The Claudian Invasion Campaign Reconsidered

This paper attempts to build on Hind's hypothesis (1989) that the Roman invasion of AD 43 took place in Sussex, by examining the implications for the conquest campaign. It is suggested that the usual tactics of the Roman army and the size of the invading army are not consistent with the standard invasion campaign theory, in particular the events leading up to the so-called battle of the Medway. Other aspects of the evidence available to us are also inconsistent with the standard theory but can be explained in terms of a Sussex landing. The result is to offer further support for Hind's hypothesis.

Abstract

Violence and warfare have generally played a peripheral role in studies of fifth millennium B.C. farming communities of the Lower Danube. This paper aims to reconsider the archaeological evidence of violent conflict in chalcolithic north-eastern Bulgaria with the notion that inter-group conflict was an essential part of prehistoric social life. The focus here is on the role of warfare within the context of small permanent settlements, essentially settlement mounds, from their establishment around 5000 B.C. to their alleged violent end at the transition between the fifth and fourth millennia B.C.

A novel typology of media clusters

Is the clustering of audio-visual companies in London’s Soho really the same as the clustering of Berlin’s new media industry? The media cluster approach has gained a lot of attention not only in academia, but also in political discourse. But, as appealing as the media cluster concept is, one of the most fundamental issues is the comparability of the phenomenon. This article tackles this issue and an analysis of 43 case studies has been conducted. The case studies have been grouped to find a new typology for media clusters. The research revealed six different types: The Creative Region, the Giant Anchor, the Specialized Area, the Attracting Enabler, the Real Estate and the Pooling Initiative. The typologies showed that they distinguish especially in their geographical scale and specialization in media activities, while at the same time cluster types can be found in the same area. They are driven by four rationales: agglomeration, urbanization, localization economies and artificial formation.     

惠洪词补辑十四首

《全宋词》收有惠洪词二十一首,但近日笔者研读惠洪的《石门文字禅》,发现被漏收的惠洪词多达十四首。本文对漏收的惠洪词进行了补辑,对漏收的原因进行了辨析。     

《烟霞小说》考

丛书<烟霞小说>为明人辑刊,收书13种,流传甚稀.清道光初,黄丕烈获得该丛书中的一册--<说听>四卷,但"首尾叶皆不全",又云:"此则<烟霞小说>本,近时此书不甚广布,故无可钞补,稍为黏补,以便展观."(<荛圃藏书题识>卷六)连藏书大家黄氏也找不到全本,足见其珍罕.     

尼赫鲁对中国抗战的贡献

尼赫鲁对中国抗战做出了重大贡献包括,谴责日本侵略中国,抨击蒋介石对日不抵抗,批判英国对日绥靖,倡导以实际行动支持中国抗战,访问浴血抗战的中国,身处逆境依旧不忘支持中国。尼赫鲁之所以同情和支持中国抗战,有其深刻而博大的理论基础和思想渊源,即基于世界反帝反法西斯事业,基于中国在亚洲和世界的特殊地位,基于中国和印度之间的传统友谊,基于印度自身的利益。     

李仙得与日本第一次侵台

1874年日本以琉球难船事件为由出兵"征台",拉开了近代日本侵略中国的序幕。此事件与美国人李仙得有着密切的关系。李仙得时受雇于日本政府,充任"准二等出仕"。他向日本政府提出几十件备忘录及意见书,教唆日本政府接受台湾番地为无主之地的主张,并帮助副岛种臣使用奸计骗得了出兵台湾的口实。他还雇船雇员协助日本出兵"征台",所以,日本此次侵台,从策划到实施,李仙得都积极参与,起了很大的作用。
