2008年新年的前夕,我办完事从外面回来,正好碰上康启昌大姐来到我的住宅楼下给我送来还没有整理完的书稿。我接过那厚厚的稿子,没说上几句话,她着急办事,便匆匆地走了。我看着她远去的身影,从她的身影我想到散文作家鲁野先生,他与康启昌都是凤城人。风城,又是我在80年代曾经工作过的地方。     

历史学科必须面对现实拓展研究领域

历史学家应该而且必需对现实深切关怀,注意现实与历史的关系,并不断从现实的挑战中发现新的研究课题,形成学科的新的理论生长点,以发挥史学的社会功能.     

Innocence et puissance Heidegger face au principe de raison

The principle of reason, that is accounting for all things by referring them to an unquestioned, fundamental principle, commands for Heidegger the total mobilization and universal computation of the world by the technical. The critique of this principle seems to lead Heidegger toward a thinking of the relinquishment of things and an epistemology of innocence, freed from any effect of metaphysical, political, or sociological power. That innocence is however ambiguous. It recalls the Heraclitean play of the child-king and announces the return of a mysterious sovereignty. The power of the technical is warded off for the benefit of another power, not less commanding and absolute, a “superpower” which in its turn could effectively mean, in a still more decisive way than the becoming-technical of thinking, the accomplishment and the end of metaphysics.     

New idols: Catholicism in the face of Fascist totalitarianism

Abstract

This article explores the attitudes of the Vatican and Catholic culture towards Fascism and Fascism's political religion during the pontificate of Pius XI, in the context of the Catholic church's rejection of modernity as a new epoch of paganism that took the form of political mysticism. It shows that despite the Concordat of 1929, the papacy reacted with growing alarm to the Fascist regime's ‘sacralization of politics’ that threatened to make Catholic religion a handmaid of the totalitarian state.     

Changing the face of GIS education with communities of practice

A principal focus in GIS higher education has been with developing curricula or accommodating new technologies to reflect the needs of the developing discipline. Pedagogy has largely reflected traditional metaphors of acquisition and transfer in the context of formal education, and this extends to preparation of students for the workplace. In this paper, the authors explore the potential for communities of practice, and in particular virtual communities of practice as a complement to more formal GIS education to provide a route to more situated, participatory learning. In so doing, the emphasis towards creating a GIS professional community of practice offers both the recognition of the role of situated knowledge in developing professional GIS expertise, and provides an important bridge from higher education to the workplace.     

The public face of Southern institutions for the "feeble-minded"

The article examines the history of Southern institutions and how these facilities are presently facing up to that past. Established both to care for and to control a population of individuals labeled as feeble-minded and deviant, these facilities provided little support and help for patients and quickly devolved into over-crowded, under-funded operations. With the de-institutionalization revolution of the late twentieth century, they ceased to be the center of their state's program to handle this population. Currently through websites, museums, archives, and historic building designations, they are beginning to examine their past treatment in a more public fashion.     

Rights to food with a human face in the global south

This article seeks to dispel the popular myth surrounding the food crises which precipitated food riots in the global South in 2008. Arguing from a structural and historical perspective, the article suggests that global hunger is a deep-rooted crisis that is embedded in the social and structural variables associated within the nation-state that places a restraint on the self-regulating capacity of nation-states in the South. Internationalizing the food crisis, however, will do more harm to the south’s agricultural transformation and rural development. The article argues for integrated rural development that will increase output growth through an institutional, technological, and marketing strategy.     

Calixthe Beyala: Black face(s) on French TV

As president and spokeswoman of the French black rights movement, Collectif ÉgalitÉ, Cameroonian-born novelist Calixthe Beyala is committed to pushing for an improvement in the representation of black people on television in France. This article discusses the ways in which the Collectif has attempted to draw the French public's attention to the lack of 'visible minorities' on French TV. It takes as a test case the controversial figure of Beyala herself who has become something of a minor TV celebrity in her own right. What emerges as an apparent contradiction between Beyala's own media representation and the Collectif's campaign will serve to illustrate the ambivalent positioning of black citizens in contemporary France.     

回顾“九五”成就迎接“十五”挑战——辽宁省民族地区经济和社会发展回顾与展望

辽宁作为多民族散杂居的省份,现有8个民族自治县、120个民族乡镇。本文总结和回顾全省民族地区“九五”期间,经济和社会发展取得的成就,民族工作部门为改变少数民族群众的生产生活条件、促进自治地方的经济发展所做的主要工作,并对“十五”民族地区的前景予以展望。     

Growing the natural man: the hirsute face in the antebellum North

This article examines shifts in public attitudes toward beards in the North before the Civil War. While newspapers and magazines depicted beards as unsavory, unnatural, and unhealthy in the 1820s and 1830s, but by the mid-1850s, opinion had shifted completely. It argues that this change resulted from an expanding influence of the Romantic movement and a greater emphasis on sentiment and emotion in northern culture.     

Ambivalent desires: State formation and dispossession in the face of climate crisis

In this paper, we analyze the politics, experiences and dynamics of state formation in a particular context of climate crisis. Through the study of the implementation of state-led adaptation and mitigation projects in two rural localities of northern Colombia, we interrogate the ways in which these interventions shape the everyday lives of those who happen to be located in the targeted areas. We found that, in spite of the different goals and particular configurations of the adaptation and mitigation interventions, these climate projects engendered the same contradiction. They promised a resilient and environmentally sound future, but the path towards that future has not been available to everyone. Furthermore, we show that the subjects of climate interventions do not embrace state promises in the same way. Local expectations, desires and engagement with the state are ambivalent and heterogeneous, and cannot be taken as a given. This paper develops these ideas by way of three arguments. First, we argue that exclusion, dispossession and marginality are inherent to the promises of climate mitigation and adaptation in the cases we study in the Colombian Caribbean. Secondly, the goals of state-led adaptation and mitigation programs we study are at odds with the material and social conditions of the areas of implementation. And thirdly, paying attention to the dynamics of state formation in the Colombian Caribbean in relation to climate change challenges common binaries opposing state absence/presence, failure/success, and retreat/return.     

With the face to the future: The kibbutz in recent literary works

The kibbutz, which was considered one of the greatest successes of the socialist dream, failed to survive history, which replaced socialism with both capitalism and globalization. Numerous texts, literary, documentary, and scholarly, have tried to comprehend the social developments that took place in the kibbutz during the period of its demise, especially over the 1980s and the 1990s. This article focuses on two works – Habayta (Home, Assaf Inbari, 2009) and Bein haverim (Between friends, Amos Oz, 2012) – both of which refrain from solely addressing the rift that the kibbutz underwent, but rather attempt to see in the moment of the kibbutz's disintegration a stage in a historical process that will ultimately enable creation of new values on the ruins of the old ones. Both works triggered powerful response from literary critics and from the general public, and contributed to shaping a new perspective on the history of the kibbutz.
