Transequatorial propagation of HF and VHF radio waves is placed into three categories according to the physical mechanisms. Specular reflection off the underside of the anomalously dense equatorial F-layer is predictable by ray tracing and limited to frequencies less than about 60 MHz. Multipoint reflection from bottomside irregularities applies for the same radio frequencies but is associated with travelling ionospheric disturbances and spread-F traces on ionograms. This type of TEP may be used as a technique for studying some of the properties of bottomside irregularities. Ducted propagation of VHF waves depends upon high plasma density gradients and occurs along equatorial plasma bubbles during the evening hours. Observations on the ducted VHF mode relate to the behaviour of plasma bubbles.  相似文献

We present an analysis for the reflection or scattering of VLF radio waves by gently sloping parallel ridges that may be well displaced from the great circle path between the transmitter and receiver antennae. It is shown that, under certain conditions, a spatial harmonic of the transverse profile of the terrain will produce a secondary signal that could be not far below the direct or primary signal. Such a resonant scattering mechanism may explain some of Thomson's [(1989), J. atmos. terr. Phys. 51, 339] observations in Dunedin, New ZeaLond.  相似文献

A simplified full-wave method adapted to the propagation of very obliquely incident LF radio waves is developed. For a selected ionosphere model the wave-field structure is calculated inside a horizontally stratified ionosphere and the peculiarities of the reflected field are clearly described. The penetration of the investigated radio waves in the lower ionosphere at noon-time is found to be restricted to a layer several wavelengths thick. The reflected wave is created entirely by the mechanism of partial reflections and the region responsible for its formation is usually below 70 km. The influence of some typical parameters of the electron density profile, as well as the atmospheric pressure and temperature, on the attenuation of the investigated radio waves is demonstrated. It is also found that the reflection at very oblique incidence depends mainly on the height of the bottom of the ionosphere.  相似文献

By comparing electron drift velocities at Jicamarca with corresponding ionograms and VHF radio scintillation records at Huancayo it has been shown that the day-to-day variability in the occurrence of equatorial spread-F irregularities in the post-sunset period depends critically on the time of reversal of the Sq electric field. The field reversal before sunset does not produce any spread-F in the evening hours, while the continuation of the day-time electric field for a couple of hours after sunset at normal strength is a favourable condition for generating spread-F.  相似文献

The results of Booker and Majidiahi (1981) concerning refractive scattering by large-scale irregularities in a phase-changing screen are combined with the theory of diffractive scattering by small-scale irregularities in order to study three intensity scintillation phenomena. The first is the reflection of radio and optical waves from an ocean surface disturbed by a spectrum of water waves. The second is the scintillation of VHP, UHF and SHF radio waves traversing the ionospheric F-region. The third is the scintillation of VHF, UHF and SHF radio waves traversing the solar wind. In each case appropriate values are chosen for the mean square fluctuation of phase, for the outer scale, for the inner scale and for the spectral index. Spectral diagrams are drawn to show how the outer scale, the inner scale, the Fresnel scale, the focal scale, the lens scale and the peak scale vary with a relevant parameter (electromagnetic wave-frequency for the ocean, RMS fractional fluctuation of ionization density for the ionosphere, and distance of closest approach to the Sun for the solar wind). For the ionosphere and the solar wind, multiple refractive scattering by weak irregularities occurs in practice whereas it is strong single scattering that is assumed in the thin-screen theory ; potential consequences of this are discussed qualitatively.  相似文献

It is shown that for radio waves of a particular frequency reflected totally from the ionosphere the effect of refraction as well as reflection can be simulated by an effective reflecting surface. This mirrorlike surface will give the correct angle of arrival and Doppler shift for all radars operating at this frequency. It is theoretically possible for the effective reflecting surface to be folded back on itself, but this is unlikely except for F-region echoes refracted by sporadic E-clouds. If the surface is not folded and exists everywhere, it is always possible to describe its motion and change in terms of wave undulations. Experimental data for F-region echoes show that these wave undulations are very dispersive. However, the matching between the best fitting model and the experimental data is worse than expected for reasons we do not understand.  相似文献

