Preservation in Industrial Archaeology

Abstract

Much of the recent interest in Industrial Archaeology has grown out of the preservation movement: the standing of the subject, in the eyes of the world, is particularly influenced by our choices for preservation and the methods of presentation which we employ. It therefore behoves us to ensure a proper theoretical basis for industrial preservation. This paper offers some suggestions for much needed guidelines concerning the rational selection and treatment of those industrial remains which ought to be preserved. The question of 'total environment preservation' is also considered.     

Industrial Archaeology in New Zealand

Abstract

Notwithstanding its isolation and very small population New Zealand has a remarkably interesting legacy of industrial archaeology. Early industries were stimulated by a rugged colonial self-reliance and in spite of the temporary nature of many structures there is a reasonable measure of visual evidence remaining. Fanning and gold-mining generated other industries, in particular the manufacture of agricultural equipment and mining machinery. In addition to shipbuilding, refrigeration of meat and dairy produce, timber milling, flaxmilling and coalmining there were many service industries leaving industrial monuments and relics. Unlike Britain there is only a very small number of people committed to the study, recording and preservation of industrial archaeology.

Industrial Archaeology in Western Europe: A Bibliography

Abstract

This bibliography lists books and articles covering industrial archaeology throughout Western Europe, excluding the British Isles. While it cannot claim to be complete, it is offered in the hope that it will be of some help to those concerned with industrial archaeology outside the British Isles. Its arrangement is simple. After a brief general section, the bibliography is divided alphabetically by country and within each country societies are listed first followed by books and articles on the industrial archaeology of that country.

A Strategy for Industrial Archaeology in the Black Country

Abstract

Remains from Britain's industrial past are being lost daily. Much has gone already, often with its importance unrecognised. This applies no more so than in the Black Country where a joint local authority/university initiative set about addressing the problem by identifying, through Local Area Surveys, significant remains from the industrial period. Arising from this, Dudley MBC's 'Strategy for Industrial Archaeology' now allows important sites to be flagged throughout the planning and development process and, with public involvement and the imaginative use of existing controls, a degree of protection is afforded. It is hoped that the approach described below will form the basis of discussion and encourage similar initiatives elsewhere.     

陕西乾县河里范遗址发掘简报

河里范遗址位于陕西省乾县城东约15公里的泔河南岸二级台地之上,2005年发掘了400余平方米,出土大量的陶器、石器等遗物,可辨认出仰韶中期、晚期和龙山早期三种遗存。本次发掘表明泔河流域在仰韶中晚期到龙山早期这段时间,与渭水中上游地区同期的考古学文化无论从整体的陶系、器形、器物组合及陶器的纹饰特征都基本接近,相较之下与泾水上游同期遗存的差别在仰韶晚期时开始明显。该遗址是泔河流域的首次考古发掘,对关中西部地区史前文化的研究提供了新的资料。     

Forty years of Industrial Archaeology Review: A Personal View

ABSTRACT

This article presents a personal view of the origins and development of Industrial Archaeology Review in the 40th volume of its publication. This is preceded by an account of the earlier journals to publish articles on industrial archaeology, as well as a brief account of such articles in the sister journal, Post-Medieval Archaeology. A short history of Industrial Archaeology Review is included for future reference purposes. The range of authors contributing to the journal is considered, from the volunteers in local industrial archaeology societies to the professional archaeologists of the later period. Attention is given to the importance of the publication of the annual Rolt Memorial Lectures, as well as the occasional themed issues where articles on specific topics have been grouped together. Finally, the article suggests how best use can be made, in this article and in the journal generally, of the advantages of digitisation.

2008年陕西省考古研究院考古调查发掘新收获
