Manx Folk-Lore and Superstitions. II

This paper explores the emergent legend of Colton Harris-Moore, the Barefoot Bandit, to locate its place within American folk legendry. Analysis builds off the work of Eric Hobsbawm and Graham Seal, highlighting how folklorists might re-envision classifications and representations of banditry in constantly changing yet specific populations and environments.     

Harvest Customs

Motivated by a religiously-based defensive credulity, the accounts of apparitions recorded by Edmund Jones (1702–93) are heavily coloured by his personal religious beliefs. One of the best examples of this is his account of the Pwcca'r Trwyn, which differs widely from other versions of the tale. Through close investigation of Jones's telling, greater insight can be gained into his own folkloristics and the reluctance of later writers to use him as a source.     

Speaking from the Shadows: Sophia Morrison and the Manx Cultural Revival

The true extent of national and cultural revival in the Isle of Man, 1880-1920, is only now beginning to be understood. The present paper focuses on a previously marginalised figure, the folklorist and activist Sophia Morrison. Her work exposes the importance of folklore in providing impetus for the revival movement in the absence of a strong literary tradition for Manx Gaelic. Morrison's ability to move between social circles sets her apart from other antiquarians, and she emerges as a key figure in the Manx language movement.
