新中国的第一场战“疫”

1949年10月新中国成立前后,察哈尔省察北专区(以下简称"察北专区")暴发了大规模鼠疫。党和政府充分发动群众,采取果断措施,统一组织领导战"疫"工作;广大群众在"扑灭鼠疫,保卫首都,保卫毛主席"的号召下,各行各业同舟共济,战"疫"一盘棋,最终取得了新中国第一场重大公共卫生事件的战"疫"胜利,也为新中国卫生防疫事业留下了一笔宝贵的经验财富。

新中国伊始战“疫”专家汤飞凡的不凡人生

正汤飞凡(1897—1958),湖南醴陵人,中国科学院院士,著名微生物学家,中国第一代医学病毒学家,中国预防医学事业奠基人之一。他一生热爱祖国和人民,终身致力于医学病毒学研究,他试制出中国首支青霉素,系中国疫苗之父和衣原体之父,是曾经最有希望获得诺贝尔奖的中国人。他生产了中国自己的狂犬疫苗、白喉疫苗、牛痘疫苗和世界首支班疹伤寒疫苗,并将沙眼发病率从将近95%降至不到10%。抗日战争结束后,生产出中国自己的卡介苗和丙种球蛋白。中华人民共和国成立后,成功遏制1950年华北鼠疫大流行,研制出中国的黄热病疫苗。他领导选定的牛痘天体毒种和由他建立的乙醚杀灭杂菌的方法,能在简单条件下制造大量优质牛痘疫苗,为我国提前消灭天花奠定了基础。1961年,采用其研究的方法,中国成功消灭天花病毒,比世界早了16年。

AN APOLOGIA FOR ARTHUR LOVEJOY'S LONG-RANGE APPROACH TO THE HISTORY OF IDEAS

Arthur Lovejoy's long-range approach to the history of ideas is little appreciated and largely abandoned. The list of Lovejoy's supposed sins is long. His critics have charged that, among other things, he treated ideas as timeless entities with essences that are independent of individual thinkers, separate from specific texts, isolated from immediate contexts, and insulated from intellectual change. This article defends Lovejoy against such attacks and argues that his approach is still viable and valuable.     

CONVRT: A COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR THE CONVERSION OF FREE-FIELD DATA TO FIXED-FIELD DATA FORMAT

Abstract

Historians of the U.S. Congress often draw claims from interpretations of legislators’ rhetoric and the outcomes of key votes. In this article, the author tells a cautionary tale: Such strategies ignore the correspondence between roll-call voting on select issues and broader coalitional structures in Congress. He does so by examining contrary positions about a key issue during the New Deal: On the one hand, some researchers claim that reasoned congressional deliberation on the issue of administrative oversight was separate from the prevailing legislative concerns of the day. Other scholars, on the other hand, assert that the prevailing issue dimensions in Congress included administrative oversight. Using a Bayesian measurement method, Ordinary Least Squares, and probit regression, and a novel selection of roll-call data, the author tested these claims, concluding that broader coalitional structures subsumed issues of administration.
