Legislating fear and the public health in gilded age Massachusetts

Between 1876 and 1881 Massachusetts experienced an outbreak of human rabies (hydrophobia). The entire state--the Governor, the legislature, the State Board of Health, newspapers, and the citizenry and elected officials of every town and city--reacted to the disease. Central to the response was the Commonwealth's legislature--called the General Court. Through public hearings, their own debates, and the passage of legislation, it resolved widespread fear and anger, mediated conflicting concepts of disease, and promoted social solidarity in the face of an epidemic. This article first narrates the General Court's legislative actions; it then examines the conflicting understandings of disease causality; finally, it explores the social and political rituals the legislature drew upon to deal with this public health crisis. Arguing that public health legislation is simultaneously instrumental and symbolic, this article demonstrates that attention to both enriches the study of epidemics, historical and yet to come.     

敦煌《诗经》卷子研读札记二则

本共有两则札记。第一则是《S．10号(毛诗传笺)卷背注音之性质》。S．10号《毛诗传笺》卷背有145字之注音,潘重规认为这是六朝《音隐》类作之遗迹,《英藏敦煌献》据之定名为《毛诗郑笺音隐》。本从卷背注音与正面字的关系上考察,认为卷背注音是抄写人据某种《毛诗音》移录,并非是与正字合成有机整体的《毛诗郑笺音隐》,只是它用以注音的方法与六朝的音隐类作相同而已。第二则是《S．541号写卷的正面与背面》,S．541号写卷的一面抄写有《诗经》,另一面抄写有佛典《因缘心释论开决记》。本否定了以前诸家目录以抄写《诗经》一面为背面的说法,认为抄写有《诗经》的一面应是写卷的正面,而抄有佛典一面的内容则为其背面。

故宫博物院藏“铜镀金嵌石花觚”的修复研究

故宫博物院收藏的铜镀金嵌石五供仅有一套，造型优美，工艺精湛，但其中的一对花觚伤况严重，缺失大量嵌件。修复前，采用X射线CT扫描仪、激光拉曼、X射线荧光光谱仪和红外光谱等方法对花觚结构、嵌件材质和粘接材料进行了检测分析。分析表明，花觚以清宫失传“粘蜡胶”为粘接材料，使用的绿色嵌件为绿松石，靛蓝色嵌件是以钴为着色剂、铅为助熔剂的钾钙玻璃。修复时，结合检测结果选用了传统“粘蜡胶”的现代替代品、绿松石和无铅钴蓝玻璃作为修复材料。同时以“精细分区”“先集中-再慢雕”的方式，准确快捷、有序地完成了700余件嵌件的复原补配。本工作可为大型镶嵌类文物修复提供典型案例。     

Notes on women in the global city: Chicago

As the organizers of an event on women in the global city, we wanted to create a forum exploring the intersections of class, gender and other forms of inequality that fracture ‘global Chicago’. In the panelists' discussion of the intersections of struggles relating to housing, education and environmental justice in Chicago's particular version of the global city, we found evidence of lives disrupted by neoliberal trends, as well as possible sites to contest these disruptions. These struggles reverberate to shape a new urban vision, as the academics and activists assembled for our panel aim not just to work on the local issues of specific women, but to create a city in which work is well compensated, housing is affordable for everyone, schools educate all children well, all neighborhoods are safe both from crime and environmental pollutants, and everyone has the time to fully engage as active citizens of the city.

《抱朴子内篇》是东晋葛洪所著的一部重要道教典籍,保留了较多的魏晋口语成份;对其中的词语用法进行讨论,有助于汉语词汇史研究和辞书编纂。     

中古史书校勘札记

本文从词语研究和训诂的角度对中古史书标点本在校勘方面提出一些看法,共列举十七条,其中有补充标点本校勘的,还有一些是对标点本校勘提出一些不同意见。     

敦煌愿文婉词试解(一)

时空永恒、生命易逝乃是人类互古的悲哀,对死亡的心理抗拒使得人们不愿直言这一词语,而对其进行蔓饰、隐讳,因此使得语言中有大量的委婉语被用于掩饰“死亡”这个人类最基本的客观事实。本文拟通过对敦煌愿文中“死亡”婉称的考察。综合相关文献,探寻其发展变化的轨迹,从而为敦煌愿文词义的研究以及民族心理的探究提供相应的参考依据。     

《续资治通鉴纲目》纂修二题

《续资治通鉴纲目》是明代官方两次敕修的著述 ,该书编篡的成否与明代前期重大的历史事件“土木之变”、“夺门之变”密切相关 ,反映出明景泰、天顺、成化年间的社会环境与当时思想的主流意识。

《后汉书》词语释义献疑

《后汉书》是一部重要的历史文献,从训诂的角度看,无论是古注还是目前通行的辞书,对这部文献词语的释义还都存在着瑕疵。要给不同研究领域的学者者提供更为完善的注本,就需要训诂研究者不断作出努力。《汉语大词典》对《后汉书》中出现的"(莫)适"、"将顺"、"简落"、"随辈"等4条词语的释义,都还不尽如人意。我们对这4条词语的释义力求做到追根溯源,着眼于《后汉书》却不局限于《后汉书》,以使释义验之他文而皆合。于其未详则俟有道。
