Drowned Memories: The Submerged Places of the Winnemem Wintu

This article is a brief overview of an instance where landscape inundation has disconnected culture from place. The Winnemem Wintu, a Native American tribe in Northern California, had most of their ancestral landscape along the McCloud River submerged by the construction of Shasta Dam just after World War II. The tribe’s remaining traditional cultural properties are under continual threat of loss and/or destruction, leaving the tribe’s ability to practice traditional ceremonies crippled by legal battles and fights against the continual assertion of United States hegemonic power over tribal cultural identity. As part of archaeological research on these submerged places, the tribe’s spiritual leader, Caleen Sisk-Franco, and Tribal Headman, Mark Franco, spoke with the author about these threats and how their culture must adapt to meet them.     

Playing the Ghost: Ghost Hoaxing and Supernaturalism in Late Nineteenth-Century Victoria,Australia

This article employs a Jungian analytical perspective in its exploration of the phenomenon of ghost hoaxing in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century colonial Victoria, Australia, as observed through its reportage in the print media of the era.

Drowned and deserted: a submerged prehistoric landscape in the Solent, England

A submerged landscape containing worked flint tools has been found at—11m OD in the western Solent. This paper reviews coastal sites in northern Europe and suggests that many similar sites should exist around the coast of southern England; as a result of isostatic shifts and eustatic fluctuations many coastal sites of the Mesolithic will now be submerged. A need has been identified to locate, protect and record submerged sites before they are lost to erosion or development, for which outline proposals are suggested.

Landscapes of the Ghost Dance: A Cartography of Numic Ritual

Recent historical and ethnographic research indicates that the study of ritual behavior could be greatly enhanced by combining parameters of place and landscape use with interpretation of material culture. This strategy is especially useful for identifying the archaeological record of ritual among societies that incorporated topographic features and natural resources into their liturgical order. In this article we apply a behavioral framework to the study of Numic ritual technologies. By intergrating ethnographic and historic data on the geography, practice, and material culture of the nineteenth-century Nevada Ghost Dance, we demonstrate how this framework helps to determine the configuration of a ritual place and its position relative to other ritual and nonritual places.     

从孤魂野鬼到神灵的转化--闽南"私人佛仔"的初步研究

一、引言 所谓"私人佛仔",是指闽南一带的居民对某些神品较低的神灵的主位称呼,这种神灵主要供奉在厢房、内室或僻屋中,很少进入民间供奉正神的厅堂正中,而且他们主要是由住在该内室的人敬奉的,并与该内室的人有一些千丝万缕的关系,因为,他们主要是由这家过去夭折或凶死的亲人转化而来的.私人佛仔过去被称为"夫人妈",①但是用"夫人妈"来概括指称这类神灵是有些问题的.因为,在闽南,"夫人妈"是对某神灵的夫人的一种尊称,凡是神灵的夫人均可以用此称之.换言之,夫人妈是专对女神而言的.     

山西雁北地区当代冥婚现象研究

冥婚作为一种民间习俗在中国社会中延续了数千年之久而至今犹存,它在汉文化各地域的普遍实践中呈现出各自的不同特点,因此十分有必要对冥婚开展区域性研究。本文结合文献研究进行了深入的田野考查以及口述访谈,对山西省雁北地区当代冥婚习俗的传统渊流、民间传说、当代仪式和过程等做了细致地描述,并在此基础上探讨了该地区当代冥婚大量盛行的原因和变化趋势及新型特征。
