Emperor Qianlong''''s Painting to the 6th Panchen Erdeni

In the 11th month of the 45th year of the reign of Qing Dynasty Emperor Qianlong (1781), he gave the 6th Panchen Erdeni a painting of a Saba tree complete with a Chi- nese text when the latter came to Beijing to celebrate the imperial birthday. The ink-water painting, 204 cm wide and 90 cm long, bears words written in the Chinese, Tibetan, Manchurian and Mongolian languages. Each of the four sections ends with a seal text meaning Qianlong in corresponding language. Also stamped on the painting are four seal texts of the emperor, such as the one meaning "Treasure of the Emperor in His Advanced Age."

CEREMONIAL INAUGURATION OF THE BUDDHIST COLLEGE OF TIBET TEXT

<正>On October 20th,2011,at the foot of the mountain where Rato Monastery was located in Nyethang Town of Chushur County of Tibet Autonomous Region,the Buddhist College of Tibet was formally established.The president of the college is Drukhang Tupten Khedrup,the president of Tibetan branch of the Chinese Association of Buddhism.The college is 27 kilometers away from Lhasa City and covers an area of 262.48 mu with a total investment of 99.

Iwrote for China's Tibet of the topicbefore, and many of our readerswrote us explaining their under-standing for efforts made by theCentral Government in issues concerningnegotiation with the 14th Dalai Lama.However, the 14th Dalai astonishedthe world by lecturing on October 24,2001 in Strasbourg that he would work on"the Chinese leaders"for"a channel to beexploited,through negotiation with theChinese Government,for the settlementof problems that exist between China andTibet."

As FHC enters a new year,we are very pleased to report on the progress the journal has made in the past year.FHC has published articles on a wide range of topics on Chinese history,featuring a variety of approaches.Whether the methodology was mainstream or cutting edge,all have inspired new ways of conceptualizing Chinese history.In addition to one issue that examined the relationships between the Qing government and its neighbor countries and border areas,FHC launched three forums in the past year.One forum asked how we might,through the lens of critical theory,Marxism,and novel approaches to 20th century capitalism,reinterpret 20th century China.Another forum discussed issues of pregnancy,childrearing,and wedding ceremonies to explore how intellectuals re-conceptualized family management by combining traditional expectations with imported,scientific concepts and practices and how scholars,educators,journalists and officials shifted relationships between Chinese families and the state.The final forum focused on state-building and the transformation of politics,society,economy,and culture under Communist rule in the 1950s and early 1960s.

The Most Precious Cultural Relics and Donations On May 27,2019,a grand donation ceremony was held in Lhasa.Jewon Koodhor Gelek Gyatso,a man known to be the reincarnated spirit of Champa Ling Monastery in Chamdo,made the generous donation as a member of the 13th CPPCC National Committee,the TAR's CPPCC Standing Committee,and the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office.He also concurrently serves as the vice chairman of the TAR's branch of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office and has been warmly welcomed back to his motherland from a life abroad.At the ceremony,the local government of the Tibet Autonomous Region issued Jewon Koodhor Gelek Gyatso a certificate of honor.     

Restituting Church Buildings and Negotiating Church Factions： Missionary Mapmakers and the Making of Local Networks （1712-1716）

At the turn of the 18th century, the Kangxi emperor initiated a large project to map the vast territories of the Qing. The land surveys that ensued were executed by teams of Qing officials and European missionaries, most of them French Jesuits first sent to China in 1685 and actively supported by the French crown. Early 18th century Jesuit publications foster a much-heralded claim that these missionary-mapmakers drew on their status of imperial envoys during the surveys to locally advance the position of the Catholic church. This article strives to explore the format/on of such local networks by these missionaries as they passed through the cities and towns of the Chinese provinces. On the basis of archival material, details emerge of contacts with local Qing administrators and Chinese Christians, and of attempts to purchase and recover local churches. This is then discussed against the background of the Rites Controversy, in an attempt to evaluate how such local networks relate to the rivalry between missionaries of different orders. The article emphasizes that there was （and perhaps is） no such thing as ＂pure science＂ by underscoring that important technical achievements such as the Qing mapping project are often shaped by complex networks and historical contingencies.
