Did Homer know the story of the 'Judgement of Pads'? The answer to this question depends on our assessment of two or three verses towards the end of the Iliad. Alexander von Stael-Holstein (I877-I937) was a world famous Russian orientalist who, in the early part of the 2oth century, lived permanently in Beijing for various reasons.' On the recommendation of Hu Shi胡适, he received a teaching position at Peking University. In i929 he was formally appointed professor of Central Asian Philology at Harvard University, staying there for one academic year. Although a Harvard professor, he did not stay in the United States, but continued to live in Peking, directing his Sino-Indian Institute (SII) which he had founded in i927. After receiving the Harvard professorship, the Sino-Indian Institute became part of the Harvard-Yenching Institute (the HYI). As he wrote, only in Beijing could he do his beloved research on Buddhist texts in Sanskrit, Tibetan and Chi- nese. At the SII, he received American students sent by the HYI, as well as young scholars from various countries who came to study Buddhist texts. This paper will present this well- known academic story, based on Stael-Holstein's correspondence that is preserved at the Harvard-Yenching Library, of which most is in English, but some are in German, French and Russian.  相似文献

The 29 inscribed bamboo slips, which were unearthed from Tomb 1 at Changtaiguan, Xinyang, Henan province, might have been organized into a volume for recording the funeral objects of Tomb 1. In this article, the author discusses some characters on the bamboo slips such as cun (inch) , jing (diameter) , bo (width) , yin (mat) , etc. Based on the interpretation of these characters and the position of the related funeral objects, a group of the 6 bamboo slips numbered 2-09, 2-07, 2-10, 2-15, 2-13, 2-02 and another one of the 4 bamboo slips numbered 2-21, 2-23, 2-19, 2-28 are placed in order separately.  相似文献

The administrative title 'scribe of the necropolis' (ss n p3 hr^1) is a well-known and well-studied aspect of New Kingdom scholarship.2 For the duration of the royal necropolis at Thebes (1550-1069 BCE.), today known as the Valley of the Kings, the scribe of the necropolis was responsible for keeping daily accounts of the work undertaken at the site, and supplying and distributing rations for the general workforce.
