MY UNIVERSITY

Everyone has a sacred place deep in his or her heart. I have two such places:one is my hometown Lhasa who gave me my life;the other is my alma mater Peking University who gave me not only knowledge,but the ability to think for myself instead of following the herd and swimming with the tide. ＂This year, I have seemingly become a famous movie star as my name is well-known amongst many overseas tourists traveling to Gyantse. It is incredible to me that this documentary series had such a great influence after being broadcasted all over theworld. I remember the time when Sun Shuyun （the director of the documentary） came to invite me to be the main character of the documentary and be followed everyday with a camera behind me. To some extent, I did feel frustrated during that particular period.＂     

THE SONAM DAWAS AND THEIR GRANDSON

On the afternoon of July 2, 2012, accompanied by my interpreter, I visited the home of SonamDawa and his wife Tsering Drolkar. It was less than 200 meters from the Namseling village committee. This was an unplanned interview. What led us here was that I had asked my interpreter to take me to a family with elders. For over two hours, we sat in the little courtyard of Sonam＇s home and listened to him talk about his family.

My last interview of Mr.Leque was when he was the Chairman of the Government of Tibet Autonomous Region(TAR).As time went by,Mr.Leque became the Chairman of the People's Congress of TAR.Following the custom,I paid my respects by presenting a delicate Karta whereupon,he gracefully gifted me another in return.Talking and laughing between us put me at ease and then led naturally into my questions.

正I was assigned to my second village at the end of January 2020.Compared to the one in Lhoka where I worked a whole year in 2015,this village in the western part of Nagqu impressed upon me more.Born and raised in Lhasa,I seldom had contact with any nomads or had anything to do with nomadic areas,though I did have a few friends from Nagqu who worked in Lhasa and knew very well of yak meat,butter,and cheese.

Most Tibetan people regard Losar,the Tibetan New Year,as a time for families to come together,but Tsering Pedron instead spends her time treating patients at the Ngari People's Hospital in Ngari Prefecture."I recognize the importance of seeing one's family during the New Year and other key festivals,but if I purely give my time to my family,who else would be there for my patients should they need me?"said Tsering Pedron,who is the Ob-Gyn director of the hospital.She has only gone home to see her family and celebrate the holiday once since 1993.

Before seeing Asgen I had imagined a girl who has been on the stage of various parties on CCTV(China Central Television)many times for such a young age.She might have the air of a star but when I saw her the first time,my former suspicions all vanished right away.Before me,was a Tibetan girl who is so pretty,nice and easy going. When Asgen did the interview with me,the sunshine shone through the window and it was warm and peaceful in the room.As she spoke to me, her eyes were attentive and her voice seemed to penetrate one’s heart with enchantment.

In the Spring of 2008 I visited Pingxiang, a mining town close to the border between Jiangxi and Hunan provinces. I posed for a picture in the empty plaza in front of a large revolutionary era memorial hall with a statue of a reedy young Mao in a scholar＇s gown on the steps leading up to the entrance. The front gates, however, were locked and the plaza had the abandoned air of a ghost town. In the pouring rain I hired a taxi to drive me into the grounds of the Anyuan Coal Mining Company, past another statue of Mao, this one of the older, fuller bodied statesman. I took some more pictures of a dilapidated shell of a building dating from the days when German engineers had dominated the technical staff at the mines. On a dreary rain soaked day, smokestacks across the town still billowed, adding to the gloom, and I remember a feeling of desolation and the desire to get away as soon as possible. This was the Pingxiang of my memory.     

Give Me a Pot of Sweet Tea

For those who come to Tibet for the first time,butter tea is on their list to try.I, however,am an exception to the rule because butter tea just does not agree with me. I prefer the delicate fragrance of sweet tea but enjoy watching Tibetans light butterburning lamps and the serenity of the light from butter lamps in dimly lit monasteries. During my trip through the middle of nowhere on the plateau,we had a happy encounter with some herdsmen taking a break from their journey.
