1. Introduction
It is commonly recognized that "all historical chronologies for the entire Near East in the 2^nd and 3^rd millennia B.C. are entirely or to a larger or smaller degree dependent on the Assyrian King List" (Sassmannshausen 2004: 66).  相似文献

Abstract

With the standard of care provided by hospitals and nursing homes to those nearing the end of their lives in Britain the subject of much concern and when increasing numbers of people would like to die at home, it is a timely moment to consider end of life care in the 19th century, when death at home was the norm and families had a leading role in providing care. This was also a period of change that laid the foundations for the 20th century model of hospital-centred palliative care. The article examines the experiences of middle and upper class carers, the objectives of care, including the importance of spiritual care, and the practicalities of providing care in the home. It also considers the support available to through informal networks of extended family, friends and neighbours and suggests aspects of care that may still have relevance to palliative care practice today.  相似文献

Abstract

In 1835, John Muston wrote to his brother-in-law, the Birmingham draper Joseph James, from Hobart, Van Diemen’s Land. Muston sought to convince James of the profits he might make by diversifying into trade with the other side of the world. Using this family trading network as a case study, this article will discuss the colonial drapery and clothing trades during the 1830s. Common difficulties for shopkeepers of the period will be highlighted, for instance, the necessity of quickly adapting to the reality of the commercial environment they operated within, rather than the envisaged ideal market. Pragmatic solutions for all consumer preferences needed to be ascertained and swiftly acted upon leading to variety of ways to retail to people across the social spectrum. The enterprise and opportunities for international trade created by England’s provincial retailers, particularly as part of family networks, is therefore uncovered.  相似文献

For a long time now, historians have considered the way across the Col de Clapier as the most likely invasion route of Hannibal's army across the Alps. Mahaney et al. challenge this view by introducing a two‐tier rockfall into the discussion, which they believe is mentioned in the ancient texts and has gone unnoticed by modern scholars. Since a deposit of this kind can only be found at the Col de la Traversette—and there alone—Hannibal's crossing of the Alps, so they reason, must have followed this alternative route. However, a critical reassessment of the ancient texts and a closer look at the geomorphological situation clearly show that this interpretation is unwarranted.  相似文献
