周伟洲、王欣二教授主编的《丝绸之路辞典》由陕西人民出版社于2018年12月出版。这是此前由周先生和丁景泰主编《丝绸之路大辞典》(陕西人民出版社,2006年)一书的增订本①,二者前后相隔12年。一部学术作品的再版本属稀松平常,但这部巨型的《丝绸之路辞典》再度问世,除了销售告罄的通常含义之外,它与当下“丝绸之路”表征的古典文化之兴盛景象紧密相连.     

The Problem of Creating a Kazakhstan Metallurgical Base

The author favors early development of the high-phosphorus oolitic iron ores of the Lisakovka deposit in Kustanay Oblast, selecting the area of Irtyshshkoye at the intersection of the Irtysh River and the Middle Siberian Railroad as the best site for an iron and steel plant. A Lisakovka-based steel plant would yield basic slag for fertilizer in the surrounding virgin lands farm territory.

Abstract

Philosophy of engineering is an area of study that is still in its infancy – attracting a growing number of researchers but still far behind the established field of philosophy of science. This essay reports on a series of seminars held on the topic at the Royal Academy of Engineering which have demonstrated that it is an area rich with problems for both philosophers and engineers to tackle. These problems can shed light on existing philosophical questions, raise new ones and even have practical value for the engineer.

Abstract

Mormon political theology must reconcile two distinct projects: the care for the Church's concrete, temporal existence in the World, and the welcoming of the future Kingdom of God on earth. Because of this duality, political theology finds itself highlighting the distinction between the World and the Kingdom of God and at the same time pointing out common ground and attempting to establish peace between the Church and the World. The alleged contradictions of Mormon political thought are, according to this conception, to be understood not as confrontations between idealism and brute reality (or “utopianism” and “assimilation”), but rather as the bringing together of the two goals of Mormon political reflection, pursued by two sides of political theology. These two sides, apologetic and prophetic political theology, are distinguished not by their political content, but rather by their particular kinds of political rhetoric.

The "Return of the Subject" As a Historico-Intellectual Problem

Recently, a call for the “return of the subject” has gained increasing influence. The power of this call is intimately linked to the assumption that there is a necessary connection between “the subject” and politics (and ultimately, history). Without a subject, it is alleged, there can be no agency, and therefore no emancipatory projects—and, thus, no history. This paper discusses the precise epistemological foundations for this claim. It shows that the idea of a necessary link between “the subject” and agency, and therefore between the subject and politics (and history) is only one among many different ones that appeared in the course of the four centuries that modernity spans. It has precise historico‐intellectual premises, ones that cannot be traced back in time before the end of the nineteenth century. Failing to observe the historicity of the notion of the subject, and projecting it as a kind of universal category, results, as we shall see, in serious incongruence and anachronisms. The essay outlines a definite view of intellectual history aimed at recovering the radically contingent nature of conceptual formations, which, it alleges, is the still‐valid core of Foucault's archeological project. Regardless of the inconsistencies in his own archeological endeavors, his archeological approach intended to establish in intellectual history a principle of temporal irreversibility immanent in it. Following his lead, the essay attempts to discern the different meanings the category of the subject has historically acquired, referring them back to the broader epistemic reconfigurations that have occurred in Western thought. This reveals a richness of meanings in this category that are obliterated under the general label of the “modern subject”; at the same time, it illuminates some of the methodological problems that mar current debates on the topic.     

The Problem of Organizing a Food-Supply Base for the Yeniseysk Industrial District

The author examines the possibilities of developing a local food supply for the growing population of the prospective Yeniseysk industrial district of central Siberia. Local conditions are found to be economical for the production of a suburban-truck type of farming, with emphasis on fresh vegetables, potatoes and whole milk, as well as pork, poultry and eggs. Grain production is found to be uneconomical and the district will have to rely on grain shipped from other areas.
