The work of the Irish or Iro-Scottish missioneries on the continent of Europe in the sixth to eighth centuries is well known. An attempt is made here to show how the characteristic design of early Celtic churches found its way partly via Bavaria, where for example the Irishman Virgil became bishop of Salzburg in the mid-eight century, into Moravia, along with other Iro-Scottish cultural influences, a century or so before the well-known Christianizing mission launched into that area from Byzantium by the two brothers SS Cyril and Methodius, in 863.

Reconceptualizing Resistance in the Historical Archaeology of the British Isles: An Editorial

The present resonates with the harmonics of past events. Our archaeologies, because they deal with the everyday materiality of life, should not neglect to concern themselves with the domination of past people, since many similar forms of oppression persist. Moreover, we should consider the resistance to such domination. Rather than seeing resistance as simply reactive a problem which has generated much criticism—we can reconceptualize it to encompass a more nuanced understanding of the volition and agency of people in inferior positions of power. This lends new strength to the role of archaeologists in representing historical narratives of resistance.     

A study of meteor radar winds from two locations in the British Isles

Winds and tides have been measured by a two-station meteor radar system which has increased spatial resolution compared with single station radars used in the past. Narrow radar beams, pointing SW from Sheffield (53.5°N, 1.6°W) and 30°N of W from Shrivenham (51.5°N, 1.6°W), are arranged to converge over the U.K. MST radar site near Aberystwyth, thus defining a unique atmospheric volume in which meteor wind components are simultaneously measured from the two radar sites. The resultant ‘true’, or local, wind vector is compared with the spatially averaged vector obtained with the aid of beams pointing SW and NW from Sheffield only. It is found that the ‘true’ and averaged tidal winds are in good agreement, as expected from their large scale sizes, and that the main advantages of the dual station technique lie in the resolution of a small scale structure such as that related to internal atmospheric gravity waves. By the simultaneous deployment of two-station meteor radar, MST radar and LIDAR, such waves may now be studied through a large vertical section of the atmosphere in a geographically localized area.

现代英国保守主义的嬗变

作为一种意识形态,保守主义诞生于柏克对法国大革命的反思。自19世纪初以来,英国保守党在思想和政策上发生了几次重大的转变。皮尔为保守党确立了基本原则,狄斯雷利则推行托利民主,为现代保守主义增添了新的内容。二战后的新形势使保守党左翼进一步加大了国家对社会经济生活的干预,而撒切尔主义则回到狄斯雷利以前的保守主义。保守党在意识形态上的这种灵活性是其能够一直延续至今的一个重要原因。
