L’Histoire, la Fable et le Fabuleux Analyse de la notion de fabuleux

Paul Hazard has clearly shown the concomitance ofThe Crisis of the European consciousness in various domains, under diverse aspects and diverse interrogations. This crisis, these new issues which arise concern as well the concept of temporality which was then in vogue. This article seeks to study its emergence through a specific question which concerns the status and the significance to be given fables and myths which we have inherited from Antiquity. Thanks to the studies by abbé Anselme, Fontenelle, Nicolas Fréret, the chevalier de La Barre and Lévesque de Burigny of the notion of the marvelous, as found in fables, we can better grasp the development of an historical concept.     

L’eclatement de l’offre politique: Les elections europeennes de juin 1999

The European elections in France in June 1999 were held in a context dominated by the confused state of national political parties, and against the background of the continuing Kosovo crisis. The elections reflected to a considerable degree the fragmentary nature of party politics in France. The Left is composed of a coalition of diverse parties, including the Greens (Verts), while the Right is in disarray, both in the mainstream and on the margins. This article provides an analytical overview of the campaign and results.     

‘Vienen de gente de mucha discreción y entendimiento:’ ethnic identity,ambivalence, and colonial discourses in Diego Muñoz Camargo’s Descripción de la ciudad y provincia de Tlaxcala

Diego Muñoz Camargo's Descripción de la ciudad y provincia de Tlaxcala (1585) is a well-known reference on the history of Tlaxcala that scholars have studied to better understand Tlaxcalan participation in the conquest of Tenochtitlan, its relationship with the Spanish Crown, and the author's selective approach to local history. Often, these approaches present the historian as acculturated or Hispanized because of his celebration of the Spanish or criticism of local religious practices. This article complicates such approaches in order to show the complex ways that the author approached issues of cultural difference. Examining Muñoz Camargo's recourse to colonial discourses of morality, I argue that the author molds and tailors these discourses to fit local Tlaxcalan circumstances. In doing so, I show how he humanizes Tlaxcala's ruling elite while exemplifying the inherent ambivalence of moral authority in Colonial New Spain.     

‘Travail,famille, patrie’ dans L'écume des jours de Boris Vian

Having historically lagged behind most Western countries on matters relating to disability, France now seems poised on the brink of a new era in the provision for, and attitudes to, people with disabilities. This article begins with a brief examination of the political context of this recent change, including the new anti-discrimination law of 2005, the positions of both Chirac and Sarkozy, and the recent work of Julia Kristeva. Since one of Kristeva's main aims is to change the way in which disability is seen, this article goes on to examine in detail the photographic work of Delphine Censier, a woman with disabilities who is also concerned with changing perceptions of disability, and making possible a new relationship between people with and without impairments. Censier's work—which pictures her in lingerie and in sexually suggestive poses—appears problematic, at first glance, from both a feminist and a disability theory perspective. Using the work of US disability theorists such as Rosemarie Garland Thomson and Robert McRuer, however, this article argues that Censier's work in fact self-consciously performs disabled sexuality in a nuanced and insistently non-normative manner and, in so doing, goes a long way to fostering the new perspectives on disability that Kristeva's own work, alone, could not.

En ce qui concerne les attitudes envers le handicap, la France a toujours été considérée comme étant en retard par rapport à d'autres pays occidentaux. Pourtant, une nouvelle époque semble actuellement se préparer dans ce domaine. Cet article examine d'abord le contexte politique de cette nouvelle attitude, évoquant notamment la loi de 2005 sur l'égalité des chances; les positions et de Chirac et de Sarkozy, et le travail récent de Julia Kristeva. L'un des buts principaux de Kristeva est de changer la façon dont on regarde les personnes en situation de handicap. Ainsi, cet article examine en détail le travail photographique de Delphine Censier, une femme en situation de handicap qui veut, comme Kristeva, changer le regard des ‘valides’ vis-à-vis du handicap, et qui veut aussi imaginer de nouveaux rapports entre ceux qui sont en situation de handicap et ceux qui ne le sont pas. Dans ses photographies, Censier porte de la lingerie et se montre volontairement séduisante. Considérées sous un aspect féministe, ou bien selon les principes de ce que le monde anglo-saxon appelle ‘disability theory’, ces photographies présentent des problèmes d'interprétation. Pourtant, à l'aide du travail des théoriciens américains Rosemarie Garland Thomson et Robert McRuer, cet article se propose de démontrer que le travail de Censier est performatif, qu'il interroge, consciemment, les normes sexuelles du monde ‘valide’ dans le but de lui montrer que sa perception de la ‘sexualité handicapée’ devrait être beaucoup plus nuancée. De cette manière, l'?uvre de Censier ajoute une autre perspective à la critique de Kristeva, suscitant de nouvelles interprétations ‘visuelles’ de la personne handicapée.     

Portrait de l’animal comme sujet

De nombreux philosophes anglo-saxons de tradition analytique nient qu’un animal puisse penser, ou qu’on puisse accéder à sa subjectivité. Nous développons une réponse alternative. La légitimité d’une évaluation de l’intelligence de l’animal repose d’abord sur une familiarité acquise à son contact au cours d’une histoire partagée. Elle est propre à celui qui vit avec un animal mais aussi à l’expert qui a acquis une connaissance de l’animal à la suite d’une pratique professionnelle élaborée. C’est parce que nous interagissons avec l’animal comme s’il était un sujet que nous sommes prêts à lui accorder une intelligence susceptible de rendre intelligibles nos relations avec lui. L’intelligence d’un même animal n’est pas fixée une fois pour toutes. Elle est en partie dépendante des dispositifs humains dans lesquels elle se trouve impliquée. La question d’une véritable zoologie se pose, qui étudie l’intelligence du vivant dans la perspective des sciences sociales aussi bien que dans celle de la biologie.     

Vox populi,vox Dei: Catalina de San Juan, ‘la Niña Santa’ de la Angelópolis (India, 1605? – Puebla de los Ángeles,México, 1688)

Este artículo contribuye a destacar el capital simbólico que encarnó en la Colonia la vida de Catalina de San Juan, natural del reino del Gran Mogol e hija espiritual de la Compañía de Jesús. Si bien la autora profundiza en la figura hagiográfica de la beata y aclara algunos errores esbozados por la crítica, su aporte principal radica en las Actas de Cabildo de Puebla del siglo XVII. Estos documentos son prueba fehaciente de la concertada participación de las autoridades civiles en lo que se esperaba fuera el proceso testimonial para una pronta causa de beatificación. Aunque la Santa Sede no la canonizara, Catalina de San Juan fue proclamada santa por un pueblo que vio en ella los Prodigios de la Omnipotencia, glosados teatralmente por la pluma de sus confesores. La luz que muchos atestiguaron ver al final de sus días ilumina por siempre la historia novohispana con el misterio de su leyenda.
