles does the system represent?