A high frequency radio Doppler experiment was deployed in the Antarctic Peninsula region, centred on Argentine Islands (65°15′S, 64°16′W; L = 2.3), to investigate the morphology and sources of ionospheric disturbances. The experiment consisted of a three-transmitter dual frequency network which permits horizontal and vertical propagation velocities to be estimated over a north-south baseline of 200 km and an east-west baseline of 100 km.A new class of ionospheric disturbance has been observed, in the period range 10 min−1 h. These disturbances are characterised by unusually good correlation between perturbations on all available Doppler signals, but are apparently non—propagating and occur simultaneously at each reflection point. Several of these events display large (2 Hz at about 5 MHz transmitted frequency) Doppler shifts, thus we have labelled them Large Simultaneous Disturbances (LSDs).Criteria for identification of LSDs are established and the analysis of one event is described in detail. The occurrence statistics of the LSDs are presented, including their seasonal and diurnal distributions.There is no clear general relationship between LSDs and local geomagnetic field perturbations. However, examination of the magnetic indices AE and IRC indicates that there is a loose association between the occurrence and amplitude of LSDs and magnetic activity.Several possible mechanisms for the generation of LSDs at middle latitudes are reviewed. The most likely explanation is that high latitude electric fields penetrate to magnetic middle latitudes and drive the ionospheric plasma via the E × B drift.  相似文献

The results of the Intercosmos-19 satellite experiment which receives VLF signals arriving via a magnetospheric path have been examined. The reception zone in the magnetically conjugate region (MCR) has been shown to be centred near the L-value (2.6) of the transmitter of 15 kHZ radio waves. The received signals arrive at the MCR with wave normal angles to the geomagnetic field, ψ, far from the resonance cone. These results indicate an effective amplification of the signal in the magnetosphere by 10–15 dB and effective ducting of VLF waves across the equatorial plane of the magnetosphere.  相似文献

Knowledge of the quiet and disturbed conditions in the propagation medium is essential for quality control of transatmospheric radio signals. This holds equally for the troposphere and the ionosphere. This paper describes a climatology of ionospheric irregularities obtained from observations of celestial radio sources by radio interferometry, i.e. by the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) in The Netherlands. This instrument is located at geomagnetic mid-latitude. All WSRT calibrator observations in the 22-year period 26 June 1970–31 December 1991 have been checked for manifestations of ionosopheric effects. Although seasonal effects are clear, the occurrence and ‘strength’ of ionospheric irregularities show no dependence on solar activity. Assuming that the frequency of occurrence of ionospheric disturbances in spring and autumn are similar, it is found that ‘ionospheric’ winter starts on day 348 ± 3 and all seasons last for 3 months. Medium-scale travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) occur most frequently during the daytime in winter periods. The occurrence of non-periodic irregularities is, however, not a function of time in the day. The daily variation in the amplitude and frequency of the occurrence of the TIDs suggests that the solar terminator and Joule heating near the electrojets do not contribute substantially to their generation. Generation of gravity waves may be caused by winds and tides in the lower thermosphere-mesosphere. This has to be investigated further.On the basis of the available data, a ‘disturbance measure’, indicating to what extent the ionosphere is ‘quiet’, is proposed. The output of this project may be of immediate use for different ionospheric investigations, such as ionospheric modelling and the study of excitation mechanisms for ionospheric irregularities.  相似文献

Quasi-periodic (QP) radio scintillations were observed during (1987) on 244 MHz and 1.5 GHz geostationary satellite transmissions in the southern auroral zone from Davis station (68.6°S, 78.0°E geographic, 74.6°S Aλ) in Antarctica. Three distinct types of OP events were identified, with occurrence times mainly restricted to the period 18-00 MLT. The substantial loss of signal associated with these events appears to be an important factor in determining the reliability of satellite links on 1.5 GHz in auroral regions. Previous observations at mid-latitudes of QP scintillations have noted a preference for large zenith angles and equatorward azimuths. It is demonstrated that a height transition in a densely ionized layer can produce QP scintillations in a manner analogous to a dense column of ionization but at lower ionization densities, as well as demonstrating a zenith angle and azimuthal dependence that is more consistent with observations than a column of ionization. At the occurrence times noted, the raypath may be intersecting the poleward edge of the trough where sporadic-E is a regular feature. QP scintillation events may result when the Es-layer is height modulated by the passage of acoustic-gravity waves originating in the auroral zone.  相似文献

