Abraham's sacrifice. Very early on, this Biblical theme became the subject of a number of representations who did not vary much, having a rich and precocious theology as their base: the sacrifice of Isaac prefiguring that of Christ on the Cross. The anecdotal development is one of the major variants. The dramatization of the scene in miniatures, especially noticeable from the 13th century onward, enriched the stylistic effects. The social changes that took place in medieval western Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries (the place of children, attitudes to death...) provoked a final evolution. The previous embellishments were reorganized to take into account the preoccupations of the day.     

The nineteenth century Gazette Corn Returns from East Anglian markets

The official Corn Returns for individual market towns, published weekly in the London Gazette, present an opportunity for examining the activity of English country grain markets during the nineteenth century. This paper describes this currently neglected source and considers its credibility and value, using records for East Anglia as a case study.The paper is set against an account of the methods employed in collecting the Returns and a discussion of problems of reliability particularly in the quantity series. The annual quantity series for wheat and barley from 1820 to 1864 for nine East Anglian markets are then examined using methods of time series factor analysis. It is argued that the similarities in these series demonstrate a high degree of consistency and therefore credibility.The general fluctuations in wheat and barley sales in these East Anglian markets are related to production, but differences between the various markets are analysed in terms of a hypothesis that sets the farmers' decisions as to where and to whom to sell the grain within the context of the general farm economy, relating them to the balance between the sale and carriage price for grain on the one hand and the need for and cost of farm inputs on the other. The paper ends with suggestions of other areas of research where these Corn Returns could prove valuable.

DISPERSED REFERENCES to weights and balances in England dating to the late Saxon period (9th to 11th centuries) are collated and assessed. A classification of types is presented, and comparisons drawn with Irish and Scandinavian material.     

Kyordyughen Site,Ymyiakhtakh Culture,Yakutia: An Interpretation of Burial Rite

A series of radiocarbon dates for the Late Neolithic burial at Kyordyughen, Yakutia, support its association with the Ymyiakhtakh culture. The article proposes a new interpretation of the burial rite in the context of the site. Possible reasons for the disruption of the burial are presented. The presence of the dismembered remains of another body may indicate the practice of human sacrifice. The emergence of warriors as a social group is discussed, and the question is raised as to whether such a group might have been present in the Late Neolithic societies of northeast Asia on the basis of evidence favoring social differentiation with regard to military status.     

Local knowledge is required: a rhythmanalytical approach to the late Mesolithic and early Neolithic of the East Anglian Fenland, UK

This is a paper about blurring the boundaries between people, land and water in the past and of appreciating the importance of the wider environment in our accounts of prehistory. Maritime approaches to time/space are shown to offer new ways of looking at how people engage with the world around them. Informed by these approaches, and building on Lefebvre’s concepts of lived space and rhythm, current tensions within archaeology between cartesian and phenomenological approaches to the past will be shown to be unconstructive. These issues are all addressed in relation the late Mesolithic and early Neolithic of the East Anglian Fenland. Here a rhythmical, maritime approach will be shown to offer us a subtly different view of life during this period.     

河北省迁安市开发区金代墓葬发掘清理报告

1996年春,在河北省迁安市北开发区清理发掘了三座金代墓葬,其中M1、M3的随葬晶非常丰富。M3出土了银器、玛瑙器、铜镜等珍贵文物,其葬式在中国北方实属罕见。从三座墓葬的布局来看,应为家族墓地。这次清理发掘,为研究金代历史提供了重要的实物资料。     

试谈北方民族的丧葬类型

生活在不同历史时期的北方各民族 ,其丧葬形式极具特色。这也是不同社会发展阶段、不同生活环境与生产方式的反映 ,从中体现了一个民族的信仰与习惯。同时 ,由于各民族间的相互影响 ,在丧俗上也有一定的共性。     

East Meets West: An East Indian Coin in the Western Colonies

In 1823, the Ontario House, a hotel and tavern, was built near Niagara Falls, Canada. In addition to providing a location for travelers and tourists to drink and lodge, Ontario House, like many other establishments, billeted soldiers when the need arose. The 2012 excavation of the midden and features of the Ontario House produced a large assemblage of artifacts including ceramics, buttons, numismatics, and military accoutrements. Of particular interest is an East Indian coin, found in the natural topsoil, which can be associated with the 67th Regiment of Foot’s brief occupation of Ontario House in 1841. This paper addresses the significance of this coin and associated finds in regards to the global movement of the regiment and the socio-political context of Ontario House within regional history.     

陕西地区腰坑葬俗研究

现有资料表明,陕西地区腰坑葬俗最早发现在耀县北村,时代约在商代早期偏晚阶段。同一时期,河南地区的腰坑葬俗已经开始由中原向黄河东西两岸地区伸展,传统的殷商文化借助渭河之便进入陕西,并把腰坑墓这一葬俗带给关中地区,乃至甘肃陇东地区。由此,全面了解腰坑葬俗在陕西关中、河南豫中、甘肃陇东的联系与发展,对揭开当时社会的真实历史面貌以及民族的变迁演变提供了某些线索和资料。     

浅议水坑环境出土彩绘陶器的保护

在长江中游地区,由于地下水位较高,地下文物埋藏环境常见这种类型：即文物长年浸泡在封闭严密且水位较为稳定的地下水环境。这种埋藏环境中的文物,出土时保存状况往往相对较好,其中彩绘陶器的彩绘层在出土时大多保存完好、色泽鲜艳。但由于颜料层中的胶接物质却早已失去粘性,即使较轻微的碰触,也很容易使之脱落。不仅如此,出土之后,随着保存环境的突变,伴随着陶器中水分的挥发,颜料层也会随之开始出现一系列病害,如变色、酥粉、脱落。因此,选择适宜加固饱水彩绘陶器的加固材料在出土后尽快对彩绘层进行加固就变得尤为重要。本文尝试从彩绘陶器颜料的组成、文物埋藏环境、出土后的环境因素三个方面来分析水坑环境出土彩绘陶器出现的各种病害的原因,并结合笔者在实际工作中的体会,提出几点关于水坑环境出土彩绘陶器的保护方法。     

虢国墓地墓葬制度述论

虢国墓地位于三门峡市区北部的上村岭一带 ,面积 32 .45万平方米 ,墓葬总数在 5 0 0座以上 (含车马坑和祭祀坑 )。 1 95 6- 1 95 7年 ,黄河水库考古工作队曾在墓地南部发掘清理出各类墓葬2 34座及 3座车马坑 1座马坑 1。 1 990年春起 ,考古部门又在墓地北部进行了第二次发掘勘探 ,共发现各类墓葬、车马坑和祭祀坑 30 0座以上 ;至1 999年 ,发掘清理墓葬 1 8座及车马坑 4座 ,马坑2座 2 。前后时隔 30多年的两次发掘 ,不仅使我们对虢国墓地的全貌和性质有了一个较完整的认识和了解 ,而且丰富了人们对周代宗法和墓葬制度的认识。现拟利用这两批…
