Spiritualism after the Great War

British Spiritualism has attracted a good deal of historicalcomment, but most scholars assume that popular interest in themovement had faded by the close of the First World War. Thisarticle examines Spiritualism and the culture in which it flourishedbetween the wars and in doing so challenges the assumption thatbelief in the supernatural was thoroughly displaced by science-basedsecularism in the twentieth century. Spiritualist egalitarianismreflected and responded to the increasingly democratic valuesof the twentieth century, but more important for Spiritualism'ssuccess was its ability to incorporate a variety of existingsupernatural concepts into its developing and flexible cosmology.The many ways in which traditional supernatural beliefs penetratedeveryday language supplied simultaneously a rich resource forSpiritualist thought and a setting where conversion to Spiritualismcould feel natural and even inevitable.     

现实大国与虚幻大国——抗战时期中国大国地位的二律背反

抗战期间中国国际地位的提高呈现类似二律背反的特点：一方面是中国国际地位的提高,中国在抗日战争和创建联合国等国际事务中发挥了重大作用;另一方面则是这种提高的有限性和表面性,在英、美等西方国家看来只不过是给了中国一个“礼节性”性的位置。这种现实大国与虚幻大国的矛盾与罗斯福的对华战略有直接关系,但主要还是取决于中国自身因素,即中国国力特别是经济力的不足,以及中国在事实上没有摆脱不平等条约体系的束缚。中国人民为中国国际地位的提高付出了巨大而艰辛的努力,但在很大程度上这种地位还是西方大国出于其战略利益的一种给予。只有完全排除这种“给予”因素,中国才能真正获得大国地位。     

在北大荒的原野上

在中国的版图上,那昂首挺立的雄鸡之冠有一片神奇的黑土地,这就是黑龙江省. 半个多世纪以前在黑龙江省境内,有一块面积约五百四十万公顷的大荒原,自古以来,草莽丛生,沼泽密布,野兽出没,人迹罕见.古籍上记载为"漠漠大荒,苦寒绝寒",人称北大荒.这是由松花江、黑龙江和乌苏里江三条大江冲积形成的低平原,是我国最大的淡水沼泽湿地.     

Gettysburg and the Great War

Fifty years after the conclusion of the Civil War, the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania faced the challenge of another war. From 1914 to 1917, the townspeople followed events in Europe closely, becoming vehement supporters of the American entry into the war by April 1917. In 1918, the Gettysburg Battlefield became inundated with American soldiers for the second time in its history, as doughboys trained for overseas service on the site of Pickett’s Charge. This paper considers the way the town of Gettysburg reacted to and mobilized for the First World War. It explores the notion of a ‘forgotten’ American war in a place that is perpetually haunted by war memories.     

考古发现与大禹治水真相

大多数先秦文献都提到了泛滥成灾的洪水,提到大禹治理洪水并划分九州,讲长江、黄河的各处险要为大禹开凿水道留下的遗迹。结合文献与考古资料,本文认为,在当时的生产力水平下,大禹是不可能治理黄河、长江的,所谓大禹治水不过是把济、濮流域的洪涝排泄出去而已,大禹治水的活动范围不出今天的豫东、鲁西南地区。

望孔是长城上最常见、也是最重要的建筑构件之一,其为军事了望目的而设,材质为石质或砖质,多被设置在长城上的敌台、墙台、烽燧、围墙和长城墙体上。本文在实地调查大量长城建筑的基础上,对长城望孔的功用、位置进行了综合分析与探讨,并对不同规格的望孔做了分类整理和归纳。     

大草原的变迁
