Lhoza Bids Farewell to Poverty

Lhoza, on the Sino-Bhutan border covering an area of 4,466 square km and with an average elevation of 3,825 meters, used to be one of the poorest counties in Tibet. Not long ago, my colleagues and I visited Lhoza County in Shannan Prefecture. We were astonished to see the streets were flanked by restaurants, Internet bars, Karaoke halls, Langma halls and food markets. We stayed there for a week and interviewed County Magistrate Norgyi, a medium-sized man quick in mind.

今年五月,电影<刮痧>在五道口举行观众见面会.电影放映完毕,中外演职人员集体上台,星光熠熠,台下轰轰.让人意外的是,明星们个个谦虚得离谱,口口声声说去了那么多地方,就来五道口才感到诚惶诚恐,台下每一位都比我们知识渊博什么的.还真有个学者模样的主儿兴冲冲地跑到台前,张口就提了一连串高深莫测的问题.五道口就是这样,挺有学问也挺媚俗的.

Oslo's Farewell to Urban Sprawl

Sustainable mobility has been an important concern in urban planning and development in Oslo Metropolitan Area since the 1990s. The period has been characterized by concentrated and compact urban development, especially within the municipality of Oslo. This has contributed to a reduction in growth in car traffic. Analyses of selected land use and transport plans and policy documents, professional journal articles and interviews with key actors show that there has been a high degree of consensus about this spatial development strategy. Considerable investments have been made in public transport as well as in road development; the former based on broad consensus. Road capacity increases have been contested among professionals but widely supported by politicians.

A Farewell to Alms: A Brief Economic History of the World

Abstract

The reasons for the lack of communication between economists and econophysicists are clarified by giving an outline of the methodological differences between economics and econophysics, which has emerged as a new field of research over the last decade. Theorists working in econophysics see economic and financial phenomena through the ‘lens’ of statistical physics. So far, there has been no real dialogue between economists and econophysicists because both communities adhere to their own methodological precepts.

西方人类、考古以及语言请学科fieldwork的概念,从20世纪80年代初开始进入我国民俗学界,至今译法尚未统一,大致可分为田野作业、田野工作、田野调查、田野考察、野外考察、实地考察等几种译法。此后,田野作业被民俗学界当作最重要的一种研究方法,反复提倡,许多学者甚至把民俗学学科水平相对低下的原因也归结为田野作业数量和质量的不足。种种言说,把田野作业的重要性提高到了一个无上的高度。     

DAOFU:A GO-GO COUNTY

When my car sped along the Highway No.317, which is part of the Sichuan-Tibet road, I was entranced to find I was in a fairyland. Assessing Poverty and Poverty Alleviation: Evidence from West Bengal

Recent interest in poverty and poverty relief has included debates that have moved beyond narrow concerns of consumption and income generation. Sen's research on entitlements and capabilities revolutionized approaches to poverty in the 1980s, and his work has itself been open to critical appraisals that have stressed empowerment and vulnerability as issues of equal importance. Some of these theoretical debates are briefly reviewed here, after which the frameworks for analysis that they suggest are applied to the study of rural poverty in West Bengal. The two tasks that the paper then sets itself are to illustrate the empirical value of broader conceptualizations of poverty, and to highlight the methodological difficulties that they raise.     

Responding to Farm Poverty in Australia

In May 2005, the Commonwealth announced changes to the eligibility criteria for a number of farm welfare payments which have resulted in farmers receiving such payments on more generous terms than other disadvantaged groups in the community. The changes passed largely unremarked by the media or political commentators. Farm welfare programs are developed independently of the general welfare safety net and are based on assumptions about the nature, extent and causes of farm poverty. No comprehensive empirical research has been conducted into farm poverty since the Henderson Inquiry of the 1970 Henderson, R. F., Harcourt, A. and Harper, R. J.A. 1970. This paper discusses the issue of farm poverty in Australia and how it fits into the broader welfare debate, and proposes a way forward to develop more effective and equitable farm welfare programs.