A multifrequency HF Doppler sounder and four spaced receivers were operated near Alma-Ata to form a three-dimensional array of reflection points of HF radio waves. The spacings of reflection points ranged from 5 to 80 km in the vertical and from 30 to 65 km in the horizontal. The purpose of the experiment was to estimate the spatial coherence of travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs). Estimation of the coherence length (the distance at which the coherence falls to e−1) in both vertical and horizontal planes is carried out. The coherence often shows peaks at frequencies exceeding the Brunt-Väisälä frequency. Measurements of the slant coherencies have given the opportunity to study the coherence as a function of orientation.  相似文献

The seasonal variation of the efficiency of solar flares in producing sudden field anomalies (SFAs) on 164 kHz, reported by Letfus and Nestorov (1977), has been investigated for the complete 20th solar cycle. This variation persists with one exception of the solar cycle minimum, when the efficiency considerably decreases. The results of Mitraet al. (1964) giving threshold solar radio flux for an SID occurrence have been found to be incorrect.  相似文献

High frequency waves incident on an overdense ionosphere (i.e. HF < penetration frequency) are known to produce large-scale irregularities with scale sizes of several hundred meters in the F-region of the ionosphere. Three observations of radio star intensity fluctuations at UHF are reported for HF ionospheric modification experiments performed at the Arecibo Observatory. Two observations at 430 MHz and one observation at 1400 MHz indicate that the thin phase screen theory is a good approximation to the observed power spectra. However, the theory has to be extended to include antenna filtering. Such filtering is important for UHF radio star scintillations since the antenna usually has a narrow beam width. HF power densities of less than 37 μW m−2 incident on the ionosphere produce electron density irregularities larger than 13% of the ambient density (at 260 km) having scale sizes of ~510 m perpendicular to the geomagnetic field. The irregularities form within 20–25 s after the HF power is turned on. From the observed power spectra driftvelocities of the irregularities can be estimated.  相似文献

It is shown that the day-time scintillations of VHF radio waves at the equatorial station, Huancayo, are very small, of the order of 1–2 dB peak, during the equatorial electrojet condition. If the event of complete or partial counter-electrojet occurring either on quiet or during disturbed conditions is followed by the occurrence of blanketing type of Es, then only strong day-time scintillations are observed. Counter-electrojet events followed by only the absence of Es are not found to produce any additional scintillations. Thus the day-time VHF scintillations near the magnetic equatorial regions are due to the sharp plasma gradient associated with blanketing type of sporadic E region.  相似文献

Waves are an important process responsible for the initiation and subsequent development of intertidal shore platforms. However, few field studies to date have described wave processes on shore platforms. A field experiment was conducted using an across‐shore array of wave gauges, including a directional sensor, on a near‐horizontal platform at Mahia Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Results show that the platform is very efficient in filtering wave energy at gravity wave frequencies (>0.05 Hz), with 40–80% reduction in wave height measured across the 140 m wide platform. By contrast, infragravity waves are present on the platform and increase in magnitude towards the cliff toe. Directional wave analysis indicates that wave reflection is mainly restricted to infragravity wave frequencies, demonstrating the differences in gravity and infragravity wave behaviour on the platform studied. Results indicate that, under fair weather conditions, the role of waves as an agent of cliff toe erosion is likely to be limited at present, although they are probably important for removing sediments accumulated at the cliff toe. The observed increase in infragravity wave energy towards the cliff toe implies that these long‐period waves may be important geomorphic agents on shore platforms.  相似文献

