Notices of a Remarkable Discovery of Silver Ornaments in a Tumulus at Largo,in Fifeshire

A salt-tax, existing in France since the thirteenth century, led to the construction of bonded warehouses. One such grenier-à-sel was in existence in Honfleur before 1372. By the late seventeenth century, chiefly as the result of the development of herring and cod fisheries, the need had arisen for new larger salt-warehouses. Three were constructed in Honfleur, of which two survive, dated 1670. They were built of stone from the demolished town walls.

The most striking feature of these two buildings is the roof carpentry, the trusses of which are a hybrid form comprising straight rafters, rising from projecting sole-plates and carried on the backs of curved principals springing from a point high up the walls to reach collar level. Above the collars rise king-posts supporting both ridge purlins and under-ridge purlins. This structure may be considered to fall within the cruck tradition.

On the Subject of Historical Geography (Landscape and Ethnos,III)

The author develops a methodology of historical geography revolving around the relationship between an ethnos, or ethnic community, and the “encompassing landscape.” He finds that under the conditions of the nomadic stockherding peoples of the steppe, where this relationship is most clearly expressed, the nomads become an inseparable part of the landscape, together with plant and animal life.

汉代是封建的中央专制集权国家 ,随着生产力的发展 ,豪强大土地所有制形成 ,使汉代中央专制集权分散、下移 ,而世族地主地位不断上升 ,权力增加 ,出现庄园经济。这完全是汉代土地制度在生产力发展中的必然结果。诸葛亮仅看到豪强经济给汉王朝财政、兵员方面造成了危机 ,却看不到汉代赋税制已远远落后于社会生产力发展 ,违背经济运动客观规律 ,抑制世族豪强地主发展 ,五出北伐匡扶已极具奢侈性和寄生性的汉室 ,最终灭亡是不可避免的。

A scientific perspective, aimed at removing psychiatric diagnosis from dependence on subjective evaluations, is corrected by the diagnosis of a mood disorder. His unipolar mania of late onset is a syndrome, the sine qua non of bipolar disorder, in this instance complicated by the toxicity of quinine, antimony, and purgatives.

This article explores the various problems associated with dating brickwork. It does so by combining information gathered from measuring surviving buildings with a survey of recent literature on the subject. Focusing on the seventeenth century, it seeks to show how the various techniques used in making and laying bricks might have changed in the period and to what extent these can be used to provide a tentative dating of surviving fabric. It also outlines the limitations of any such analysis, calling into question various existing recording methods.

III 'Gender' is not enough: the need for a feminist consciousness

In the final commentary, Cynthia Enloe thinks again about Gillian Youngs' question: why do many IR academics find it so difficult to take feminist analysis seriously? She argues there are two fears: the first, for men, concerns how their own relationships with masculinity are affecting what they see as a ‘serious’ topic of investigation; the second is the fear of appearing feminized by colleagues making a judgement on the topic's seriousness. Cynthia Enloe argues that ‘gender’ alone is insufficient for transforming IR into a more reliable and useful discipline. What is needed is a feminist consciousness informing work on gender.

Discussion is directed both at the organization and development of the internal road or street network and at the way in which the individual building types and their associated features are arranged within the framework so created. From such evidence, broad morphological trends can be recognized within the ‘Small Town’ range.
