OVER THE WATER AND ACROSS THE DESERT – TRANS-SAHARAN CONTACTS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN WORLD IN THE 6TH AND 5TH CENTURY BC

After presenting the picture of Africa in Mediterranean minds of antiquity,this paper seeks by ways of a combined interpretation of the periplus of Hanno and Herodotus’logos on the Nasamones to investigate Carthaginian and Greek knowledge about the trans-Saharan routes und contacts of the 6th and 5th century BC.Further comparison with recent archaeological discoveries from the Iron Age in Senegal,the Niger Bend and Lake Chad illustrate that these sites were the destination of travellers from the North and that universal geographical theses concerning the course of the river Nile provided fundamental patterns of explanation and orientation for ancient explorers.Finally,it is considered why any further explorations both of the Inner African hinterland and the western seaway around the African continent were suspended in Antiquity.     

The Spring Festival of Akaška / Nunal Celebrated by the Southern Udmurts in the Late 19TH–EARLY 20TH Century

The article describes the traditional spring festival of Aka?ka celebrated by the Southern Udmurts. The content and form of the festival indicate that some elements were borrowed from the Turkic world. While some borrowed elements have their counterparts in the ritual practices of the Turkic-speaking peoples of the Middle Volga region and the Urals, the sources of other borrowed elements can be found in the Turko-Mongolian environment of southern Siberia and the Altai.

Editors of the Journal China＇s Tibet joined the book fair from Oct. 20 to 24 with their latest books and journals, includ- ing Thangka Paintings of the Tibetan Oral Epic King Gesar, Eternal Mountain, Tibetan People and Tibetan Stories in the 20th Century, Witness the Brilliant Moment on the Snow Land - Tibet in 1950-60s, Tibetan Rich-Color Paints - A Collection ofTen Artists in Tibet. After the book fair, editors presented books and journals on exhibition to the Serbian National Library and Novi Sad City Library and held cultural exchanges with members from the libraries and the local publishing companies.
