视觉文化时代的视觉困惑

在视觉已经成为当代文化的媒介平台时,视觉文化给我们带来了前所未有的满足,但这种视觉又使我们陷入了深深的困惑并导致一系列生存环境的改变,如何在这种文化语言的转型中把握机遇与挑战,将是我们面临的严峻现实。     

Vision and visualization

The art of visual communication is not restricted to the fine arts. Scientists also apply art in communicating their ideas graphically. Diagrams of anatomical structures, like the eye and visual pathways, and figures displaying specific visual phenomena have assisted in the communication of visual ideas for centuries. It is often the case that the development of a discipline can be traced through graphical representations and this is explored here in the context of concepts of visual science. As with any science, vision can be subdivided in a variety of ways. The classification adopted is in terms of optics, anatomy, and visual phenomena; each of these can in turn be further subdivided. Optics can be considered in terms of the nature of light and its transmission through the eye. Understanding of the gross anatomy of the eye and visual pathways was initially dependent upon the skills of the anatomist whereas microanatomy relied to a large extent on the instruments that could resolve cellular detail, allied to the observational skills of the microscopist. Visual phenomena could often be displayed on the printed page, although novel instruments expanded the scope of seeing, particularly in the nineteenth century.     

A Scandinavian Relief Brooch: Artistic Vision and Practical Method Combined

THIS PAPER considers the craftspeople that created ornamental metalwork, the contexts in which they operated, and the communication they had with their contemporaries. The study focuses on the Dalem brooch, a 6th-century Scandinavian relief brooch from Norway. By examining an object which expresses a complex symbolic language through intricate and demanding crafting processes, we emphasise the importance of considering both ornamentation and technology when studying these exquisite dress items. The brooch was manufactured from a variety of materials and decorated in Salin Style 1. This ornamentation, with its religious, political and social connotations, was completely integrated into the object from its conception. A combination of new and old designs indicates that the craftspeople purposefully created and transformed motifs for use on the brooch, operating within a creative, cross-disciplinary and intellectual centre of expertise.

In Industrial Eden:A Chinese Capitalist Vision,Brett Sheehan offers an insightful portrait of what it meant to do business in China during the Republican period (1912-49) and the early years of the People's Republic of China (PRC).Sheehan's narrative focuses on two ambitious industrialists,Song Chuandian and his son Song Feiqing,their efforts to build an industrial empire,their visions of industrial modernity,and how they navigated the turbulent political waters of the first half of the twentieth century.     

高远的学术视野缜密的考据功夫--孙诒让《札迻》读后

从学术史的角度来读孙诒让的《札适》,可以看出孙氏学术视野的广阔和考据工夫的缜密。孙氏对乾嘉学派和考据学的认识与我们今天的理解有很大的不同。他是把“究其微惜,通其大例”作为乾嘉学派的主旨的．而天历箅之学他也作为考据学的一个组成部分。这些都是值得思考的。     

Vision and the dimensions of nerve fibers

Vision provided the obvious source of determining the dimensions of nerve fibers when suitable achromatic microscopes were directed at neural tissue in the 1830s. The earlier microscopes of Hooke and Leeuwenhoek were unable to resolve such small structures adequately. However, it was not Hooke's microscope that led to an estimate of the dimensions of nerve fibers, but his experiments on the limits of visual resolution; he determined that a separation of one minute of arc was the minimum that could normally be seen. Descartes had earlier speculated that the retina consisted of the ends of fibers of the optic nerve, and that their size defined the limits of what could be seen. Estimates of the diameters of nerve fibers were made on the basis of human visual acuity by Porterfield in 1738; he calculated the diameters of nerve fibers in the retina as one 7,200th part of an inch (0.0035 mm), based on the resolution of one minute as the minimum visible. In the same year, Jurin questioned the reliability of such estimates because of variations in visual resolution with different stimuli.