When the Interkosmos-14 and Interkosmos-19 satellites crossed the region of spatially varying electron concentration in the topside ionosphere adjacent to the high-latitude boundary of the main ionospheric trough, it was discovered that there were simultaneous fluctuations of plasma density, temperature and the amplitudes (Hx and Ey) of the ELF and VLF radio/plasma emissions. The probability characteristics of the naturally perpendicular Hx and Ey fluctuations are analysed. The correlation coefficient R(H, Ey) turned out to be less than 0.6 at frequencies of F ⩽ 4.65 kHz, while at higher frequencies R increases, up to 0.9 at 15 kHz. The following interpretations are proposed:
  1. 1.1. While measuring noise emissions, as a rule a mixture of numerous elementary waves is recorded.
  2. 2.2. At frequencies exceeding the local lower hybrid resonance frequency (in our case fLHR ≈ 5 kHz), a mixture of electromagnetic waves experiencing the influence of the inhomogeneous electron concentration Ne is registered.
  3. 3.3. At frequencies which are lower than the local value fLHR the mixture mainly consists of ELF waves. The wave field has a complicated structure, and the dynamical coherence between electric and magnetic field components is not as simple as at VLF frequencies (f ≈ 15 kHz).
  4. 4.4. It is shown that the wave components for a mixture of electromagnetic and electrostatic waves (for instance a mixture of VLF and lower hybrid frequency waves) have a lower correlation coefficient because the electrostatic waves are unrelated to the electromagnetic waves.
  5. 5.5. The correlation analysis offers an opportunity to detect the presence of waves of various types in the wave mixture.

The Antarctic continent has been modelled as a spherical cap whose pole is coincident with that of the South Pole, which totally absorbs VLF radio waves attempting to propagate over it. The propagation of Omega navigation signals around this model icecap has then been computed using Kirchhoff diffraction theory. Spherical caps extending to 66.5 and 75.5°S have been found to accurately model the signals from Omega La Reunion and Argentina, respectively, received on flights between Christchurch, New Zealand and Scott Base in Antarctica, up to the boundary of the theoretical icecap. These model icecaps were found to be good fits to the boundary of the Antarctic continent, when measured at the 1–1.5 km contour of ice thickness, in the region where the VLF waves diffracted around the icecap. The good agreement obtained between the experimental field strength data and those computed theoretically, using only simple diffraction theory, suggests that coastal refraction plays at most only a secondary role in circumpolar propagation.  相似文献

High power radio waves can modify the ionospheric electron density distribution to produce field aligned plasma irregularities which give rise to the anomalous absorption of HF radio waves. The coefficient of anomalous absorption of a vertically propagated radio wave due to scattering from field aligned irregularities has been calculated, taking into account the effects of the geomagnetic field on electron motions. These results are compared with those of other theoretical models. Furthermore, the scale lengths of field aligned irregularities produced by a high power radio wave during recent high latitude modification experiments have been determined from measurements of the anomalous absorption by means of this theory.  相似文献

Using ray tracing we investigate, on a qualitative level and in the linear approximation, the effects of medium-scale travelling ionospheric disturbances (MS TIDs) arising when powerful HF radio transmitters are operated in conjunction with antenna arrays designed for ionospheric modification (heating) and for radio location of the Moon. It is shown that the HF radio wave focusing effect, arising during the movement of the MS TIDs, can give rise to a strong inhomogeneous and nonstationary modulation of the space-time distribution of the field intensity of a powerful radio transmitter both at heights near the reflection region (in heating experiments) and at the exit from the ionosphere (in radio location of the Moon). The excess of intensity over an unperturbed value for typical parameters of MS TIDs in experiments on ionospheric modification can reach values of hundreds of percent: a ‘spot’ of increased intensity of the wave field can have the size of about 1–10 km, and can move with a velocity close to the MS TID phase velocity.In the case of lunar radio location, the inhomogeneity and nonstationarity of the wave field intensity distribution at the exit from the ionosphere substantially complicates the evaluation of the corresponding distribution on the Moon's surface and the interpretation of the Moon-reflected radio signal characteristics.  相似文献

The reflection of electromagnetic waves by density gradients in a plasma with a magnetic field derived from a scalar potential is studied. Conditions are found for reflection at grazing incidence at a surface S containing field lines. No restriction is placed on the angle between the wave-normal and the field, and account is taken of the curvature of the surface and the anisotropy of the medium. Particular reference is made to whistler-mode waves in the magnetosphere. The minimum electron density enhancement needed for reflection is calculated. Guidance by small-scale irregularities and ‘super whistlers’ (whistlers with upper cut-off above one-half the equatorial electron cyclotron frequency) are briefly discussed.  相似文献
