Mr. Jay Rides Circuit

Several years ago, when two John Jay Homestead ¹ colleagues, Louise V. North and Janet M. Wedge, and I contemplated compiling and editing a book of correspondence between John Jay and his wife Sarah Livingston Jay, we agreed that our goal would be to chronicle the personal lives of the Jays in the tumultuous times during and after the American Revolution. In the process of choosing the letters for The Selected Letters of John Jay and Sarah Livingston Jay , published in 2005, we came to a true appreciation of the Jays' commitment toward their country.

The Bordesley Abbey Project has widened its horizons as it has developed, linking the core excavation of the abbey church with archaeological fieldwork, both in the outer court and beyond the precinct boundary on the abbey's granges, and with architectural and documentary research. Exceptional preservation is the key to Bordesley's importance—the survival of its precinct as a complete set of earthworks and of the unusually deep and complex stratification, yielding data and artefacts which are both very rich and extensive, and very well stratified, within a finely divided chronology. This review is a preliminary attempt to integrate the different elements, and to highlight the potential of the data now and for the future.

在天津史学界,提起顾道馨——“顾老”,可以说人人都会伸出拇指,他给人留下了令人羡慕的口碑。顾道馨先生是天津市历史博物馆的研究人员,多年来,为博物馆事业的发展建树丰厚,同时在地方史与民俗学界更是多有贡献。可就在几个月前,深受我们大家尊敬与爱戴的顾道馨先生却匆匆离我们而去。

Abstract

Quantitative methods of content analysis have become established in most subfields of political science, but remain relatively unutilized in studies of political theory, despite the exclusive focus of that subfield on textual sources. This article develops a variation of content analysis—termed usage analysis—and employs it to resolve a standing debate in scholarship on Cicero's political theory regarding the synonymy of the major Latin terms for the state (civitas and res publica). The resulting distinction between these concepts then informs an exposition of Cicero's ideal state not as the Roman Republic itself or the mixed constitution alone, but as a universal, everlasting political society supported by justice, a mixed constitution, and active citizenship.

郑和与江苏--江苏郑和遗迹考述

郑和七下西洋，是世界航海史上的伟大壮举。在郑和60余年的生涯中，除了行进于远航西洋的海上之外，其余大部分时间都是任南京乃至于江苏度过的。不仅如此，这里还是郑和下西洋的决策地和始发地，是最早感受到和认识到郑和下西洋成就的地方，保存的郑和遗迹数量最多，也较为系统和完整，作为郑和下西洋的历史见证，具有重要的历史化价值（图一）。今值郑和首航西洋600周年之机，为缅怀这位伟大的中国航海家和外交家，谨将江苏境内与郑和有关的遗迹作一考述，以志纪念。     

评耿云志先生的《黎昔非先生与〈独立评论〉》一文

《安徽史学》2 0 0 3年第 1期所刊登的耿云志先生《黎昔非先生与〈独立评论〉》一文 ,明显存在至少三个方面的问题 :一是偏离文章主题与中心 ,意在维护胡适 ;二是以己意曲解、推测史实而为胡适辩解 ;三是有不符合学术规范之处。     

张定一同志逝世

本刊讯中央民族大学藏学研究所原副所长张定一同志因病医治无效,于2010年8月17日在北京逝世,享年86岁。8月20日,张定一同志遗体告别仪式在北京八宝山革命公墓举行,中央统战部、国家民委、中国藏学研究中心、中央民族大学的领导和张定一同志的亲属、生前故交、家乡代表参加了告别仪式。
