Smith's suggestion that many villas in north west Europe were owned and occupied by more than one household is examined statistically and found to be unsupported by architectural evidence. Possible social explanations for this are examined, with particular reference to Hingley's social interpretation of the upper Thames region.

<正>An improved income for a tiny village in a sparsely populated area of Northern Tibet,where about 90 households are living,is the result of taking a collective approach to production over a number of years.The people of the village are living in spacious and comfortable houses where they can access both radio and television programs. 1. Origins The search tot the means to maintain health is as ancient as the civilization of man. There is a Tibetan saying that： ＂the first ailment was indigestion; and boiled water,the first medicine,＂ There are many such expressions through which we can deduce the knowledge of ancient times. For example, the application of melted butter to cauterize a wound, or the drinking of boiled water to cure indigestion, tell us something of traditional household treatments. Such experiential knowledge, gathered and passed on for many generations, gradually was collected and became a written tradition.

THE INDONESIANIZATION OF WEST PAPUA

Even before the Republic of Indonesia gained control over the territory of West New Guinea (with the controversial U.N.-supervised Act of Free Choice of 1969), the government had systematically tried to forge new identities for the indigenous peoples, as Indonesians rather than Melanesians. This acculturation process has aimed at incorporating the West Papuan population into the Indonesian nation-state through the education system, the media, economic development and transmigration. The process, ‘Indonesianization’, is predicated on the assumption that inculcation of the Indonesian world-view through contact with what are considered ‘more advanced’ and ‘civilized’ Javanese, will ultimately strengthen national unity and allow greater exploitation of the rich resources in the region. The influx of Asian newcomers, many of whom have taken over the administrative, commercial and industrial spheres in West Papua, has marginalized urban and rural Papuans from economic development. In consequence West Papuans are developing a sense of their own racial and cultural distinctiveness and asserting their rights to greater participation in decision-making and self-determination.
